ROME | Projects & Construction

I decided to create a projects and construction thread for Roma because there are two projects coming up at the Espozioni Universale di Roma (Casa di Vetro and the New Congress Centre). Two 100+-metre skyscrapers are also planned for Rome. I don't know any other proposals. Rome is kinda low on development projects.

Europarco - Eurosky

LA TORRE EUROSKY

Progetto EUROPARCO nell'area Eur Castellaccio

All development in Rome has to be focused around the EUR area.

In other news, the Olympic Velodrome was imploded in July of 2008 to be replaced by a multifunctional sports and wellness centre which apparently is based on the design of the velodrome. The design of the new building going up on the site of the velodrome is a bad idea. The velodrome should have been replaced with a residential development.

Because there does not appear to be any developments in Rome outside the EUR (other than that proposed sports complex with a Calatrava-designed indoor arena). I wanted to post about other Rome developments in the Italian Forum, but all discussion has to be in Italian and I don't speak Italian.

Feel free to do it anyway Jim, I'm sure every contribution will be appreciated. Even if I'm Italian I don't post much in the Rome thread myself as I live near Venice, some 600 Km afar.

@Ingenioren

Being Rome probably the most historically significant city in the western hemisphere, large-scale projects have been often concentrated outside of the ancient city walls, especially after WWII.

The last significant interventions in the historic centre were made under the fascist regime, like via della Conciliazione and via dei Fori Imperiali, together with some minor office and government buildings built in a style as far as possible respectful of the context.
Begun during the fascist era was also the E42 neighbourhood, which was intended to host the planned 1942 world exposition. The E42 (now called EUR), that in Mussolini's intention had to become the third Rome (after the ancient roman and the christian one), is a small masterpiece of the late '30s regime architecture, although it was never completed.

Today EUR is scattered with anonymous post-war midrises, most of them public-owned, and some are currently being replaced by more ambitious projects like the Nuvola congress centre (posted above) or the Piano apartments.

There are many other projects undergoing construction in the Rome outskirts, mainly residential/commercial areas, but the grandeur of ancien roman and baroque architecture is a strong burden on hold of innovation.

they're doing two arenas. a Swimming Pool arena and a Basketball/volleyball Arena.
The project involved other things. A tower for the rectorate of the university, othe buildings, a great area which should remind us to the Circo Massimo...
but up to now they're building only the arenas and then they'll start with the Tower...

Another proposal for Rome is a new 60,000 capacity retractable-roofed rectangular stadium named Stadio Delle Aquille. It may be going through several hurdles to receive final approval.

How many 100+-metre towers is Rome going to build or propose? Is rome trying to renew its skyline in any way?
