SLOVAKIA ... Wild heart of Europe

Down to Kvačianska valley and up to Prosiecka valley circle.

Waters, flowing from the higher situated Orava region into the lower situated Liptov region, are cutting through the limestone massif of Choč mountains that divide both regions and creating two dramatic limestone canyons - Kvačianska and Prosiecka valley.

Let's have a look ...

Our starting point will be place called Oblazy - at this point where three smaller gorges meet you can find reconstructed and still working wooden mill and saw. Behind this lovely and romantic place the great canyon of Kvačianka river starts ...

From Oblazy we take old briddleway high above the canyon and down to Kvačany village as bottom of the canyon in unaccessible for walkers. From the path we can enjoy some vertigo views on Kvačianka river ...

Then we traverse beneath the slopes of Choč mountains above Kvačany and Prosiek village towards Prosiecka valley, passing stunning Liptov countryside with Low Tatras mountains on the background ...

Entering the lower part of Prosiecka valley via magnificient limestone gorge called Vráta (The Gate) with crystal clear waters ...

Where all that water disappeared? ... The middle part of the valley is dry and strangely quiet ...

The side gorge called Červené piesky (The Red Sands) has water again, so we can find there even 15m high waterfall ...

The upper part of Prosicka valley is the most dramatic one called Sokol (The Falcon) usually dry as well - it is very steep and narrow rocky gap where trekkers need to climb over three iron ladders ...

We are now on the karst plateau called Svorad above the valley with the highest peak of Choč mountain in distance, Veľký Choč [1611m] - welcome to Orava region!

Approaching the village called Veľké Borové ...

From the village we need to follow the flow of small stream which is starting to cut its own way throuch the limestones of Choč mountains, creating one of the side gorges of Kvačianska valley and will lead us back to Oblazy ...

So finally we are back on Oblazy and we can enjoy quiet and peaceful evening atmosphere of this place ...

SLOVAKIA ... Wild heart of Europe

LIPTOV ... one of the top tourist regions in Slovakia, enclosed with high mountains such as Western Tatras (2248m), Low Tatras (2043m) and Choč mountains (1611m) is a fresh rolling countryside covered with romantic villages and lush green pastures ...

SLOVAKIA ... Wild heart of Europe

WESTERN TATRAS - these mountains are natural continuation of High Tatras massif and they are generally gently modelated and lower than High Tatras. The highest peak Bystrá (2248m) is created from granite like the most of the massif, only Sivý vrch peak (1805m) looks like a white cap as geologically it is belonging to the limestone massif of Choč mountains. Deep virgin mountain woods are inhabited by bears, wolfes and lynxes.

Sivý vrch (1805m)

Western Tatras from the top of Sivý vrch peak ...

Orava region and Zuberec village from the top of Sivý vrch peak ...

Radové skaly - this sparkling white limestone ridge is connecting Sivý vrch (and Western Tatras) to Choč mountains. This is really rough trek through the bizzare rock formations ...

SLOVAKIA ... Wild heart of Europe

WESTERN TATRAS - Roháče (mountain group)

Roháče are considered as the most beautiful part of Western Tatras mountains as its craggy relief recalls the wilderness of High Tatras. The heart of Roháče is Roháčska valley with deep woods, mountain lakes and waterfalls surrounded by majestic peaks. The trek through the Roháče mountain ridge is hard but very popular one in Slovakia and it is secured by iron chains in some parts. Baníkov peak (2178m) is the highest one within this mountain group.

The entrance to Roháče ...

River that drains Roháčska valley out ...

Ťatliak lake with Ostrý roháč (2088m) and Plačlivé (2125m) peaks on the background ...

Beneath the peaks of Roháče ...

Four Roháčske tarns (mountain lakes) - the first one

Four Roháčske tarns (mountain lakes) - the second one

Four Roháčske tarns (mountain lakes) - the third one

Four Roháčske tarns (mountain lakes) - the fourth one (the largest and the highest one)

Above Roháčska valley ...

A little tarn, in folk tradition it is known as the mountain eye ...

Hrubá kopa (2166m), Tri kopy (2136m) and Baníkov (2178m) peaks - the most difficult spots when the mountain ridge is traversed ...

Waterfall in one of the side valleys ...

Good bye Roháče ... see you next year

SLOVAKIA ... Wild heart of Europe

Let's take a trip to the highiest peak of Slovakia and whole Carpathian range, let's climb up Gerlach peak (2655m) in High Tatras mountains ...

If you are not an organized mountain climber, you have to take an official mountain guide for that trip - 3 people are permitted per 1 guide. You will pay 80 Euros per person, but believe me they will be the best spent money in your life

The usual starting point is moutain hotel Sliezsky dom (1670m) in Velická valley where you will meet your mountain guide early morning. The classic route is climbing up via Velická próba (gully) and descend via Batizovská próba (gully) finishing at the shores of Batizovské tarn (1884m) in Batizovská valley (where you can reach Sliezsky dom again and complete the circle).

6:00AM ... steep walk to the foot of Velická próba

Preparation under the Velická próba ... get ready your helmet and bind yourself to the rope!

The climbing is starting up ....

Our mountain guide Ervin - our lifes depend on him

High above the bottom of Velická valley ...

At the top of the narrow mountain pass called Sedielko nad Kotlom (2425m)

Traversing the mountain ridge of Kotlový peak (2601m)

The first look on our destination, Gerlach peak (2655m) - in top right corner

Views from the top of Gerlach peak ... the western part of High Tatras

Views from the top of Gerlach peak ... the eastern part of High Tatras

Fun ends ... we have to take the most difficult part of this trip, the long vertigo descend via Batizovská próba to the calm waters of Batizovské tarn (at the background)

Looking back on the ferrata of Batizovská próba from the bottom of Batizovská valley ...

Batizovská valley ... the wild beauty

The massif of Končistá peak (2538m) from Batizovská valley ...

At the stone shore of Batizovské tarn (1884m)
