Cairns direct flights set for 2017 takeoff
14 January 2016
Cairns Post Excerpt

HONG KONG Airlines are aiming for non-stop flights between Cairns and Hong Kong as early as next year.As the airline was officially welcomed to Cairns Airport yesterday, the company’s assistant commercial director Michael Burke told The Cairns Post that the plan was for direct flights – instead of via the Gold Coast – from next year.

Last Saturday the airline started operating the first of 34 charter flights to Cairns via Coolangatta on a three month trial over the Chinese New Year, bringing up to 10,000 passengers.

But Mr Burke – who was joined by airline commercial director Li Dianchun – said it was apparent that the flights would become year-round services later this year followed by non-stop flights next year.

“We are close we think to a sustained schedule. We are in final negotiations. It’s very complicated as it involves many parties,” Mr Burke said.

He said the aim was for three flights a week via the Gold Coast all year, reducing to two a week in the low season.

“We are looking at four to five flights a week during next year’s Chinese New Year,” Mr Burke said. “We are very confident. The flights into the Gold Coast and Cairns in the Chinese New Year over the next three months are very strong ... more than 90 per cent load factors which we are extremely happy about.” He said the number of passengers arriving on the Cairns flights were low at the moment because they were staying on the Gold Coast first for a few days before catching the airline’s service to Cairns to spend time in the Far North before returning home.

Flights offer 300-job boost
4 February 2016
Cairns Post Excerpt

THE move by Hong Kong Airlines to operate year-round flights to Cairns is expected to boost the city’s economy by more than $44 million a year and create nearly 300 jobs.

The airline is extending its three-month trial to a permanent scheduled service via the Gold Coast twice-weekly from April, increasing to three times a week from July.

Cairns Airport aeronautical general manager Janice Antonson said the three times a week service was expected to generate about $44.2 million per year for the economy and create 286 jobs.

“We will be working with Tourism Tropical North Queensland, Hong Kong Airlines and all the partners involved to help promote this service and boost visitor numbers to Cairns and Great Barrier Reef,” Ms Antonson said.

“We look forward to seeing the economic benefits of the year-round service flow right across the region.” Airline chief commercial officer Li Dianchun said the carrier was “honoured to have the full support of Tourism and Events Queensland” in extending the flight service from Hong Kong to the Gold Coast and Cairns.

“Queensland is undoubtedly a wonderful destination for travellers and overwhelming response have been received since its launch in January,” he said.

“We firmly believe the year-round service will further enhance the cultural, tourism and business exchange between China, Asia and Australia via our strong international hub, Hong Kong, bringing into full play our connectivity in this part of the world.” Tourism Tropical North Queensland chief executive Alex de Waal said it would significantly boost Chinese numbers, with another record Chinese New Year expected this month.

“The news of the shared Hong Kong Airlines seasonal services, connecting the Hong Kong gateway with the Gold Coast and Cairns, now being converted to a schedule service is fabulous,” he said.

Airline employee sentenced for discount ticket fraud
25 March 2016
South China Morning Post Excerpt

A Hong Kong Airlines' employee who forged a friend's birth certificate to show they were siblings so she could buy discount tickets was ordered to perform 160 hours of community service.

Company policy allowed staff to buy tickets to Taipei and Seoul at discounts ranging from 80 to 95.5 per cent from the airline and its sister company, Hong Kong Express Airways.

Kowloon City Court was told that each employee could nominate eight family members and a friend to enjoy the benefit.

But Chu Kai-fai, 27, a former cargo sales executive, named his friend Chu Man-wa, 28, as his elder sister.

The application was approved and the discount used to buy two round-trip tickets on February 27 and April 22, 2014 - with Chu Man-wa flying to Taipei and Seoul at HK$400 and HK$600 respectively, saving her HK$4,160.

Upon arrest by the Independent Commission Against Corruption, Chu Kai-fai explained that he had already promised to nominate another friend to enjoy the benefit, and that it was Chu Man-wa who suggested he should name her as his sister and falsify her birth certificate.

Chu Man-wa, an account clerk, admitted she had sent an image of her birth certificate to her friend for editing. The two pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud earlier this month.

7 May 2016
South China Morning Post Excerpt

Seventeen Chinese nationals were injured, with 12 taken to hospital, today as a Hong Kong Airlines flight departing from Bali, in Indonesia, was hit by severe turbulence.

“Twelve people were rushed to a hospital, one of them with a very serious injury,” said Herni Pramuharjo, spokesman of the transport ministry said, according to the Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua. “Five others were treated at the health clinic in the airport. All of them were Chinese nationals.”

The incident occurred when the aeroplane was flying over Borneo, about one hour after flight HX6704, bound for Hong Kong, took off from Bali International Airport.

The plane was forced to return to its original destination.

A spokesman for Hong Kong Airlines confirmed that 14 passengers and three crew members were injured and that most of the injured had now been discharged. One passenger is still in hospital for further checks.

Hong Kong Airlines to Launch Its First Daily Flight to New Zealand
May 13, 2016
Press Release Excerpt

Hong Kong Airlines, the internationally-acclaimed full-service airline, will launch its first daily direct service to Auckland, New Zealand on 10 November 2016. Airbus A332 aircraft with 283 seats, including 24 business class seats will be deployed on the route.

Located in the North Island of New Zealand, Auckland is surrounded by two different harbours on the east and west side of the city. Thanks to the love of sailing by its citizens, Auckland also bears a nickname, "City of Sails". Not only is it the most populous area in the North Island, Auckland has various spectacular natural sceneries in close proximity, such as volcanoes and islands; and together with the mild weather, it has been repeatedly named one of the world’s most liveable cities. You can be almost anywhere in just half an hour from the city centre, including sailing to an island, bungee jumping from the Auckland Bridge, trekking through the rainforest, sampling wines at a vineyard and enjoying the Art Gallery or Aquarium.

Mr. Li Dianchun, Chief Commercial Officer of Hong Kong Airlines, said, “With the success of our service to Australia earlier this year, Hong Kong Airlines is more than delighted to announce this second long haul service, operating daily to Auckland, New Zealand. There has been a steady increase year on year in the number of Hong Kong and China travellers visiting New Zealand. According to official figures by New Zealand Government, as of March 2016, the total number of visitors from Hong Kong and China has recorded a rise in 19.1% and 27.8% respectively.

New player ups the ante on flights to Hong Kong
4 June 2016
The New Zealand Herald Excerpt

Auckland-Hong Kong routes are shaping as a battleground as Hong Kong Airlines enters the market just as incumbent Cathay Pacific rolls out a brand new weapon - the latest long-haul airliner.

Add to the mix Air New Zealand's daily flights using newly refurbished Boeing 777s and there's a big challenge for airline revenue teams but big opportunities for bargain hunters.

Hong Kong Airlines will start flying on November 10 and launched with business-class fares of $2204, less than half that charged by its rivals.

Cathay Pacific, which has a revenue-sharing deal with Air New Zealand, has cut its return fares to China through its Hong Kong base to $1019.

Cathay's director of corporate affairs James Tong said the entry of a new player would help stimulate the market.

"In a sense it's a good sign - it means the whole market is building up and expanding," Tong said.

"From a competitive point of view we welcome another player - there are now three airlines promoting a destination."

Between the three carriers there would be up to four return flights a day between Hong Kong and Auckland and Tong said there was scope for his airline to add even more.

"The Auckland route is doing very well. We are very optimistic about this market."

Cathay will use new Airbus A350XWB planes on the route from October 31.

Ishigaki Route now to become a regular service! I know quite a few people on the Okinawan side who worked hard to get this going with their HK counterparts!

Hong Kong Express launches regular flights between Ishigaki and Hong Kong

Tourists arriving in Ishigaki from Hong Kong via Hong Kong Express, a newly established flight service between Ishigaki and Hong Kong.

June 17, 2016 Ryukyu Shimpo

A Low-Cost Carrier based in Hong Kong, Hong Kong Express, launched its first flight service between Hong Kong and Ishigaki on June 16. A welcoming ceremony was held at the Ishigaki Airport International Terminal to celebrate the newly established service, and involved parties welcomed its first passengers. Regular flights are planned throughout year.

Direct flights will be operated twice a week during June, and it will be increased to three times a week from July. From November to March, the flights will be operated twice a week. The service is the airline’s seventh destination in Japan. It is expected to market Ishigaki as a travel destination with marine activities and beautiful nature. The first flight had almost the full capacity of 172 passengers on board. Staff from the city and a tourism promotion association handed out maps and brochures to welcome the visitors.

The general manager of Hong Kong Express, Charles Johnson, explained the motivation for the new service, saying that Ishigaki has a new airport and is an attractive place providing experiences in nature. Johnson said the company increased the service from twice to three times a week for July because of growing demand. He added that they see this route as important.
