Lol, just noticed it now. The image comes up a lot differently on the SSC Android app than on the regular website!

I thought the "Beautiful Burnout" thing on soon might have been the music of Underworld and I saw something the other day saying it does. Might have to go.

This is from an application from Art Rage to the CoP for sponsorship of Fringe World..

"The festival’s hub is located in the Perth CBD. The venue itself is likely to stimulate wide general public interest as it is a highly visible yet inactive Perth landmark. The location and name of the festival hub is currently subject to media embargo."

http://cityofperth.wa.gov.au/documentdb/2692.pdf

Where could it be?

Treasury building would have to be too dangerous, wouldn't it?

The Bell Tower is as inactive as they come.

Or maybe they'll give that little pyramid on the foreshore a last hurrah before it meets the wrecking ball?

Does anyone know if The Nutcracker is playing in Perth. I Googled it and couldn't find anything other than a December 2012 production. Seems strange. When I lived in Korea there were two ballet companies that staged productions every year, and my crappy little hometown in Canada with a population of 40,000 had it every year. Maybe it's not a bit thing in Australia?

Yeah WA Ballet are doing it late 2012. I don't see why they would do it more than every couple of years. So many other productions to stage.

In North America most ballet companies stage it every year. It's a cash cow.

If they held it there, might not it stir up some stiff opposition to it being demolished I wonder?

I hope not. I like the building, but think that the proposed replacement plans warrant it's demolition. I might regret that statement in the future, bit I think this is a but different to past mistakes where we have replaced beautiful buildings with concrete shells.

I think it's a terrible mistake, we've been over that though already.

What is at ground level on the new development? Not a facetious question, I've not really seen any detailed description. It's some kind of music school? What is at the base of the tower?

Yeah good question. So you have the eight level office building at the northern edge of the site with a double height gallery space at ground level. Then you have the two level song school, which I assume will house the St Georges Cathedral choir who are really very good. Between these two buildings are open space that goes through from Pier St to St Georges Cathedral which gets it's spire and some other changes according to the original plans.

I'm in two minds because the quality of the buildings in the redevelopment looks really high and the redevelopment will complement Cathedral Square really well. BUT, the Playhouse has the potential to become one of those really cool old theatres where you see the gig's that are always amazing and intimate. The chances of it happening though are so remote considering it's ownership, renovation costs and running costs that I think redevelopment is the better option.
