some of those buildings look Western as they were built by welathy Chinese merchants returning from abroad, and developed imported styles ('showing off' their worldiness), notably off Portuguese trade routes, which they amalgamated with local Chinese vernacular. It's also known as 'Chinese baroque'. Those villages and fort-houses are now UNESCO World Heritage sites.
A similar example in theory are the Shanghai shikumen housing from the 1900-1920s, an amalgamation of British (brick, rowhomes) and Eastern styles (sloping roofs, courtyards, shuttered windows): ![]() art deco versions from the 1930s |

Should be a wood carving, which is quite sturdy and can withstand the elements with the proper re-paint every now and then. Have never seen them snap off from the forces of nature though. These ornaments are quite huge actually.
