I didn't say it was the Yangzte. I said it's about to BECOME the Yangzte. Your Geography is ok, but your English needs a little work.

Ancient city wall relics found on site. Read this: http://mp.weixin.qq.com/s?__biz=MzAx...installed=0#rd

After nearly half a year, we resumed our journals with somehow a blue tone. It's about our deep concern of a recently discovered Chongqing City Wall ruins.

On Jun 10, 2015, Chongqing Morning Post reported a discovery of the first Song Dynasty city wall ruins near Chaotianmen. The major discoveries were:

1) The ruins were located between Chaotianmen and Xishuimen, approximately 140 meters long
2) After about 1 month of research, Chongqing Cultural Heritage Research Institute discovered city wall ruins from Song Dynasty and Ming Dynasty
3) Width of Song Dynasty city wall ruins were almost 10 meters, with the texture of rocks covering soil
4) Ming Dynasty city wall ruins were on outer layers, covering Song Dynasty city wall ruins

Based on public information, these city wall ruins have significant meaning to study the history of Chongqing's urban development. Especially the ruins of Song Dynasty. Before this discovery, the oldest ruins in urban Chongqing were the Donghuaguan (a Taoist temple), originated from Yuan Dynasty. Moreover, the Song Dynasty city wall was a part of the national defense system in eastern Sichuan Basin, which witnessed a critical turn of history.

Sadly, in recent two months, volunteers found that the ruins were under destruction. Excavators were working on the ruins, and the latter had no proper protection. Except for the section under archeological research, the remaining part of the ruins are under destructive threat by the urban construction.

On Aug 22, we visited the ruins again. The construction company has set obstruction so we couldn't access the site. We only could watch from nearby buildings and dock. What we saw had no difference from the recent reports.

Chongqing municipal government has passed a guideline to protect local cultural heritages. Under this guideline, any discovered city wall ruins must be protected and shall be free of destruction from modern urbanization.

According to this guideline and the critical importance of the discovered city wall ruins, we appeal to the developer and the construction company to immediately stop any destruction towards the ruins, and protect the ruins under the supervision of cultural heritage experts and officials. We believe that well-protect city wall ruins would be valuable treasures to the developer and the people of Chongqing.

Lastly, we would like to express our admiration and appreciation to our fellow colleagues, the volunteers for cultural heritage protection, who work tirelessly to save our city's history and civilization.

Why would they destroy such an ancient relic? Even if they are building buildings here, I don't think that's OK

can't it be moved? wouldn't be the first time to cut something in pieces and move it to a different place. this is a prime location in the very central part of the city pretty much, would be a shame if a small ancient ruin (that wasn't even unearthed since recently) would block further development. This project however is really big, so until the situation is sorted the other towers could still start rising already.

What brings you to that conclusion?

I imagine the construction will go on, at most with a slight delay for archaeologists to go in and investigate. Pressure will be great enough to force the relocation of these ruins, which unfortunately might incur some damage in the process.
Worst case scenario: the contractors demolish the ruins without giving a ****.
Best case scenario: ruins are carefully excavated and removed from the sight.

I think it extremely unlikely this project will either be cancelled or modified to incorporate the ruins as part of the master plan.

How is the wall located in reference to the future towers? Can't they incorporate the city-wall in some form into the project?

I'm not sure, but chances are, that would be expensive and impractical.

But would add immense character to a world city like Chongqing!

Local government could (should!) reach out a helping hand towards the developers here. Financial compensations, streamlining changes in paperwork etc...

I saw those pictures, but I found it hard to see if the wall will cut through some towers or not.

This is my attempt to locate the wall. But I'm not sure if I got it right. Maybe the wall is closer to, or on that street.

Please forgive me that I vandalized the pictures, but it helped me to visualize where the wall is located.

hope you are right, would be cool to have the complex not disturbed and be able to look up from the wall and have the sky deck right above you

Yes, you're right. Actually from these photos taken on construction site you can notice T1 hasn't started yet.

The layout for T1~T6 is like this:

______T3N_T4N______
T1_T2_T3S_T4S_T5_T6

From these three photos below, some research or protection work on the ancient wall relics has taken on site, and they are separated from the construction site. Mind the green fence and people in tomato colour jacket.

OOoh goodie! Looks like it's really going ahead now.

So is that area in the foreground the ruins of the ancient city wall?
