Like in every other city. The whole city can't be flawless, some neighbourhoods are good, some of them are bad.

Some pictures of Riga from above.

49. New district of Skanste was one of the upcoming new districts of Riga during "The Fat years" (as we call the economic boomtime period here). Now the development and many great projects of this area, like in almost all other areas, has stopped.

50. Central part of the centre

I'm turning this thread into new concept. It will be a good old picture every day concept, but there will be some differences:
1) Each week day will be devoted to specific theme (thus I will try to cover Riga in all it's variety and if you are interested in particular cathegory, you will know which day you want to visit this thread).
2) I will post also more than 1 picture a day - but only from 1 particular place (building/street/monument etc.)

Week days will be thematically cathegorized in this way:

Today is monday, so this is the Old Town day:

1. Arhitektūras (Architecture) street.
About 300 m long street close to Dom's square and parliament.

2. Gertrudes street. It is one of the Riga centre streets which stretches several kilometres through perimetrical 19/20th century built-up with beautiful architecture. In total, Riga historical centre (together with Grizinkalns district) has some 10 square kilometres of area, 4.4 of them are included in UNESCO World heritage list.

3. German ambassador residence in Mežaparks. Mežaparks (Forest Park) is a historical suburb of Riga which started to develop in the beginning of 20th Century. It is a district of wealthies, many posh and large villas hides there in pine forest - in total, the number of houses in Mezaparks exceeds 400. Nowadays, the historical architecture is supplemented by new modern style appartment houses. There are several ambassador residences as well, and this one - Germany ambassador residence - located on the street with appropriate name - Hamburgas (Hamburg) street.

4. "Chocolate" building. Nice modern accent on Hospitāļu and Zirņu street corner (distant north-east part of the centre). The building looks quite impressive in reality.

5. View over Riga centre from St Peter's church (panorama of about 180 degrees). Click on it to see larger size.

6. Something of Asian style in Riga, in Kronvalda park. Maybe it's related to the fact that one of Riga friendship cities is Kobe (Japan), but don't know.

7.
Today is Sunday and we have to visit some church. This one is Orthodox church and it is located on "Moscow" suburb (or "Maskachka" as we call it in sleng), Kalna street. There are several more Orthodox churches in Riga as large as this one and many more smaller ones.

8. Riga Old Town has got new view and potential place for new square. Just several months ago one of the biggest eyesores of Riga stood here - Soviet wreck building, which shocked everyone of city's tourists. Before municipal elections in this June, that wreck was finally demolished. It didn't help the previous Riga mayor party to get elected this time though..

9. Skolas street view. Small wooden buildings appearing here and there between masonry built-up is probably unique characteristic of Riga - is there any other city like this?
