Doing a dummy booking on their website, it looks like double.

關鍵雲南團友 獲賠全數團費
2012年02月03日

High-level translation : 24 members of a Hong Kong tour group could not board their Hong Kong Express flight from Yunnan to Hong Kong because the flight was overbooked. The tour group left Hong Kong on 28 January for a 6-day tour.

The tour group had to take a domestic flight to Shenzhen, where they were transported back to Hong Kong. The entire tour fee of $4200 was refunded.

That's very nice, when everybody else is opening LCC routes it just shows how much money in the greater China region airlines can rip off.

Standoff on jet after it lands 17 hours late
The Standard
Friday, February 24, 2012

Angry mainland passengers refused to disembark from a Hong Kong Airlines jet for hours at Chek Lap Kok yesterday following a nearly 17-hour delay.

It was the third such incident in 12 months to hit the budget airline, forcing it to provide cash compensation to passengers.

Flight HX235 was due to arrive at 10.35am on Wednesday but heavy fog prevented the jet from taking off from Shanghai Pudong International Airport for hours, said an airline spokeswoman.

It finally arrived at 4.54 am yesterday.

Some of the passengers were earlier offered compensation in Shanghai.

Upon landing, around 17 irate passengers stayed back to press their demands for reimbursements for hotel and administrative fees in a standoff that lasted four hours.

It is not known if they are among those offered compensation earlier.

The Airport Authority brought in the police once notified of the situation.

The standoff ended with the spokeswoman saying that all passengers received compensation.

But she refused to go into compensation details.

In November, 21 passengers were involved in a similar standoff that lasted five hours upon arrival following a nine- hour delay in Singapore.

They left the aircraft only after the airline agreed to triple their compensation to HK$1,200.

Last February, a group of 70 mainland tourists staged an all-night protest at the airport over a delay after refusing to board a Hong Kong Airlines flight.

Many of them demanded to be paid HK$800 instead of the promised HK$100 compensation.

According to the authority, the Shanghai fog resulted in 12 flights being canceled on Wednesday as well as delays for 17 inbound flights from Shanghai and 10 outbound flights.

Tourism sector legislator Paul Tse Wai-chun called for aviation guidelines that will set in stone what circumstances demand monetary compensation.

An authority spokesman said reimbursements for delays are a contractual matter that should be resolved through negotiations between airlines and passengers.

Tsk tsk. Better to remain silent and appear a fool, than speak and remove all doubt...

So anyway. These newly outfitted A330's are doing the longhaul HKG-LON route. Direct.

I checked the HX website and "Club Classic" is basically a recliner longhaul business class seat with 50-ish inch seat pitch where a return fare is ~HK$20k (~US$2500). "Club Premier" in terms of product is between longhaul first & business on most other airlines (that don't have suites). That's going for ~HK$40k (~US$5000). All taxes included.

Now consider that Cathay Pacific (CX) offer for HKG-LHR an economy return for ~HK$12k (~US$1500), the shiny new premium economy for ~HK$18k (~US$2250), business for ~HK$41k (~US$5150) and first for ~HK$72k (~US$9200) taxes included... it's quite clear HX are undercutting CX by quite a fair bit at least as far as hard product is concerned.

I personally much prefer LGW (London Gatwick) over LHR (London Heathrow, aka Hellhole) whenever I get the choice when flying back to the UK.

As for service on board HX flights... well, I guess we'll find out in a month or so. I certainly hope they'll do well, if only to put some pressure on CX.

Also it'll be interesting quite how HX will use the massive Airbus A380's when they get them in a few years time (~2015?).

Hong Kong Airlines criticised over dolphin cargo
AFP
Feb 26, 2012

Hong Kong Airlines was under pressure to stop its live dolphin cargo business after an internal memo describing a recent delivery from Japan to Vietnam was leaked to Chinese media.

More than 2,800 people have signed an online petition at change.org calling for an end to the flights, citing a China Daily newspaper report about a January 16 delivery of five dolphins from Osaka to Hanoi.

The dolphins are believed to have come from the Japanese town of Taiji, the scene of an annual dolphin slaughter depicted in Oscar Award winning documentary "The Cove", Sunday's report said.

"Five Taiji dolphins were transported via cargo flight in 'flying coffins' on January 16, 2012. They spent at least seven hours in this cruel confinement," the petition reads.

"Dolphins are neither cargo, nor commerce, nor entertainment."

An internal memo to airline staff made no mention of the animal welfare considerations but described the flight as a success that earned HK$850,000 ($110,000) in cargo revenue.

"The smooth handling of such special cargo which is time sensitive and vulnerable demonstrates that Hong Kong Airlines cargo handling capability has further improved," says the memo cited by the China Daily.

"Based on the experience we have obtained this time, Hong Kong Airlines cargo will develop the business onwards."

It included a photograph of the dolphins lying in shallow, narrow containers inside the belly of a Boeing 733F cargo plane.

Hong Kong Airlines representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment, however a spokesman told the South China Morning Post website that the company was "committed to the protection of animal welfare".

Hong Kong Airlines may cancel A380 order: report
AFP
Thu, Mar 1, 2012

Hong Kong Airlines may cancel an order for 10 Airbus superjumbo A380 jets, a report said Thursday, as Chinese opposition to the European Union's airlines carbon emissions fee intensifies.

Beijing has banned its airlines from complying with the EU scheme, which was imposed from January 1 although no airline will face a bill until 2013.

Hong Kong Airlines, a subsidiary of Chinese carrier Hainan Airlines, said it was under pressure to cancel the acquisition -- reportedly worth about $3.8 billion at list prices -- following China's decision.

"We cannot do something which is against our country's interest," Hong Kong Airlines president Yang Jianhong told the South China Morning Post newspaper in Hong Kong.

The airline might review its fleet expansion plan if the order is dropped, the newspaper quoted a source from the firm as saying. The 10 jets were intended to serve its European and North American markets.

Hong Kong Airlines could not be immediately reached for comment. A Singapore-based spokesman for Airbus told AFP "there is no change to the status of the order" at the moment.

The European aircraft manufacturer has reportedly said it plans to deliver the first A380 to Hong Kong Airlines in 2015.

China was among more than two dozen countries including India, Russia and the United States that opposed the EU scheme, which is imposed on airlines taking off or landing in Europe.

The EU has said the carbon tax will help the 27-nation EU bloc achieve its goal of cutting emissions by 20 percent by 2020 and that it will not back down, despite claims the charge violates international law.

China has said it fears its aviation sector will have to pay an additional 800 million yuan ($125 million) a year on flights originating from or landing in Europe, and that the cost could be almost four times higher by 2020.
