By the way, I noticed fewer people go camping with a tent these days. Mostly caravans or campers, but only the youth (hippies often) go with a tent. Especially if you do not go in the peak season, 95% of the occupation on a campsite is by caravans.

A6 Kaiserslautern - Saarbrücken / French border

Click on the title to view the whole set.

The A6 is basically the only major freeway border crossing between Germany and France. There is a second one near Mulhouse, but that's not a major entrance point of Germany. This set begins where the previous one left off, at the city of Kaiserslautern, all the way to the French border. The pics were taken in two days, since I spend the night on a campsite a few kilometers before Saarbrücken. I fueled up at the Autohof Ramstein, lots of Americans around there, big SUV's and sports cars and military type guys.

route:

A320 Forbach

This is the A320, the former A32 which runs from the German border via the mining town of Forbach to the Autoroute A4 near Saint Avold. It's toll free and has a rather high exit density.

Renault Kangoo. Two different fuel consumption because not all routes are equal in fuel efficiency

So which fuel efficiency for which part? 17 till the French border and 19 from France onwards?

And great pics!

A4 St. Avold - Metz

Click on the title to view the whole set

The A4 is the principal east-west motorway in France. It connects Paris with Strasbourg, and this set covers the part from Saint Avold (A320) to Metz (A31), a distance of about 55 kilometers. The landscape wasn't as boring as I expected. The tolling system is an "open" system with a single barrier on the mainline lanes plus some minor tolls at the exits.

route:

1. Entering A4.
image hosted on flickr

2. Next exit: 6km.
image hosted on flickr

3. Metz is not really far now. Paris is still like 3.5 hours of driving.
image hosted on flickr

4. Forests and rolling hills. Nice!
image hosted on flickr

5. Some war cemetaries. (First WW?)
image hosted on flickr

6. Exit to Saint Avold. This is an interregional exit.
image hosted on flickr

7. Metz-Nancy. It's very common in France to name these cities in one phrase.
image hosted on flickr

8. The weather was great here.
image hosted on flickr

9. Toll plaza. There was no waiting line here. The student at the toll booth was insanely hot
image hosted on flickr

10. Nancy 108 kilometers. Probably the fastest following the south side of Metz.

11. Rest area.

12. Shell gas station.

13. Crawlers lanes
image hosted on flickr

14. Closed rest area without facilities.
image hosted on flickr

15. The landscape opens up.
image hosted on flickr

16. A314 is merely a short connector into Metz.
image hosted on flickr

17. Thionville and Luxembourg distances added.
image hosted on flickr

18. Another rest area.
image hosted on flickr

19. Three uphill lanes.
image hosted on flickr

20. Metz city ahead.
image hosted on flickr

21. Metz is part of an industrialized valley of the Moselle river.
image hosted on flickr

22. Left exit to A314.
image hosted on flickr

23. A4 is only one lane here, for a short segment.
image hosted on flickr

24. Downhill now.
image hosted on flickr

25. Rolling hills.
image hosted on flickr

26. Another rest area. No shortage of them along the A4 considering the low traffic volumes.
image hosted on flickr

27. Ennery exit ahead.
image hosted on flickr

28. Local exit, no big deal.
image hosted on flickr

29. Interchange Hauconcourt. Highly unusual that French interchanges are named like this.

30. I'm heading north here towards Luxembourg.

Video: A31 Thionville

This is a very wellknown part of Autoroute for many Dutchmen and Belgians, since it's one of the primary roads to the south. Especially the cathedral on the shoulder is a landmark to many.

A31 Metz - Luxembourg

This set travels from the city of Metz to the border with Luxembourg, north of Thionville.

route:

1. Busy traffic on the A31, this part is toll free and travels through an urbanized region.
image hosted on flickr

2. Six lanes here.
image hosted on flickr

3. Luxembourg is only 47 km. Maybe they should sign something further away, like Liège or Bruxelles.
image hosted on flickr

4. Another local exit.
image hosted on flickr

5. Exit Mondelange ahead. Nearly all places in this area end at "-ange".
image hosted on flickr

6. The exit.
image hosted on flickr

7. This is a mining region. Lots of mining towns.
image hosted on flickr

8. This VMS says all traffic above 7.5 tonnes cannot enter Germany on 10, 12 and 13th of April.
image hosted on flickr

9. Interchange with the A30, Six lanes split here onto two left lanes to Longwy and two right lanes to Luxembourg.
image hosted on flickr

10. Thionville sign
image hosted on flickr

11. Interregional exit, to Trier. I would go through Luxembourg to get to Trier though.
image hosted on flickr

12. Yutz. Nice town name
image hosted on flickr

13. Thionville-Centre exit.
image hosted on flickr

14. Another Thionville exit.
image hosted on flickr

15. View on the city.
image hosted on flickr

16. Notice this cathedral almost on the shoulder here.
image hosted on flickr

17. Another Thionville exit.
image hosted on flickr

18. Speed limit is only 90 through here.
image hosted on flickr

19. Terville exit.
image hosted on flickr

20. Hayange exit.
image hosted on flickr

21. Again, notice the town names ending with "-ange".
image hosted on flickr

22. Last Thionville exit.
image hosted on flickr

23. Also to Longwy, a city to the west.
image hosted on flickr

24. Next exit is 7 kms.
image hosted on flickr

25. Rest area.
image hosted on flickr

26. Volmerange exit.
image hosted on flickr

27. 19km to Luxembourg.
image hosted on flickr

28. Europe
image hosted on flickr

29. The border with Luxembourg is at the top of the hill.

Thionville falls under the Diocese of Metz. It's a normal church or chapel.

the -ange townnames derive from the german -ingen, which is similiar to the english -ing, meaning people of.

Btw: Why is there a german distance sign behind the french border?

Yes, it's past the "France" sign, but I think the actual border, or road authority change is a couple of hundred meters further.
