New Challenges in Computer Era

It was a rare moment when technology bowed to human intelligence. At the 26th regional abacus competition organised by Brainobrain Kids Academy, schoolchildren gave a close call to computers with their mathematical skills.

The students showed their competency by solving a total of 75 mathematical problems within a time span of three minutes. The first two groups solved the problem using the abacus technique while the rest banked on mental calculation to solve the same.

Concentration, self-confidence, intelligence, speed, accuracy and discipline were the qualities that were analysed during the abacus competition.
The competition conducted for children between the age group of 5 and 14 saw the participation of students from Kerala, Nagercoil and the UAE.
A total of 1,500 students, including 100 students from the UAE and 15 from Nagercoil, participated in the event.

DIG M R Ajit Kumar was the chief guest at the programme held at the
Panampilly Rotary Balabhavan.

Samuel Basil from Abu Dhabi, Abeeth Aikambaran, Gopi Krishnan, Gokul and Anand Raghuram from Dubai, Gokul Krishna and Aditya Rao from Sharjah, Jasim A from Aluva, Jagannath from Cherthala, Vishnu K R from Irinjalakuda, Aravind M from Thiruvananthapuram, Surya Paul from Kozhikode, Shaun B Oommen from Kathrikadavu and Harikrishnan from Palluruthy emerged winners in various groups.

Kochi's experiment, making success waves

Initiated a year back in government schools to instil responsibility and social commitment in young minds, the Student Police Cadet (SPC) programme is fast catching the fancy of the teachers and students alike in Kerala.

SPC is a voluntary student organisation with an objective of creating a vigilant, peaceful and development-oriented society by inculcating a sense of responsibility, social commitment and the readiness for selfless service in young minds.

The project was conceived at a workshop in Kochi in 2006 and it was launched on an experimental basis in three schools at Ernakulam during 2008.

Last year, the state government decided to extend the project to whole of Kerala by initiating it in two schools each of the 14 districts of the state.

As part of the programme, selected students are given a police uniform and a week-long training on maintenance of law and order, traffic rules, first aid, disaster management. Besides civic sense, sense of equality, a secular outlook, leadership qualities and the love of adventure are inculcated in students.

Speaking to IANS, Senior Superintendent of Police P. Vijayan, the nodal officer of what is billed as the first such initiative in the world, said there has been a huge demand from numerous schools in the state to set up one such unit in their school.

"Right now, the programme is there in 127 government and government-aided schools where more than 12,000 students are enrolled in the project. We will take this initiative forward to other schools in a time-bound manner," said Vijayan.

"Through this project, we want to tell the young people that the need of the hour is to obey the law," said Vijayan.

In the programme, a police officer not below the rank of circle inspector acts as police-student liaison officer while the principal of the school provides two teachers, one of them a female, for conducting the programme.

V. Vignesh, a Class 9 student and an active member of the SPC group at the Government Model High School here, said the programme has given him a new direction in life.

"We feel we have a lot of responsibility to take this novel initiative forward because if only we are successful, will this project achieve its desired objectives," Vignesh told IANS.

Asked if the programme affects his studies, he said: "No, because it takes place either before or after our classes. The response has been tremendous and so selection of students is getting tough."

K.K. Shemeen, a physical education teacher at the Government Boys High School in Malappuram district, said that in an year the activities of SPC have become one of the most talked about things in his school.

"In the first year, the response was lukewarm. But this time, we had a huge response. Every week, we have two special periods where the students are taught on what their role is in this project."

"The only problem we face is the money required and we are told that f

An education loan adalat will be held at the Conference Hall in the Collectorate on August 11 to resolve the issues related to granting education loan for those who are opting to pursue engineering and medicine courses.

The adalat will be inaugurated by PWD Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju. A committee has been set up under the chairmanship of District Collector P I Sheik Pareeth to redress the grievances related to education loan.

“Certain operational issues are reported in the district while sanctioning education loans. A one-to-one conversation between the students, parents and banks is arranged, which will help us know the prevailing situation,” Sheik Pareeth told reporters here on Monday. Those who wish to attend the adalat has to register with the Lead District Manager before August 8.

Banks are following the guidelines issued by the Indian Banks Association while sanctioning education loans. The students who secure admission for higher studies under merit quota through entrance exams are considered for educational loan. Loans upto `4 lakh are given without security or guarantee. Loans above `4 lakh and upto `7.5 lakh are given by obtaining a satisfactory personal guarantee and loans above `7.5 lakh is sanctioned against collateral security.

“About `90,000 crore was spent on educational loans till March 2010. The number of self-financing colleges is on the rise and they levy huge amount as fees,” said K R Jayaprakash, Union Bank Manager. Though the banks are giving loans, they are not being repaid. About 20 per cent of the loan is due,” he said. The adalat will be from 10.30 am till 2 pm.

SCMS Scientists develop cost effective Chikungunya vaccines

Scientists here have developed a genetically-engineered antigen to diagnose chikungunya with greater accuracy.

The scientists, from the SCMS Biotechnology Centre here, are confident that the antigen would make diagnosis of the disease more cost-effective, apart from giving accurate results.

They are also just a whisker away from inventing chikungunya vaccine.
Native antigen, which is produced from the same virus which causes the disease, is being currently used to diagnose chikungunya.

Health hazards while culturing the virus, high cost and less accuracy are the main drawbacks of the native antigen diagnosis. Both native antigen method and the recombinant (genetically-engineered) antigen method use Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) for the diagnosis.

The difference lies in the use of the antigens.

To develop the antigen, the scientists amplified the gene from the protein coat of the virus and purified it, a report published in the Journal of Immunological Methods, the official journal of the Association of Medical Laboratory Immunologists, USA, stated.

"Then the gene was cloned into e-coli bacteria by genetic engineering method. In the next step, we isolated the recombinant protein the protein of the virus from the bacteria cells and confirmed it using Western Blot Test," C Mohankumar, who led the team of scientists, said. He is also the director of SCMS Biotechnology Centre.

"Identifying the antigenic domain in the recombinant protein was the next stage. We tested it on 180 persons who had already been diagnosed with the disease. Then, we confirmed it using a computer software to detect the antigenic characteristics," Mohankumar said.

The recombinant antigen is extremely small in size just 11 kilodalton, the unit for measuring the molecular mass of protein.

"With high accuracy and low mass, it will be easy to produce a vaccine by using attenuated or inactivated antigen. We have already approached the Department of BioTechnology, Government of India, and Indian Council of Medical Research for securing their nod to produce the vaccine," he said.

The authorities of the School of Engineering and Technology (SCMS) have informed the state government that the admissions to engineering courses should be made purely on merit basis.

In a statement G P C Nayar, the founder of SCMS Engineering College, has made his stand clear that the faculty and staff of all his institutions are selected purely on merit. Caste, creed and religion were never a criterion. He also said the management of SCMS Group of Institutions never accepted any sort of capitation fee for the admission of any programme.

He has already requested the State Entrance Commissioner to allot students to his engineering college purely on merit.

Ernakulam to soon become 100% Class X literate
Quote:
In all possibility Ernakulam could be the first district in the state to have all citizens between 17 and 35 years to clear Class 10 examination. To ensure that the district achieves 100 per cent success rate in clearing Class 10 examination by 2013, a futuristic mission ‘Youth@10’ is currently underway. A venture by the District Literacy Mission, Kakkanad and the district panchayat, this is the first of its kind in Kerala that awaits a successful culmination.
Be it in the public sector or private sector, many are limping along for want of proper educational qualifications and it seems that this project could be an absolute panacea for them.
“The number of persons applying for Class X equivalency examinations are increasing as in many cases the prospect of promotions depends upon proper qualifications. Hence we decided to undertake this unique project,” said District Project Coordinator K V Ratheesh.
Though there has not been any specific fund allotted for this special scheme, the authorities concerned feel confident that they could implement it effectively.
“No special fund has been allocated for this purpose. But it could be implemented effectively provided all the local bodies consider it as their own project,” he said. The mission has not invited special applications for the Youth@10 programme.
“As the number of applicants appearing for the Class X examinations have surged, we decided to filter the applicants,” Ratheesh said.
The district panchayat has been giving its full support to the District Literacy Mission to execute the project.
“We are confident of completing the project by 2013. This would be a proper platform for those people who are lagging behind for want of proper education. So far we have got more than 1,500 applications,” said district panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappally.
The project, which was initiated on May 19, has already finished with the registration procedures. “We have also taken steps to institute awards to those municipalities and panchayats that register more number of applications. The Literacy Mission has been conducting other programmes like Class IV, Class VII and Class X equivalency exams. We are also conducting Art fests for those who have applied for Class IV,VII and Youth@10 equivalency exams,” he said.

This is their Management School, which has been consistently ranked number 21 among National B School rankings and always in top 3 outside IIMs, within Kerala.

Another happy news is that, they have acquired a 62 year old business school based in London which would be soon rebranded as SCMS London and dual degree system would take place from next batch onwards. They are also planning to start another B-School in Dubai and Bangalore soon, which would be first Kerala based Educational group to expand outside Kerala.

They are also planning to start a new institute for their prestigious and oldest degree- PGP in Advertising and Public Relations as a new school outside SCMS Cochin with more professional creative side courses.
