Poznań opens new tram depot
13 May 2014

POLAND: MPK Poznań inaugurated the first new tram depot in the city for 30 years on May 11. The 17 ha site at Franowo in the southeast of the city has room for 100 trams of 35 m in length, with provision for expansion to house 150 trams including 20 up to 45 m long. Unlike older depots, all vehicles will be stabled under cover.

Depot management is highly automated, with remote control of the 109 turnouts, detection of rolling stock condition and positioning of trams. A four-track maintenance facility includes a laser wheel measurement system, underfloor wheel lathe, lifts, ramps and a stand for crash repairs.

In addition to 250 tram drivers, there will be 100 depot staff. Franowo has absorbed the work of the Gajowa depot, which was recently closed, and will also replace the Madalińskiego depot which is to be closed soon. It will also be used to accommodate trams currently stabled at Budziszyńska.

A contract for construction of the new depot was awarded to ZUE and Elektrobudowa in 2011. The final cost was 258m złoty, 59% of which was met through EU funds

Two Polish tram openings
02 Jul 2014

An extension of Toruń’s tram network to the Bielany residential district and Nicolaus Copernicus University opened on June 24

POLAND: An extension of Toruń’s tram network to the Bielany residential district and Nicolaus Copernicus University opened on June 24. The 1·7 km extension was built by Budimex at a cost of 49·5m złoty, including five stops, a turning loop and upgrades to existing tracks.

It is the first extension of the 22 km metre-gauge network in the city for 28 years.

On June 29 Tramwaje Śląskie revived revenue services on Route 7 in Bytom, which had been closed in 2008 owing to the poor condition of the track. The reopened 2·7 km section from Bytom Łagiewniki Targowisko to Bytom Urząd Pracy has been rebuilt on a reserved alignment, with the elimination of two road crossings and single track sections

Olsztyn selects new tramway contractors
26 Aug 2014

POLAND: Skanska signed a 150m złoty contract with the city of Olsztyn on August 19 for the construction of 6 km of tram route by September 2015.

Construction of the standard gauge network officially began in September 2012, but in 2013 the city terminated FCC Construcción’s contract, citing a lack of progress.

The scope of works includes a double-track section from Osiedle Jaroty to ul Obiegowa and a single-track branch along ul Tuwima to the University of Warmia & Mazury, including a passing loop. A rectifier substation for the 600 V DC traction supply is also to be built.

The city has selected Torpol as the contractor for the remaining 5 km section. The 61m złoty contract covers construction of tracks north from ul Obiegowa to the railway station. Completion is due 400 days from contract signature.

The project is 85% financed by EU funds. Solaris Bus & Coach is to supply 15 low-floor trams under a €30m contract signed in 2012

Pesa selected for Lodz LRV order
Tuesday, September 09, 2014

MPK Lodz has selected Pesa Bydgoszcz as preferred bidder for a contract to supply 22 low-floor LRVs for the city's 120km metre-gauge tram network.

Pesa submitted a bid of Zlotys 166.2m ($US 51.2m) for the contract, while the only other shortlisted bidder, Solaris, offered a price of Zlotys 169.2m.

Pesa will supply its Swing LRV which is already in service in Warsaw, Gdansk, and Szczecin. Deliveries are due to start in October 2015, although the order is subject to the conclusion of a funding agreement with Poland's Ministry of Infrastructure and Development.

MPK Lodz currently operates a fleet of 456 trams, the most modern being a batch of 10 type 122n LRVs supplied by Pesa in 2007.

Prototype tram presented to Bydgoszcz
30 Oct 2014

Pesa President Tomasz Zaboklicki (left) officially presented the tram to Bydgoszcz Mayor Rafał Bruski, photo by Ryszard Piech

POLAND: Pesa presented a pre-series prototype Swing tram for Bydgoszcz on October 30, six months ahead of the original schedule.

The Tramwaj Fordon subsidiary of Bydgoszcz city council ordered 12 Swing for 109m złoty earlier this year for use on the 9·5 km Fordon extension.

The prototype will undergo two months of trials so that Pesa can test features which have been installed to cope with gradients of up to 6% and sharp curves on the metre gauge network. Series deliveries are due to take place next year.

The 100% low-floor five-section vehicle is 30·1 m long and 2 350 mm wide with capacity for 207 passengers. Four 150 kW traction motors give a maximum speed of 70 km/h.

The PESA trams look quite modern but not beautiful, to be honest... Are they good/reliable though?

This version IS beautiful compared to Sowings delivered for example to Warsaw

We can say that Pesa trams are suffering from not the best quality (at least for polish market), but situation is getting better every year from what I hear. This version of Swing should be reliable as producion is going on for some years and most of the things that didn't work very well were tweaked.

Wrocław orders Pesa Twist supercapacitor trams
18 Dec 2014

POLAND: MPK Wrocław signed a contract with sole bidder Pesa on December 15 for the supply of six Twist trams with an option for 19 more.

The order is part of the Integrated Rail Transport System in Greater Wroclaw Stage II programme. The city transport authority hopes that part of the 50m złoty cost will be covered from EU funds, although this has not yet been confirmed. This would also be a factor in deciding whether to draw down on the option.

The three-section trams would be the first 100% low-floor trams in Wrocław. They would be 32 m long and 2 400 mm wide with capacity for 222 passengers at 5/m˛, including 58 seated. Maximum speed would be 70 km/h and the trams would include regenerative braking, supercapacitor energy storage and air-conditioning. Deliveries are due to begin next year

Łódź signs tram contract with Pesa
06 Jan 2015

POLAND: MPK Łódź signed a contract with Pesa on December 30 for the supply of 22 Swing trams. The transport authority says that this is one of the largest tram tenders in the city’s history. Pesa was selected over Solaris, which was the only other bidder.

The five-section unidirectional low-floor trams would be 30·5 m long and 2 400 mm wide with capacity for 207 passengers, including 40 seated. The air-conditioned vehicles would feature walkthrough gangways with a minimum width of 770 mm, with access through four double doors and two single doors. Other onboard features would include a ticket vending machine, a passenger counting system and real-time diagnostic reporting. Maximum speed would be 70 km/h.

The 166m złoty contract is 40% financed with EU funds and includes maintenance and depot staff training. The trams are to enter service from late 2015 and will serve the main east-west route; the infrastructure refurbishment project is due to end around then. This will be the second order of Pesa trams for the metre-gauge network, following the 10 that have been in service since 2008
