POLAND: The European Commission has approved €293m from the Cohesion Fund for five public transport projects in four Polish cities. The projects are being financed under the Polish Infrastructure & Environment operational programme, and aim to modernise public transport in a sustainable way to improve comfort and give shorter journey times.
  • Warszawa: €41m towards the €51·3m purchase of 20 double-deck coaches, two driving cars and two locomotives to operate on the busiest lines in the metropolitan area.
  • Warszawa: €91·7m for the €141m purchase of 85 low-floor trams.
  • Łódź: €85·8m towards the €110·8m cost of the Łódź Fabryczna Multimodal Hub project, which includes construction and upgrading of tram infrastructure, and the creation of a tram and rail interchange and a park & ride site.
  • Szczecin: €41·7m for the €52·2m modernisation of tram track in the western districts and refurbishment of Pogodno depot for low-floor cars.
  • Poznań: €33·2m for the €52·3m Phases I and II of renewal of the tram and trolleybus networks, including modernisation of 5·3 km of infrastructure along ul Grunwaldzka and on routes linking the stadium to the city centre, main station and airport. This has been underway since early 2012, and was implemented in connection with the Euro 2012 football championship
All five projects are expected to be completed by the end of the current year.

2015.02.14 - suspension of Line 18 in Ruda Sląska (Silesia)

Effective 2015.02.14, tram #18 will no longer be running. The tram runs between Ruda Sląska and Bytom in Silesia, near Katowice in southern Poland. The suspension of service is due to condition of tracks, obsolete rolling stock and motor vehicles sharing a narrow road with trams. In the last 10 years there have been more than 500 accidents involving the tram on this route.

http://transinfo.pl/text.php?id=69364

Tram service will be replaced with bus 118.

50 years ago, in 1965, the Olsztyn tram system (1000mm) was closed.

From 2011 completely new 1435mm tram system in Olsztyn (northern Poland) is being constructed:

Unfortunately, I heard that these new Pesa trams for Wroclaw have hit a snag...

http://wroclawuncut.com/2015/06/18/m...big-for-stops/

Quote:
A red faced MPK have admitted their new multi-million złoty trams are too big for certain stops, a fault that was only discovered after the trams were tested yesterday evening.

The trams, labeled by Pesa as their 'twist model', were to be the first and only trams in Wroclaw that are completely low floor. Each vehicle is 32 meters long and 2.4 meters wide, with the chassis split into three flexi sections. At full capacity the trams will be able to hold 222 passengers, with 58 of those sitting down.

Wroclaw have bought 8 of the trams at a total cost of 66 million złotys (therefore each tram costs approximately. 8.3 million zł). Sadly, for the time being the vehicles will not be seen on Wroclaw's tracks. In the very first test ride last night, it was found that the tram is too close to the kerb at the stops. This has been confirmed by Agnieszka Korzeniowska, MPK's spokesperson. Agnieszka did say however that both MPK and Pesa will be working on a solution in the coming days.

According to Gazeta Wroclawska, the problem is caused by a part on the under tray of the tram, which is scraping against the kerb on the tram stop after the tram has come round a bend.

The situation is both a nightmare and a major embarrassment for MPK, who planned to show off the new trams to the public tomorrow morning. The 11am presentation at Teatralna street has now been canceled and replaced with a media only event at Borek tram depot. It is rumoured that the decision to pull out of the presentation was not merely because of today's negative headlines, but rather due to the fact that the tram is simply not capable of making the journey!

From Railway Gazette:

Polish tram projects receive EU loans
10 Jul 2015

POLAND: The European Investment Bank has signed two loan agreements for tram projects in Poland.

Bank Pekao is to receive 231m złoty, which it will lend to Tramwaje Śląskie. This will be used for the modernisation of the power supplies and 63 km of track, as well as the purchase of 42 trams. Of these, 30 Pesa Twist 100% low-floor trams were delivered in 2013-14 after TS placed an order in 2012, and the remaining 12 partly low-floor trams are being supplied by Modertrans. A further 95 trams are to be modernised.

A separate 92m złoty loan to MPK Kraków covers the purchase of 36 Krakowiak trams from Pesa. The first of these was delivered in June after a contract was signed in July 2014. The 42·8 m long tram is the longest in Poland

Construction of Szczeciński Szybki Tramwaj (SST - the Szczecin Fast Tram) initiated in April 2013. Construction works were carried out by a consortium MYTOLL - Strabag. The value of the contract (signed on 11th April 2013) was 165,8 million złoty (some 40 million euros). The new stretch, 4.0 kilometres long, was inaugurated on 29th August 2015:

No tramway network has been opened in Poland before, for about 100 years!
There have actually been one, opened in 1959 in Częstochowa.
