Granville Mall Redesign | Downtown Vancouver | U/C

I know that we had a thread on this, but I'll start another.

Guys, post your pics of the construction and let's talk. Basalt strips, Beech trees, parking issues, etc.

This is the link with the city site.

I was planning to take some pics for this thread today, but when I get to downtown I totally forgot about it.

South of Nelson Street, traffic patterns would remain unchanged. Sidewalks would be widened by the width of the existing parking lane to provide a sidewalk that can be used to accommodate parked vehicles between street trees.
Seems to defeat the purpose of a sidewalk to have cars parked on it, blocking the way, but I guess the trees are already in the way for pedestrians.

Do those dark gray basalt strips on the new sidewalk outline the parking zones, or are they entirely decorative?

This shows how the parking would be utilized between the trees and only during the day. (two drawings at at bottom right)

I don't think they should replant trees... but I guess that wouldn't fly since this is VANCOUVER were talkin' about, not Toronto.

What's bad about replanting trees?

The definition of a mall (not shopping mall) is a street mainly for foot traffic or pedestrian use. Part of Granville street serves that purpose, hence Granville mall.

^Because Robson is not closed to vehicular traffic. Granville Street (or at least part of it) is closed off to vehicles, aside from public transit. Have you heard of a "pedestrian mall" before? Granville isn't a true pedestrian mall since buses run on it so you can't just walk down the middle of the street but it is still referred to as a mall. Vancouver doesn't really have any true pedestrian malls so it is understandable that you're not so familiar with the term.

This link may help to clarify things for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedestrian_street

they always called that small stretch the "granville mall" up until the mid 90's most people called robson street "robson strasse" as it was the german part of the city and before all the fashion type places moved in like the gap, guess etc it was mostly smaller stores and cafes than wham the 90's hit and it changed

I have an old map (from 1989) somewhere that shows it as "robson strasse" i wonder if i can find it

That is very cool. Did not know that. Here is a snipet confirming your memory.

Quote:
Robson Street: Named after John Robson who was the Premier of BC from 1889-1892. It began its commercial history early on with retail shops and restaurants springing up in 1985.

It also became known as Robsonstrasse which was “a reflection of the European shopkeepers who operated the many small delicatessens, patisseries, and chic boutiques that populated the street.”
