But whilst there is explosive population growth, any environmental policies implemented will struggle to make headway don't you think? ..and I don't see this as a reason not to make the effort now by the way.

I was actually agreeing with you . I was obtusely anticipating the response on here (which Lightness kindly and subsequently obliged me in).

Environmentalism as a genetic trait . At best it's a throwback.

The chances are two environmentalists would give birth to raging rednecks.

Too true.

Why does Dick Smith-style xenophobia disguised as environmentalism always manage to hi-jack any discussion about population around the time census figures are released?

It is so tedious reading the whinges of how poor wittwe Austwawia just can't cope with all these boatfulls (sic) of invading foreigners who 'took 'er jobs'. So much noise for so little factual information.

Why can't we just accept that land and population share should be fairly distributed globally and with 5% or whatever it is of the world's land we are not pulling our weight with 0.023% or whatever it is of the world's population?

For those that speak of Australia needing to contribute towards decreasing global population: we are one of the most urbanized nations on Earth. Urbanization is shown to decrease birth rates by offering education and employment opportunities to women that don't exist in rural areas where they are shut in the family home and bred to death. Australia's best contribution to lowering global population growth is therefore increasing immigration from rural areas in overpopulated countries. Turning what would have been generations of "breeders" into people very likely to have fewer or even no kids at all, potentially reducing global population by the millions, tens of millions or even hundreds of millions over the long term.

Great idea mate. In the same way we can save endangered animals in Australia. For example we can replace the Tasmanian devil with dogs, there's a surplus of stay dogs in Athens at the moment I heard. The koala can be replaced by squirrels, which exists in too large a number in south east England. Those bleeding whales that everyone is going on about can be replaced by Scottish farmed salmon.

Those effing Amazonian tribes that Angelina Jolie keeps saying are threatened by logging can simply be substituted by Chinese.

Can someone elaborate for me here? Australia's population according to the most recent census resuls (released today) is 21.5 million. According to Wikipedia, the 2012 population of Australia is 22,939,444. Can someone clarify? Beyond confused.

Not to mention this:

"Brisbane recorded the largest jump in the number of people in a particular local government area - with its population topping 1 million for the first time."

I'm sorry but hasn't the population of Brisbane been 1 million for at least 10-15 years?

Wondering why Ballina and Lismore statistics is so identical to 2006 release?

EDIT: No way for the Lismore and Ballina LGA's grew 1000 each in past 5 years? The 2011 results of population release said Ballina is nearly 45,000 and Lismore at 47,000. So why the census does not even count as enough to the population growth? It seems the world's slowest growth ever on record?

I believe this census release is well under counted?

Probably. Especially considering an article claiming the vanishing of "300,000 people from the Australian population in the 2011 census". That's a ridiculous loss of people. It seems to me this is an error on behalf of the ABS.

I just wow........so many cities and towns across the country is well before the underestimation line of the release of population results back in March and last year. Townsville does seem going to 200,000 but now it stuck at 175,000. I am going to disappoint Australia more now. We are well under populated country. BIG FAIL indeed. Brisbane doesn't seem reached 2million at all according to that census either.

Ill get my US citizenship instead.....

Are you implying that there are people on here that fit that category, or is it just a general rant? Do any environmental viewpoints have any merit at all in your view?

And what basis do you have for implying that Dick Smith’s agenda isn’t entirely straightforward? A genuine question, I don’t know much about him.
