Akt II complete university building in Masdar
Client: Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company Architect: Foster + Partners MEP Consultant: Piers Heath Principal Contractor: Al Ahmadiah - Hip Hing JV Masdar is a 640 ha new city in the desert of Abu Dhabi masterplanned by Foster + Partners. It is intended to become carbon neutral over time - as its low use of carbon fuel-generated energy amortises the inevitable carbon consumed in constructing it. The first phase is a new university called the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology which has links to world famous institutions such as MIT and Imperial College London. The university will be solely concerned with research into the generation of clean energy, with the aim of placing Abu Dhabi at the forefront of this emerging technology. The project itself incorporates some of the latest thinking in terms of sustainable design. Alongside the targets for carbon use, the main influence on the structure was an ambitious construction programme. Work started on site three months after AKT II's appointment. Their design responded to these allowing foundations to be installed before the design of the upper floors was complete and the whole £225 million project to be completed within in 18 months of their appointment. The engineering challenges extended to establishing a grid system which eliminates transfer structures while accommodating vertical programme of car park, PRT movement routes, laboratories, residential and offices. Other challenges included the sustainable use of materials which resulted in the latest research and development in concrete construction being adopted for the project. AKT II instigated the adoption of a cement replacement product, pulverised fuel ash which has replaced 70 % of the cement GGBS, which has replaced 70 % of the cement content of the concrete used in the project. worldarchitecturenews.com ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Mafraq Dialysis Center / Stantec
Architects: Stantec Location: Abu Dhabi,United Arab Emirates Design Team: Erik Hokanson, AIA, Tamer Fawzi, Reham Hussein, Abhishek Gupta, Wafaa Sleiman Project Year: 2012 Project Area: 75,000 sq ft Photographs: Courtesy of Stantec The Mafraq Dialysis Center featuring sixty eight dialysis treatment stations serves a critical need for the Middle Region of Abu Dhabi. Designed as the first of a series of dialysis treatment centers for SEHA , Abu Dhabi Health Services Company, the project stands as a symbol to the commitment of world class healthcare by the government of Abu Dhabi. Using this platform the Stantec design team was inspired to create a dynamic architectural prototype that could easily adapt to site and programmatic circumstance. The patient centric design flips the conventional arrangement of the dialysis treatment beds from an inward orientation to an outward orientation allowing patient views to the landscape and access to natural light. Private dialysis stations with therapeutic chairs and flat screen televisions with feature movie programming allow for respectful care in a comfortable environment. The treatment “pods” each consisting of sixteen (16) back to back patient beds are positioned on each side of the building core and keep the floor plan efficient and functionally fit to purpose. This decentralization of the typically statistic nurse station configuration requires mobile nurse units that allow better visibility and attention to patients. Articulated and layered façade elements combine with horizontal site walls to create an integrated dialogue between landscape and building. This interaction is further reinforced by the corner condition of the site which provided the opportunity to open the building form and create a welcoming entrance for visitors and patients. Glass facades incorporate a dynamic steel supported perforated metal sunscreen that veils the building from the harsh Middle Eastern sun while privacy to patients undergoing treatment. SEHA’s new state of the art Mafraq Dialysis Center facility represents the new international standard for renal dialysis treatment, preventative education and dialysis training. Flagship development designed by Goettsch Partners provides contemporary office space
Architecture firm Goettsch Partners (GP) has recently designed the flagship commercial development for Al Hilal Bank in the heart of Abu Dhabi's Al Maryah Island. The new speculative office tower is located in the Emirate's developing new central business district, accessible from the surrounding services. The 24-storey tower includes office and retail space, with 1,000 parking spaces for tenants and visitors. "The new tower creates a distinctive architectural form, which is expected in the region," said James Goettsch, FAIA, president of Goettsch Partners. "At the same time, the building offers very efficient floor plates that are atypical in the local market." Challenged to define a distinctive image that would reflect the bank's unique brand while also setting an international aesthetic, GP designed a bold, contemporary tower that shifts in massing as it rises. The podium contains a retail banking facility as well as a dramatic three-story transparent lobby to the north, with pedestrian arcades on the east and west. Three cubical masses sit atop the podium, stacked like shifted blocks. The unique design is optimally efficient, created using column-free spaces within. These forms derive their interest from a 'push-and-pull' effect at the corners. In addition, the building's façade changes at the created voids to accentuate the shifted aesthetic. The elegantly designed façade consists of an aluminum-and-glass curtain wall system with glass and notched metal-spandrel elements which give it a timeless aesthetic. In addition there are vertical glass fins that enhance the building's verticality while also providing shading. The new tower offers maximum transparency, with floor-to-ceiling glass providing spectacular views for occupants while significantly increasing the amount of natural daylight inside. The project is designed and scheduled to receive an Estidama 1 Pearl rating. Source: www.worldarchitecturenews.com ![]() ![]()

Stimulating school completes in Abu Dhabi
Officially opened in September 2011, the Al Bateen School is an inspirational learning facility on an island site in the centre of Abu Dhabi. Brought on as lead consultants, architects and engineers Dewan developed the concept designs of Singapore-based CPG Consultants PTE LTD over a short period of 60 days. Totalling 2,680 sq m, the completed education building is a highly environmentally-friendly school comprising of classrooms, sports areas, creative arts rooms, drama studios, home economic laboratories, modern science rooms and technology facilities. There are also various other amenities such as an indoor swimming pool, multi-purpose hall, a performance auditorium and outdoor sport facilities. Student capacity is 1,200 from Y7-Y13. The teaching and recreation rooms are centered on an expansive atrium which offers a sheltered space for social interaction or quiet contemplation. A paneled glass canopy forms a partially-closed roof through which light penetrates, with shading provided by swathes of material. Source: www.worldarchitecturenews.com ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Masterplan for 3.5million sqm CBD approved by Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council
Concepts drawn up by the Abu Dhabi-based studio at Broadway Malyan for the masterplanning of Al Maryah Island - formerly Sowwah Island - have been approved by Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council. The immense 3.5million sq m plans conceptualise a new Central Business District (CBD) for Abu Dhabi and present an outline for the entire 144-hectare island which is built on a 14.25m-high podium, encircled by a 5.4km waterside promenade. The first phase of the scheme is already under construction. The Goettsch Partners-designed Sowwah Square will create a thriving business hub for the region in an architecturally-impressive expression. The development has been designed to be highly sustainable and is centred on four main buildings offering 180,000 sq m of flexible office space with large floor plates and column-free interiors. The remaining land on Al Maryah Island has been split into twelve portions which are currently open to offers, with a number of clients in negotiation with Mubadala Real Estate & Infrastructure which is overseeing this multi-billion pound investment. Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange has already secured a central plot in Sowwah Square. Broadway Malyan’s masterplan creates an overarching concept for this remaining space, encompassing residential, retail, hospitality and commercial units interspersed with much-needed green open spaces. The 3.5million sq m mixed-use development is linked to neighbouring urban regions by a complex infrastructure system including a multi-tiered road network and new transit system. There are also plans for air-conditioned above- and below-ground pedestrian channels linked to the transport network and an external waterside promenade which wraps around the entire perimeter of the island. Speaking on the approval of the concept plans, James Rayner, Director at Broadway Malyan explains: “The green light for the concept masterplan is a major milestone in the creation of this huge new mixed-use development, with the success testament to close partnering with the client and the world-class skills, expertise and experience of our global masterplanning experts, as well as their understanding of critical factors such as local climate and culture.” Broadway Malyan is providing the masterplanning, public realm, architecture and landscape design, and sustainability consultancy for the project.
