Hong Kong Airlines launches New Flight Service to Yonago, Tottori Prefecture
August 3, 2016
Press Release Excerpt

Commencing on 14 September 2016, Hong Kong Airlines, an internationally-acclaimed full-service airline, will be the first and the only carrier providing direct twice-weekly flight service between Hong Kong and Yonago, Tottori Prefecture, Japan. The new service will be operated by an all-economy class Airbus A320 aircraft, further strengthening the airline’s network in Japan.

Tottori Prefecture is situated in the northeastern part of the Chugoku region in Western Honshu. Tottori Prefecture has four distinct seasons. A coastal prefecture surrounded by several high mountains, with close to 90% of land being mountainous, Tottori Prefecture boasts a wide range of local produce. Japanese watermelons, 20th Century pears, oysters and Matsuba crabs are some of the region’s specialties.

Tottori Prefecture is blessed with bountiful natural landscapes, including Japan’s largest sand dunes, Tottori Sand Dunes. Tottori Sand Dunes spans 16 kilometers in length along the coast and 2 kilometers in width. Wind and coastal tides weave together unique ripples and sand screens that evolve by the minute. There are limitless ways to explore Tottori Sand Dune, from the adrenaline-pumping paragliding and sandboarding, to taking leisurely stroll on a horse-cart or a camel, to riding a cable car for a panoramic view of the coastline. In addition, Tottori Prefecture is home to a great variety of onsens, including the famous ‘Salt Spring’ Kaike Onsen. The hot spring-water from the sea floor of Miho Bay is said to improve digestion and relieve muscle pain.

Growing Hong Kong airline HK Express cuts fares in bid for market share
Aggressive move comes on the back of rocky few months for Cathay Pacific
October 31, 2016

Hong Kong’s only budget airline has released 50,000 discounted tickets in a bid to turn up the heat on local rivals.

The aggressive push from HK Express, on its third birthday, follows Cathay Pacific Airways cutting business class ticket prices through its own discounted *airfares initiative.

Cathay Pacific’s fortunes have taken a turn for the worse in *recent months, with a profit *forecast scrapped and destinations under review.

While dismissing the notion of a fare war, HK Express chief *executive Andrew Cowen said he wanted to get more customers who have never flown with a budget carrier before.

“We obviously monitor our competitors’ fares ... and *sometimes we’ll respond to that,” Cowen said, adding he was *honouring the firm’s commitment to affordable airfares in the many years to come.”

Since launching in 2013, the airline has flown six million *people. It flies to 25 destinations and operates with 16 aircraft.

It has pledged there will soon be new planes and more destinations added.

It employs 750 people, but Cowen said that would grow to 1,300 by the end of next year, with most of the new recruits from Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, the company said it would buy bigger planes to *maximise the use of the take-off and landing slots at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

The airline expects to fly more than four million passengers by the end of 2017, one million more than this year.

That expected surge is partly because of five new Airbus A321 aircraft, which seat 230 passengers – 50 more than the airline’s smaller current jets.

HK Express commits fuel savings to cheaper fares as it unveils new eco-friendly aircraft
Local budget carrier takes delivery of first Airbus A320neo, which promises to fly further and use 20 per cent less fuel by 2020
December 12, 2016

Budget airline HK Express has pledged to funnel the potential fuel savings from its new, eco-friendly aircraft into providing cheaper airfares.

Hong Kong’s fourth biggest airline on Monday took delivery of the first of 12 fuel efficient Airbus A320neos. It will be the first carrier to operate the aircraft with 188 seats – narrowly more than AirAsia, which in September took delivery of its first 186-seat A320neo.

According to Airbus, the aircraft has an additional 500 nautical mile range and will use 20 per cent less fuel per seat by 2020, compared to current engine option aircraft.

HK Express commercial director Luke Lovegrove committed the projected fuel savings to providing lower airfares and carrying additional passengers.

“The lower fuel cost will result in a direct saving on fares and additional eight passengers that we will be able carry on board – so it’s a fantastic aircraft for us,” he said.

Andrew Cowen, the company’s director and CEO, said the A320neo was just one example of how the carrier was working more efficiently, particularly with the facilities at the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA).

Stranded Sapporo passengers return to Hong Kong amid row over HK$300 compensation
Group of 40 travellers caught in Hokkaido snowstorm call for better consumer rights after rejecting ‘grossly inadequate’ offer
December 26, 2016
South China Morning Post Excerpt

The last of more than 2,000 Hong Kong travellers who were stranded in snowbound northern Japan over Christmas were on their way home on Monday night amid criticism from some that an offer to compensate them for the chaos was “grossly inadequate’’.

A group of 40 angry Hong Kong Airlines passengers rejected a HK$300 “goodwill gesture”, accusing the airline of poor communication and inadequate provision of essential items like food, water and blankets during their ordeal sparked by the worst snow storm Japan has seen for more than half a century.

The Hongkongers were among 6,000 travellers affected as 96cm of snow fell in Japan’s Hokkaido region at the weekend, shutting down New Chitose Airport, which serves the city of Sapporo. A backlog of flights left airlines scrambling to organise extra services. Hong Kong carriers scheduled at least a dozen additional flights.
