Unanswered question from old thread.

One thing, how it makes 'urban areas' population instead of whole shire population? Well like Lismore, Byron and Ballina, they are all count whole area instead of city/town urban areas. I kept looking up on ABs and theres nothing for 2008???? I think Lismore got up to 35,000, Byron 14,500 and Ballina 28,000.

it was answered, you ignored it.

Urban Centres or Localities are a defintion calculated from the census and used in a few publications. It's calculated by looking at density; once the density of an area drops too low that zone is not considered as a contiguous part of the city it is near. But almost all documents that include information use Statistical Local Area, which is equavilant to the shire population.

Stats for 2008 are located in: Regional Population Growth, Australia. go look.

Lismore was mentioned because it is a decent enough size/density to be included in the urban areas list (aka Population Estimates by Statistical District):

So that list would mean places of 25,000 and up? Not surprised about Byron in there because it is 10,000 short. Wonder why Ballina isnt in there? Im pretty sure Lennox Head is part of Ballina urban area. So that would equal over 25,000.

I've often wondered that - there are places I'm sure would have to be 25,000 and over. Places like Busselton and Albany in WA, Alice Springs in NT, maybe Foster-Tuncurry, Taree and Ballina in NSW etc.

Despite this, the Statistical Districts included in the list have been the same for a long time now. If the list was limited to a certain number of places such as "Top 50 Statistical Districts" or even "Top 40" it would make sense, but the list contains 43 locations?

Anyway, here is the qualifying definition for inclusion:

STATISTICAL DISTRICT
A Statistical District (SDist) is an Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) defined area which bounds a large predominantly urban area outside the Capital City Statistical Divisions. A Statistical District consists of one or more urban centres in close proximity to each other, with a total population of 25,000 or more. The boundaries of Statistical Districts are defined to contain the anticipated urban spread of the area for a period of at least twenty years.

Pretty much well over 25,000 for Ballina-Lennox population. Last time i saw Lennox Head was 7,300ish for June 2008 and for Ballina over 21,000. That makes it 28,300 approximately and easily places in top 50 in local statistical population for 2008 update.

Oh wait dont forget that Ballina Heights area aswell, its also part of Ballina urban area too. Ballina Heights probably over 600.

Showed that Lennox Head just over 6,000 in 2001 and grew around 5.3% annually. It got Ballina urban centre nearly 17,000 and grows 0.7%. Ballina Heights is nonexistant.

So what would mean for June 2008?
Ballina Urban would be over 20,000 in additional of Ballina Heights, North Lakes, new housing areas in West Ballina, Rainforest Ridge, new highrises in CBD and Grandview and plenty new housing areas in East Ballina. For Lennox Head area would easily over 8,000 last year. Still proves that to my earlier details above before the edit of this post!

Tweed is actually over 86,000 for last year Broadie.

One thing i find it so funny, huge difference between LGA and Statistical division/urban centre. In wiki, Orange have same population (under statistical division 2008) to ABS have it LGA! So what this means for Orange? No one lives in rural out there?

It takes a long time to add 100,000 when you are only growing on average at around 0.9%pa. Over the past few years Adelaide has increased its pace, now growing at around 13,000 a year. That's up from an increase of only 5,500 from 2003-2004.

This year Melbournes population stands at just over 3,910,000.
And Melbournes population increases 54,000 people each year, so in another 2 years.

Is the population of the centeral coast between Sydney and Newcastle counted as part of Newcastle, or is a group of sperate cities. I thought that it all came under one city council?

Out of interest what is the population of the central coast region?
