Rio de Janeiro holds two huge urban forests:

The Parque Estadual da Pedra Branca is considered to be the largest forest in urban area in the world. It has 12.500 hectares.

And the "Floresta da Tijuca", which is considered to be the third largest forest in urban area in the world, with 3.972 hectares of preserved area. This forest is not natural. It had been destroyed to make way for Coffee farms, but in an effort to preserve Rio's water supply, in the 19th century, the forest had been rebuilt, to preserve the rivers sources.

Many nature reserves close to the city. Even suburbs feel like they're in the bush sometimes here.

Where's the city? It looks like one building on top of a hill. I guess that makes any rural area a green city?

The European green capital award 2012 of the European Comision goes to Vitoria- Gasteiz, Spain.

More than 40 m2 for each inhabitant in green zones, 20 m2 of green zones in the city center and 20 m2 more in the green belt, inspired in the old green belt of London.

The Maiorhall decrease in a 20 % the waste in water.
More bicycles and more public transport.
