Intersection for Kumanovo:

Now we meet the motorway. We will go towards Skopje:

Unfortunately from now on I was the driver so I have no more shots till a few kilometres from Ohrid. I used the road Kumanovo-Aracinovo-Skopje bypass-Tetovo-Gostivar-Kicevo-Ohrid. I preffered from Kumanovo to Skopje to use a shorter provincial road through Aracinovo instead of the motorway, till Skopje. From Skopje to Tetovo, the motorway seemed a standard one, but from Tetovo till Gostivar it has no emergency lanes and speed limit is 80 or 100. We payed from Skopje to Gostivar 100 denars toll, which makes it about 1.6 euros.

Are there road assistance services (like ADAC, RACE, ANWB, etc) in Macedonia and Albania?

I spend 2 nights in the beautiful city of Ohrid.
Ohrid is a city on the eastern shore of Lake Ohrid in the Republic of Macedonia. It has about 42,000 inhabitants, making it the seventh largest city in the country. The city is the seat of Ohrid Municipality. Ohrid is notable for having once 365 churches, one for each day of the year and has been referred to as a "Jerusalem".The city is rich in picturesque houses and monuments, and tourism is predominant. It is located southwest of Skopje, west of Resen and Bitola, and east of Elbasan and Tirana in Albania.

In 1980, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were accepted as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The city lies at an altitude of about 700m.

The next day (on 27th), we made a trip to Sveti Naum monastery. The road is near the lake for most of the time and passes through some holiday villages.

For the first kms the road is 2+2:

The road narrows to 1+1 and we have a nice small tunnel ahead:

Continuing on the 1+1 road:

Sveti Naum is an old Eastern Orthodox monastery in the Republic of Macedonia, named after the medieval Saint Naum. It is situated along Lake Ohrid, 29 km south of the city of Ohrid. The monastery gets its name from the saint who founded it. The monastery was established in the year 905 by St Naum of Ohrid himself. St Naum is also buried in the church. Due to the beautiful setting, the monastery is among the most popular destinations in the Republic of Macedonia. There is a hotel, and several restaurants operating in warmer days, from early spring until late autumn.

Thanks! It took me about 2 and a half hours from Skopje to Ohrid. From Skopje till Tetovo there is a normal motorway, then to Gostivar a motorway without shoulders(feels quite claustrophobic) and then a normal road till Ohrid. Even if you have to climb 2 mountain passes (at around 1200m), you have almost always 2 lanes for going up, the incline is not steep and road is pretty straight.

Ohrid is a very nice city, it really deserves a visit, and its area is very pictuoresque from natural and cultural point of view.

All roads are interesting, and you know that!! (If you didn't, then you'd be some sort of pain in the lower back-NIMBY)

Yes, all roads are interesting, this was very interesting as Macedonia isn't exactly the most photographed country in the world.

Ok, I just wondered, because I often go to Ohrid and Bitola in the summer. Maybe I`ll try the road between Skopje and Ohrid next summer.

The road from Bitola to Ohrid is somewhat similar with the one from Gostivar to Ohrid.

Returning from Sveti Naum to Ohrid I also tried to go up to Galicica mountain, but there was snow just 500 from the peak. Anyway the view from this road is one of the most impressive I ever saw:

On 28th of Deecember, I left Ohrid for Greece. I used the road-Ohrid-Bitola-Florina-near Kastoria-Neapoli-Tsotili-Pendalofos-Konitsa.
First pictures from macedonian M5 Ohrid-Bitola. The road is a nice mountain road, passing 2 ridges at about 1200m a.s.l.Condition of the road is mostly good, many inclined parts having 2 lanes for uphill direction:

Leaving Ohrid on M5:

Entering Leskoec, a suburb of Ohrid:

Exiting Leskoec:

Going further to Resen and Bitola:

Intersection:

After that intersection we turn right and really enter the mountains:

Some really nice straight sections in the mountains. Yugoslavia had real good road engineers:

And some tunnels too:

We climb further, to the first mountain pass:

And now we start the downhill to Resen:

Crashbarriers,I thought they might be of particular interest for some forumers:

We get closer to Resen:

Inside the town of Resen:

we can discuss about that I guess the roads were good when they were build, but they weren't well maintained.
