Perth wheel to close BEATRICE THOMAS, The West Australian April 12, 2010, 10:25 am The Perth Observation Wheel will stop turning on May 2 after operators and the City of Perth were unable to reach an agreement on its future. Perth Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi said this morning that World Tourist Attractions were seeking a five-year lease extension at the foreshore, which was not possible with the late 2011/early 2012 starting date flagged for the Perth waterfront redevelopment. Ms Scaffidi said operators were also keen to move to Barrack Square with a wheel about 5m smaller in diameter. However the council ruled it out because the site was not big enough. Ms Scaffidi said other possible sites such as the Supreme Court Gardens and Langley Park were also deemed unsuitable. "They need to justify the expense and guarantee a five-year lease period, which of course we can't give given the fact that we've got the announcement confirmed by the Premier now that (the waterfront redevelopment) will commence just after CHOGM," she said. "We can't find another location that’s as amenable as the current one." Ms Scaffidi said it was a disappointing outcome. "It's disappointing because I love it," she said. "People will notice that it's gone and it will be bare without it and I am extremely disappointed at its departure. "I've ridden on it a few times myself and of course I love the lights, the lights are a huge addition to the city skyline." Ms Scaffidi said she could see the wheel from her office at Council House and believed it had been popular. "Traders around Barrack Square say it's really enhanced business for them," she said. "It's been a good thing for the city." The decision to close the wheel comes a month after the City of Perth resolved to change the zoning of the land it is sitting on from road reserve to crown reserve after World Tourist Attractions indicated it wanted to stay on the site for two more years. Ms Scaffidi said the original two-year agreement expired in January. COMMENTS Stephen30 minutes agoReport Abuse Well what a waste of money that was.............. Why can't they spend money on the river.....that would justify money well spent, the river is still touted as a tourist attraction and it stinks and is polluted to the max. ![]() Reply 0Thumbs UpThumbs Down0Shane2 minutes agoReport Abuse Perth - dullsville. Lots of comments on TheWest.com about the 'waste of money' that was the Ferris Wheel.
Ummmm, it was privately owned and operated yeh? No precious tax-payer (or rate-payer) dollars were spent AFAIK. So it didn't turn a profit, so what? That's private enterprise for ya. Shit happens.

how the fuck is it classic perth??
some of the comments ive read about the wheel make me want to punch people it is something set up by a private company and they are making a commercial decision to not continue with it. that happens every day in pretty much every city in the world i dare say so many dumb fucks making uninformed comments about the wheel wasting taxpayers money is more classic perth than the wheel itself p.s - rant is not really directed at you, ive just heard dumb comments all morning

All that effort wasted. The Wheel was destined to fail.
Time for foreshore redevelopment now. Let hope all the organizers involved get all of this right, and not cause one massive fuck up. Would be great to see a well designed foreshore development completed, not a half arsed one. |

Ment classic Perth as in we get something, we dont like it, we end up liking it, then it gets taken away from us, unfortunately due to my fail, I cant come up with another example, but im sure its happened before, but I cant think of anything.

i think a lot of it comes down to tha fact that they prolly didn't get enough people to go on that thing to make it viable... yet it's rent free etc etc but i suppose it has to do more than attempt to break-even?
we should build our own southern star wheel 100x as big!!! *t-i-c*

WAToday are reporting that the council spent $10 million on the wheel. What could they be referring to?
