Adelaide, Australia - Colonel William Light, one of Adelaide's founding fathers, designed the city and chose its location close to the River Torrens in the area originally inhabited by the Kaurna people. Light's design set out Adelaide in a grid layout, interspaced by wide boulevards and large public squares, and entirely surrounded by parkland.

Adelaide is fascinating! - I'd echo earlier comments by saying that a second green ring should have been established further out to limit sprawl and encourage more high density urbanity.

Here's a very very dry graphic showing 'greenbelts' where development is limited, around UK cities:

Frankfurt has the GrünGürtel ("green belt") surrounding the city, it is protected by law since 1991:

And the city center is also surrounded by a park:

frankfurt comes to my mind. there is a ring of parkland around the city center. since the creation of the ring, however, the city center has expanded beyond the borders.

the picture above shows the layout of the parks around the city center and the location of the city walls during different time periods in the past (they don't exist today anymore).

Birmingham UK gets quite a bit of flack for being a concrete city within the country itself and Europe. However ... Birmingham is situated on a sandstone ridge and has huge amounts of greenary.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Portland, Oregon. Their greenbelt is a famous in urban-planning (and much criticized for making the city extremely expensive to live in).

Cape Town, South Africa: where I'm going to study abroad for a semester. The center of Cape Town is surrounded by mountains, creating the "city bowl"

If there is one notable city that is surrounded by green spaces, it would be

Atlanta, Georgia
