Egyptian Military and Armed Forces (Photos and Discussion)

THE EGYPTIAN ARMED FORCES AND MILITARY

Quote:
The Armed Forces of Egypt are the largest on the African continent and one of the largest in the world (ranked 11th), consisting of the Egyptian Army, Egyptian Navy, Egyptian Air Force and Egyptian Air Defense Command.

The Commander-in-Chief is Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi and the General Chief of Staff is Lt. Gen. Sami Hafez Anan.

The armed forces inventory includes equipment from the United States, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, the former Soviet Union, and the People's Republic of China. Equipment from the former Soviet Union is being progressively replaced by more modern American, French, and British equipment, a significant portion of which is built under license in Egypt, such as the M1 Abrams tank.

To bolster stability and moderation in the region, Egypt has provided military assistance and training to a number of African and Arab states. Although not a NATO member, Egypt remains a strong military and strategic partner and is a participant in NATO's Mediterranean Dialogue forum. The Egyptian military is one of the strongest in the region, and gives Egypt regional military supremacy rivaled only by Israel , besides being the strongest in Africa . Egypt is the only Arab country with a spy satellite and has launched another one in 2007

I have a question.

As I understand, Egypt is a strong ally of the USA in the Middle East. At the same time, Israel is obviously a strong ally of the USA in the Middle East.

Now, Egypt and Israel have signed a cease fire, but this agreement is not a long term solution, and I do not see the point of a powerful Egyptian military, if the 'Israeli threat' wasn't there. So essentially, the Egyptian military exists to deal with the situation should Israel declare war.

I do not see any other point of having a strong military. Sudan and Libya are in no position to threaten Egypt, and while there is always a threat from terrorists, they cannot be confronted with a converntional military.

So my question is, why does the USA support both Egypt and Israel, while the two counties are at a ceasefire, but are not in long term peace?

Okay first of all the threat of israel is ever lasting, war can literally break out any second now, the peace between israel and Egypt is a very very cold one, and if there wasn't US pressure, Egypt wouldnt really give a crap about Israel.

As for your question, why does the US support both Israel and Egypt, its because both sides are crucial to america's welfare. Do you really think the US really supports the Arab peace plan? Hell no! They claim they are "pushing for democracy" in Egypt, however that would be their biggest nightmare. To the US they want the Mubarak regime, if the Muslim Brotherhood came into power, the whole of the Middle East's stability and the US is at risk, and they are afraid egypt might became a another pakistan, except that even the government wont co-operate with the US. And they want Israel because in the event of an all-out Middle East war, then at least someone will be on thier side.

You must realise 2 things:
1/ you shouldn't access information about egypt from bbc news
2/ egypt is effectively a military dictatorship and has been since the british colonisers left - what the 'government' says is often a million miles away from reality. The truth is that it wouldn't be surprising if Israel attacked egypt as soon as a Mubarak-style regime is replaced by a democratic one.

OMG

Look at these videos, they show the Egyptian Special Forces, they are known as teh Thunderbolt Squad, and they are Egypt's Equivelant to the US Navy Seals.

Just look at these guys!! Look at their training!!! They have their hands and feet tied, and they have to rescue themselves in a pool!!! Their training takes more than two years, and part of it involves taking place in combat exercises during 6 days of no sleep!!

These guys are crazy, theyre made of steel, the videos are so long, but trust me its totally worth every second!!

this ones in english, but the other videos are better:
