Corp honchos flock to IIM-K for B-school refresher
Quote:

IIM-K Campus, Kozhikode.

Chatterjee, Director of the Indian Institute of Management – Kozhikode (IIM-K) in Kerala, is addressing a management development programme, based on his book Timeless Leadership, 18 Leadership Sutras from The Bhagavad Gita, and his class of senior executives is keen to learn what for them is evidently new ground.

Chatterjee points to this class of senior executives as an example of how IIM-K has been ramping up its executive education programmes the past few years.

The B-school has run programmes on manufacturing excellence, on logistics, programmes for school teachers and principals. It even had the whole Kerala Cabinet for a programme on governance last year.

Given the tremendous change that the economy is going through, Chatterjee, in a recent interview on campus, says that there is a huge need for mid-career executive education.

So much so that IIM-K is readying its new MDP block on the campus. Describing it as a ‘work in progress’, Chatterjee says courses are being conducted alongside as the building receives its finishing touches.

It has already hosted a course for the Indian Army.

This new block, built on the same hillock as the IIM-K campus, offers a breathtaking view of a carpet of coconut trees as far as the eye can see.

When done, it will have 120 well-appointed rooms, including suites for CEOs, and an ayurvedic spa as well.

The Coimbatore Ayurveda Sala will manage the spa.

KOCHI CAMPUS

Next academic year, IIM-K will also kick off its city campus in Kochi. This course will be for working professionals.

“Instead of people coming to the B-school, we’re taking it to them. The reason that I am going to Kochi is that we want to be closer to the market space. If you are a business school we can’t sit on a mountain top and dictate to the commercial world this is how you should do business.”

The school has zeroed in on a building for the programme for which it expects an initial batch of 60.

Chatterjee says eventually the two-year MBA itself may metamorphose into shorter module programmes.

“The cost of not connecting your knowledge to action is pretty high. I learn something today and apply it two years hence when things have changed. So companies may send their people for four modules of three months each followed by going back to their jobs. What matters is transferring that intellectual vigour to the jobs space. If you can’t, then the value of the MBA is gone,” he explains.

Companies prefer MBAs with one to three years of experience. Chances of getting a job later also increases for students. “Companies can benchmark the experience but can’t benchmark their knowledge from IIMs,” says Chatterjee of the trends he sees.

Kerala students to go on 10-day NASA trek
Quote:
A team of 25 students of the Global Public School at Thiruvaniyur in Kochi would leave for the US in April for a 10-day visit to Florida-based Kennedy Space Centre, a unit of NASA. The trip titled ‘NASA Trek’ is the first of its kind.

The students are from Classes 7 to 10; 13 of them boys and 12 girls. They will be accompanied by two teachers. The school officials are tightlipped about NASA Trek and declined to provide details of the selected students or about their programmes. They said the details would be finalised by January.

Students are scheduled to visit the Kennedy Space Centre’ s shuttle landing facility to study the vehicle assembly building system and view the Space Shuttle launch pads at NASA.

Students will be exposed to the astronaut training experience programme, wherein they can hear first-hand from a veteran NASA astronaut and experience a space shuttle mission simulation. They can also perform hands-on space exploration activities.

Students will also get a chance to have lunch with astronauts, interact with scientists and visit the ‘Hall of Fame’, where they will experience the human side of Space, complete with the sights, sounds and experiences of famous astronauts who first ventured into the frontiers of Space.

After the programme at the Kennedy Space Centre, students will also have the opportunity to visit Universal Studios, the White House,Lincoln Memorial, Capitol Building, the Supreme Court, the Space Museum, Union Station, and the World War II Memorial Building, all in Washington.

Kochi an ideal location for CBSE regional centre, say stakeholders

what to do... stake holders wants it in Kochi... but minister has his own interest

The CBSE Schools Management Association, principals, teachers and parents are happy with the move to set up a CBSE regional centre and teachers’ training centre (TTC) in the state.

However, they expressed the need to have the regional centre located centrally so as to be within the access of people from across the state.Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor had said that the centre would come up in the capital city and the TTC would be set up here.

But the stakeholders are of the opinion that Kochi would be the ideal location for the centre, while the TTC can be set up in Thiruvananthapuram. The majority of CBSE schools are located across here and in the northern region of the state. There are around 700 CBSE schools in all.“The centre is being set up for the convenience of the stakeholders.

Kochi would be the ideal location,” said T P M Ibrahim Khan, president, CBSE Schools Management Association.Even the Kendriya Vidyalaya Regional Centre has been set up here and all the Kendriya Vidyalaya follow the CBSE syllabus.

“As the city is located centrally and within the easy reach of students, teachers and the managements, it would be ideal to have the centre here,” said CBSE, ICSE Schools Parents Forum coordinator Dr Sanil Kumar. The principals of various CBSE schools are also of the opinion that having a centre here would make it more accessible for the stakeholders across the state.

Currently, for every correction that needs to be made in the student’s name or other certificate details, or for obtaining transfer certificates for going abroad, the parents have to go to the Chennai regional office. The CBSE board has four regions across the country.

The Chennai region, the largest, has 2,698 schools from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Kerala under it.

I hope its not any constitutional requirement..... Isn't it...

Anyway, the demand was made by the stakeholders, not by any politicians.... Kochi, being the district, that hold the maximum number of CBSE schools surely deserves..... Then rest all are political decisions....

Process to declare Cusat IIESR on

KOCHI: Central government has sought opinion from other departments on a proposal to convert Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) into a leading science education and research institute under the Central government.
"The Central government has sought opinion from other ministries on the proposal to take CUSAT as an Indian Institute for Education, Science and Research (IIESR). Once the suggestions and recommendations from other departments is collected, the proposal will be placed before the cabinet for final approval", said a Cusat official pursuing the matter with the Centre.
Recently, Union minister of state for Human Resources Development Shashi Tharoor, had said, "The initial procedures for making CUSAT at IIESR have been started by HRD. It is a long procedure including working out of financial liabilities and finally it will be placed before Parliament and required to be passed by Cabinet".
Kerala government had long back submitted a proposal to the Centre to take up CUSAT as an Indian Institute for Education, Science and Research, rather than as a Central university. Cusat officials believe that once they are declared IIESR they will have more autonomy and better opportunity for conducting research.

Cusat yet to get Rs 10 crore promised by state government

KOCHI: Cochin University of Science and Technology is still waiting for the state government to release Rs 10 crore that was promised as interim relief to meet the financial deficit of Rs 50 crore.
"Government had sanctioned the amount and we had sent the bills showing the expenditure of the university. However, we have yet to receive the money", said Cusat official.
Earlier, a high-level committee of the university comprising the vice-chancellor, registrar and standing committee chairman, approached the government at Thiruvananthapuram to deal with the fund deficit. The committee met the chief minister, education minister and finance minister and submitted a three-page memorandum in which it was stated that the university presently has Rs 50 crore financial deficits and the government has to sanction more money for Cusat to tide over the crisis.
Even as the university's annual expenses has increased over the years, the state government's financial grant to the university has been curtailed, resulting in a major financial crunch, which it has been unable to overcome in spite of introducing new courses. This year, to reduce its financial liability university took various steps, which includes starting new courses, increasing the number of student enrolment in self-financing courses and cutting down on the overall expenditure of the departments.

Where did the issue of commercial city come up , when something related with education is said ,or do yu think that Kochi is upto the standards of Bangalore or Chennai to make such claims .Trivandrum is the legitimate location for this office as it is the administrative capital where the state education department and its machinery operates & CBSE Regional office will officially liaise more with them than hold tea parties for CBSE association .

If stake holder facility is the concern then please allow us to establish a High Court bench here, as State Govt is the biggest stake holder with the honourable HC of Kerala , than create hurdles on a subject that was unanimously passed by the state assembly.

What Urban Rural divide exists between Trivandrum and Ernakulam ? Other than a Harbour and couple of Heavy Industries there is absolutely no big difference between the two cities.

The count of CBSE schools is not of any botheration as they are opening like petty shops these days . If easy accessibility is the question then please arrange to shift all offices to Thrissur which is the Central place in Kerala.

Incase of High Court we are asking for a High Court bench in Trivandrum & not to shift the HC from Kochi to Trivandrum .
