A Japanese gift to Kochi.

The Alumni Society of AOTS Kerala is setting up a modern multi-facility complex named Nippon Kerala Centre (NKC) in Kochi.

The AOTS (Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship) is an autonomous non-profit HRD organisation functioning under the Government of Japan for development of human resources of developing countries.

The NKC project, to be set up in association with the Kerala Government, is to enhance the value of Kerala as an investment destination by enhancing the knowledge and skills of Kerala's manpower, through training and education in world class production and management systems. The NKC is a multi-crore project, funded by AOTS members, and will be set up at Kinfra Hitech Park at Kalamassery.

This multiplex will house a management centre, a cultural centre, a language institute, a hi-tech library, and a quality testing lab among other facilities. The first phase of NKC is scheduled for commissioning in November.

We had earlier discussed about this project and none had idea about it.

Now its official and clear

Still not sure about its worth! The news and the video proclaims it as a mega project

Its going to be big days for Cochin soon.... Along with the mega investor meet- Emerging Kerala planned next year, Kochi will be hosting sequel to International Education Meet to promote Kerala as an educational hub

Quote:
Aiming to make education sector in the state globally competitive and to establish the state as a world-class destination for higher studies, the state government is planning to organise an international education meet.

By equipping the state with international standards in education, the government feels that more students from abroad would enrol for programmes offered here.

Moreover, creation of such standards would also help in checking the outflow of students from India to foreign countries.

The global education meet is planned as a sequel to the International Education Meet(IEM) held in Kochi from February 6 to 8, 2006, during the tenure of the previous UDF Government.

The last meet had kicked up a controversy with several social and youth organisations staging protest against it alleging that the government was promoting commercialisation of the education sector.

Onam Gardens at Maharaja's College

The Maharaja’s College has come up with an eco-friendly way to mark Onam this year. An Onam garden or ‘Onapoonthottam’ will be cultivated within the college premises. The garden is aimed at conserving indigenous varieties of Onam flowers which are now slowly losing space in our Onam carpets.

“Many of these flowers are now dismissed as being wild flowers. They are not grown in our home gardens. During the Onam season we tend to buy flowers, mostly bigger and more attractive ones. So these indigenous flowers are slowly moving out of our flower carpets”, said Rohini Nair, head of the Nature Club at Maharaja’s College.

The ‘Onapoonthottam’ is an initiative of the Nature Club and the Department of Botany. In the first stage, the flowers will be sourced from the students and from the college campus itself. “Many students have shown interest and agreed to contribute to the garden. In the coming days we are looking forward to planting a number of varieties,” said Sonu Sebastian, secretary of the nature club. Thumba, Thulasi, Mukkutti etc have already been
planted.

The nature club is looking at continuing with the maintenance of the garden even after the Onam season. “The college is looking at obtaining some rare varieties like ‘Kaaka Poo’ and ‘Kannanthali.’ Some of them are difficult to obtain now. We are trying to keep the garden as natural as possible. Lots of people say that the Maharaja’s campus looks unkempt and weedy. But this has actually helped us obtain a lot of plants which would have disappeared had the campus been mechanically well-maintained”, says Rohini Nair.

Cloud Campus for first time in India, in Kochi

Leading IT-training institute NIIT, has launched Cloud Campus in Kochi. Claimed to be the first of its kind in India, Cloud Campus is a programme which allows the students to learn through the cloud-learning methodology. The students can learn the subjects in his own way and whenever and wherever they want by accessing the cloud campus network using a netbook or a mobile device through which study materials will be provided.

Cloud Campus was launched in Kochi by NIIT chief operating officer P Rajendran and vice-president Unnikrishnan K Raghavan.

“The New Age GNIIT programmes will help create a pool of trained professionals for today’s knowledge economy. The use of cloud platform ensures higher mobility for students who can procure the industry endorsed curriculum, even on the move and equip themselves with a skillset that employers value,” said Rajendran.

NIIT Cloud Campus offers three courses in the cloud campus- GNIIT, GNIIT for engineering students and post-graduate programme in IT (PGPIT). Each student enrolling for any of the courses will be provided with a netbook, a well designed digital courseware and a fully paid data card.

The Cochin University of Science and Technology is all set to develop a unique automated sound classifier to identify and differentiate sounds beneath and around the coastal waters. The Rs 43.55 lakh project titled, HMM Based Target Classifier, with improved success rates, has been sanctioned by the Naval Research Board, Government of India.

“Through this project we are intending to develop a Classifier, which would enable to differentiate specifically each and every sound in the Indian Ocean, whether it be a small ship or a submarine.”

Presently, the country, which has only a SONAR classifier system to identify these ocean sounds, maximum exploits the human senses to identify the sound of any movement in the ocean.Every ship, boat or submarine, in spite of having a unique combination of engines, propellers, etc., has a separate noise. But, the SONAR classifier does not enable to classify minute distinctive sounds.

“Sometimes the sound of a ship approaching is hindered by the other sounds in the ocean,” Assistant Investigator of the project and Cusat professor Supriya MH said.

Though similar researches have taken place in the past on developing such classifiers, it has not been successful as many of the techniques have proved to be complex.

There was a time when theatre was popular in campuses across Kerala, reminisces Rajesh Sharma, recipient of best actor and director awards in the state professional drama competitions. But after an arid patch, it is observed that colleges are slowly reverting to theatre arts and performances.

"We are travelling across the state with drama workshops to bring back the traditional theatre art form, which is endangered," says Sharma. "Fortunately, one can see the attitude of public changing. They crave theatre arts, which is a positive sign for the industry and for artists like us," he added.

Sharma, who has won the best actor award in the state professional drama competition in 2001 and an award for best director and second best actor in state amateur drama competition in 2010, is in the city leading a theatre workshop at the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) campus. The workshop organized by the university union and department of youth welfare is attracting theatre arts lovers on campus.

In the workshop that will conclude on Thursday, many students were seen spending their time learning the basic techniques of theatre art, said to be fading from campuses.

The foundation for the main campus of the Indian Maritime University's (IMU) Kochi centre will be laid by the Union Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan here on September 18. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will be the chief guest.

The function, scheduled for 11 a.m. at Hotel Le Meridien, will be attended by Union Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies K.V. Thomas and Minister for Ports and Excise K. Babu among others.

The function will also mark the inauguration of the three academic blocks of the IMU campus here, which had started its courses two years ago. The main academic and administrative blocks of the IMU Kochi campus will be completed in a year at a cost of around Rs. 20 crore, said the Vice-Chancellor of the IMU P. Vijayan. The main building will be a five-storey structure.

COURSES

The blocks being inaugurated now will house the Nautical Sciences and Marine Engineering and Business School, said Dr. Vijayan.

At present, the IMU campus here is offering one-year diploma in nautical science leading to the award of B.Sc. degree in Nautical Science; B.Sc. in ship repair and ship building; MBA in Port and Shipping Management and Post-Graduate Diploma in Marine Engineering.

The IMU Kochi campus will launch its LLB (Maritime Law) course in January, Dr. Vijayan said.

There are 180 students already attending classes at the IMU campus, functioning out of its temporary premises let out by the Cochin Port Trust.

The Indian Maritime University was established as a Central University with the Indian Maritime University Act 2008 coming into effect in November of the year, integrating seven maritime institutions in the country.

The IMU, headquartered in Chennai, has campuses also in Mumbai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam.

Oommen Chandy makes IIT promise
Quote:
Chief Minister Oommen Chandy promised a group of former IITians on Thursday that he will locate land to set up the proposed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) ahead of his Delhi visit next week.

Chandy and his Cabinet colleagues will be in New Delhi on September 22 and 23 to hold discussions with central ministers and senior officials regarding pending projects of the State.

Chandy is keen on taking up the IIT project and wants to locate land before submitting the proposal, so that it would look more solid.

The former IITians — A.E. Muthunayagam, T.P. Sreenivasan, M.P. Rajan, Muralee Thummarukudy and K.V. Jayakumar — told him that at least 300 acres would be required.

The delegation also submitted a concept note highlighting the strong points of the State for getting an IIT.
The experts urged the government to carry out necessary administrative groundwork for presenting a strong case before the Centre. At present, only Kerala and Karnataka are the two major states which do not have an IIT.
