The bridges will connect Umlifaina Island – located near to Reem Island and Saadiyat Island - with Abu Dhabi Island.

Umlifaina Island is a former mangrove area that has been entirely reclaimed into an island. It actually consists of two separated areas.

This is the location: http://wikimapia.org/#lat=24.4888279...8&z=15&l=5&m=b

Next to Reem Island and Mushayrib Island.

This is the bridge which will lead to the destruction of Le meridien hotel (besides beach hotel), yes that's the arriving point. Heard it from Teyseer guys who bid on this project. Also the tendering time was like 3 or 4 months only, but again it is a simple class bridge like the Sowwah island link.

While why not .. however, the link between Reem & Sadiyat would be the right decision at this moment, otherwise normally the upgraded Salam street can take the load of Reem islanders .. having said that the Salam street project is at least 1 year delayed !

Californians design new FNC building

Published 29 January 2011
Abu Dhabi // A Californian architecture firm has been chosen over 14 other major companies to design the Federal National Council’s new building on the capital’s Corniche.

The centrepiece of Ehrlich Architects’ winning design will be its 100m concrete and metal screened dome, visible for miles across the water – especially at night, when it will be illuminated.

But the dome will serve a functional purpose, too, reducing the amount of direct sunlight reaching the main building and creating a “shaded micro-environment while casting Islamic patterns of dappled light onto the white marble Assembly Hall.”

The buildings that will house most of the offices and meeting halls reflect the colours and textures of desert sand, with exteriors recalling local historic buildings.

Thick walls in light colours will provide thermal mass, collecting heat during the day and releasing it at night. Recessed windows and other features will minimise the need for daytime artificial lighting.

The building is expected to achieve a “five pearl” rating in the Estidama Initiative, a sustainable design programme.

Steven Ehrlich, the design principal at Ehrlich Architects, said the complex would “balance Islamic heritage with the UAE’s global contemporary aspirations, where modernity and tradition are in harmonious balance.”

Ehrlich Architects teamed up in the second phase of the competition with the UAE-based Godwin Austen Johnson and landscape architects ValleyCrest Design Group.

The delayed award for the main contract for Umlifaina Bridge may not be awarded until March, according to Abu Dhabi’s Department of Transport.

A spokesperson for the contracts department at the DoT said: “The contract has not yet been finalised. It might take another two months or so. The government wants to take its time.”

The project covers construction of two bridges and three smaller crossings that will connect Umlifaina Island - close to Reem Island and Saadiyat Island with Abu Dhabi.

The deadline for the tender submission on 26 September was extended until mid-October, according to Yasir Al Ani, project manager for the estimated $82million development at the time. The scheduled end-of-year award has been delayed since then. Around 13 contractors are believed to have been invited to bid.

Bridges has been one of the UAE capitals main areas of focus and project delivery in the last year as it continues to improve its infrastructure in line with its 2030 Economic Vision. Last November, the $226million Mafraq Bridge in Abu Dhabi, which was opened this month.

Coordinated by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, and built by Al Jaber Transport and General Contracting, the 27-lane two-way structure aims to improve the efficiency of the existing bridge and enhance traffic flow.

A few days later, the $270million Sheikh Zayed bridge was opened by HH Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain. A project spanning 842m, is the third crossing over the waterway into the island of Abu Dhabi.

It is on the way to Abu dhabi airport while coming from the AUH island.

Also it is right next to New Shaikh Khalifa Stadium which has been postponed for the moment.
