The roads are not so bad in this region, I was expecting worse roads taking into account the mountainous terrain through which they pass. The settlements are also small and there is a big distance between them. However, they put sand on the roads even if it didn't snow, just for preventing to be taken by surprise.

The main road to Pamporovo, the one through Asenovgrad, is way better, and so is the road to the greek border at Zlatograd.

We leave Dospat behind:

The road climbs quite high, winding its way through the mountains at altitudes between 1400m and 1700m, in a mostly forested area:

In Batak obstina:

The weather was good all day, very sunny:

Wow, beautiful forests! Keep them coming.

PS: the Australian Bruce Highway is severely flooded in places.

So we continue driving on Trakya...

That's the point where the ones going to Istanbul leave the motorway:

Traffic is much smaller after that exit:

A small section without median. Probably prepared to be used by planes in a state of war? The motorway ends at the the start of this section and starts again after. There is a speed limit here of 90, and police was present.

Orizovo exit:

Stara Zagora is a lot closer now. The pavement is also a lot better, this section being opened just few years ago:
