Venn Gallery (+ Shop/Bar/Cafe) opens next week. Good location on Queens St near 1907, could be worth a look.

I will be very disappointed if there isn't at least one Venn Diagram up on the wall.

It can show the small overlap between the circles ''Karl'', ''Barry'' and ''Liquor License Applications''

WA deserves more arts funding

28-April-11 by Edited announcement

The Chamber of Arts and Culture WA has called for more equitable Federal Government investment in Western Australia's cultural sector.

Chamber Chair Sam Walsh said the succession of multi-billion dollar resources projects in the State served to mask the ongoing struggle for Western Australia's arts organisations to continue their vital contribution to the State's social development.

"Ensuring West Australians have access to the arts - whether it is music, ballet, opera, theatre, film or the visual arts - is critical to the social "health" of our State. Providing cultural experiences and opportunities is an essential part of making our State and capital city an attractive and interesting place to live, work and visit," Mr Walsh said.

The Chamber has identified next month's Federal Budget as one of the earliest opportunities to further promote fair and sustainable arts funding.

"While the Commonwealth has talked about a tight budgetary environment and spending restraint, the Chamber believes there is still scope through mechanisms such as the Australia Council to provide a fairer distribution of funding to WA's peak performing arts companies," Mr Walsh said.

"Based on population alone, Western Australia should receive 10% of total funding channelled through the Council; however, our State has consistently fallen short of this mark. Figures from the Australia Council for the Arts Annual Report 2009/10 indicate that across all art forms, WA's share is $9.8 million less than our State should reasonably expect using population as the determining criteria."

Mr Walsh said in 2009-10, WA received the least amount of arts funding of the mainland states. South Australia, for example, racked up almost $3 million dollars more than WA - despite having 600,000 less people.

"At the same time WA is the largest net contributor to the Commonwealth, which derived around $38 billion in revenue from the State in 2008-9."

Mr Walsh said it was important to point out that the arts in Western Australia had not become dependent on government handouts and many organisations had achieved box office growth and increasing levels of sponsorship and donations.

"There is no lack of talent in the State. Shaun Tan recently won an Oscar for his short film, while in 2010 young artists Tamryn Gill and Pilar Mata Dupont won the $100,000 Basil Sellers Art Prize. But it is a fact of life that Federal money, along with State Government contributions, is part of the funding jigsaw needed to sustain a healthy cultural sector. All we want is our fair share," he said.

This is interesting. Would be nice to watch at NB Piazza.

A Midsummer Nights Dream Live Broadcast

For the first time in Australia, on 21 May 2011, Black Swan State Theatre Company’s live stage performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the State Theatre Centre of WA in Perth will be broadcast in real time to audiences across regional Western Australia. A live broadcast has never been done in by an Australian state theatre company before this.

With a huge cast of 17 WA actors, and directed by Artistic Director Kate Cherry, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is one of Shakespeare’s most loved comedies, as it weaves stories of love and longing, magic and mayhem together into a perennial audience favourite.

To create the opportunity for regional audiences to share and experience the best of live theatre, Black Swan will broadcast a live performance of this Shakespearean classic from the new State Theatre Centre of WA to audiences in six regional and rural centres – as well as two metropolitan venues, Armadale and Northbridge Piazza. The broadcast will also be available on the Westlink network.

This is an opportunity for thousands of regional WA citizens who normally cannot attend Black Swan performances because of distance or financial constraints to share a state-wide ‘live’ experience within their own community. Thanks to support from Lotterywest, admission to the broadcasts at all venues is free.

No other state theatre company in Australia has put on a live broadcast like this project.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be broadcast live onto screens at the following venues on Saturday 21 May from 7.00pm:

* Esperance: Esperance Civic Centre; bookings on 9083 1566
* Kalgoorlie: Goldfields Arts Centre; bookings on 9088 6900 or www.goldfieldsartscentre.com.au
* Geraldton: Queens Park Theatre; bookings on 9956 6662
* Mandurah: Mandurah Performing Arts Centre; bookings on 9550 3900 or www.manpac.com.au
* Bunbury: Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre; bookings on 1300 661 272 or www.bunburyentertainment.com
* Merredin: Cummins Theatre; bookings on 9041 3295
* Armadale: Armadale Town Hall; bookings on 9399 0410
* Northbridge: Northbridge Piazza; no bookings necessary

Watched it when it was on last year. Absolutely classic. Karl Pilkington is either an idiot or a genius.
