The fact that this is so Hong Kong oriented and it's in Thailand, goes to show where all the tourists come from.

Movie stars are known for jetting off to exotic locations around the world for private getaways where they can indulge in almost any amenity a person could dream. This area of the CNX Movie World development will offer a choice of lodging opportunities that will give residents and visitors a taste of that experience right here in Chiang Mai.

Bora Bora Floating Villas

Wooden walkways delicately tiptoe over the water leading guests to the front door of these beautifully crafted wooden villas perched above the crystal clear blue water below. Large windows face out onto the Lagoon giving each villa a great view of the peaceful water that stretches out before them. The high thatched roofs and windows that can prop open help to keep the entire building breezy and comfortable. Open-air patios are also available, a perfect place to watch the sunset or share a drink with friends.

Many of the villas feature a short staircase leading to a boat ramp below where residents can take a brief swim or climb on-board their boat to take a leisurely trip to another part of the CNX Movie World development where they might enjoy an early dinner, a late-night concert or float in the Lagoon to watch the nighttime entertainment.

Caribbean Hotel

The opulent colonial architecture of the Caribbean provides inspiration for this one-of-a-kind hotel that features a sparkling, palm-tree shaded pool with its own thatched-roof bar. This is the perfect place to quietly lie in the warm sun or frolic in the cool refreshing waters. For those looking for a more natural escape, the hotel also features easy access to its own private beach, an experience that cannot be found anywhere else in Chiang Mai.

Maldives Floating Villas

Pointed thatch roofs supported by wood-inlayed columns sit perched high above the water in this exotic resort. Wooden walkways lead guests to their private rooms high above the water and wooden stairs allow for a quick escape down to a waiting boat docked below. Huge curtained openings surround the rooms allowing for peaceful views of the watery scene outside or to let in the gentle night breezes. The carved wooden shutters can then be closed to give the room a private and cozy feeling for a special night.

Design Royalty

Chiang Mai’s Creative Kingdom grew from humble beginnings into a multinational firm, its portfolio running the gamut of artistic endeavors. Neda Phinyawatana finds out more from the company’s ‘terrible twins’

They started off as colleagues, working as architects at the world renowned Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo Architects, Planner and Consultants – or WAT&G. From there, Mr Eduardo A Robles and Mr Thanu Boonyawatana joined forces to build Creative Kingdom, a hidden gem in the heart of Chiang Mai, into a world class company.

Creative Kingdom specializes in master planning, architecture, theme and leisure park development, hotels and resorts, two and three dimensional computer graphics and architectural animations. Recently it ventured into film production.

“Our headquarters is in Los Angeles and we have offices in Johannesburg, Manila, Dubai, Beijing, China and of course here in Chiang Mai, “explains Eduardo. “I am originally from Mexico but grew up in the States. Thanu and I met while we were both working on the project, ‘The Lost City’, which is a theme park in the South Africa, back when we were both at WAT&G. We had amazing teamwork and strong sense of connection and chemistry. If we were pitching on a project individually, and without any prior discussion on the pitch that contains the same ideas and concepts. It is a strange connection I tell you. It is like I am the right brain and Thanu is the left brain. Our clients used to even call us the ‘Terrible Twins’. So in 1997, we decided to start something for our own.”

Eduardo says they started with only a handful of people in their Chiang Mai office, and now they have over 300 employees.

“It is faith that brought us here. Chiang Mai was never actually in our plan even thought Thanu is from Thailand. We travel a great deal for out work and I think that is was getting to be a bit much for our Thai renders. So, that is how our Chiang Mai office was born. Since then, Chiang Mai has also been my home”, he says with a smile.

“I still live in Bangkok but I do spend a great deal of time up here and traveling to our various offices,” adds Thanu. “Our work takes us around the globe, from snow covered terrain to the most barren desserts. When we travel, we see things and that’s where our ideas and inspirations come from.

Eduardo hands me a hardcover coffee table book, “Kings of Design”, which contains the company’s portfolio. I peruse its contents silently for a few minutes before asking them how they manage to maintain such a low and humble profile when their achievements span the entire world and include some incredibly high profile projects.

“It takes 10 years to build a company, but it can take just days to destroy it. We just want to make sure that we are solid, strong and ready before getting to that point,” says Eduardo. Their past works include: Madinat Jumeirah Resort, Park Hyatt, ‘The World’ and The Palm Jumeirah in Dubai; Table Bay Hotel in Cape Town; and the Nickelodean Theme Park in North Carolina, in the US.

“The most challenging part of our job is to find the next big idea and do it with speed,” explains Eduardo. “For us, a good design must also be a successful design meaning that out client must like it and it has to make sense in terms of business.”

Thanu adds: “We, architects and designers, must learn to never fall in love with our work. We should stand by the principle that if we work for a client, it must solely be for the client’s interests and benefits, and not ours. After all, it is the client who owns the property and it will be his/her investment which he/she will live after it is completed”.

his leads to my next questing: how did they make the transition from architecture into computer animation and even film production?

“Well, we live in a fast changing world,” says Eduardo. “We must grow and adapt with it in order to survive. As the world is witnessing an economic crisis, we need to diversify our business in order to say afloat. This is where computer animation came in. It so happened that one day, our graphic designers said that they can draw cartoons. So, we said, ‘Great! Let’s do something.’ We then started to create cartoons, and now we are developing geographical settings for online games. The virtual world has created a new dimension for architecture. In this world, there are no boundaries, and we are free to fantasize about what we cannot do in the real world.”

As architects, Thanu says the duo already possessed the necessary skills such as creative arts and dimensional landscapes. “We then basically translated these skills into our vision and flaunt them through our team’s drawings,” he explains. “After that, film was the natural next step.”

Eduardo says hey are fortunate to have a presence in LA, with its giant film industry. “We have been exposed to the business and know that we can bring that industry to this side of the world,” he says. “We are currently developing a 30 rai film studio in San Kamphaeng district. By 2014, six studios of varying sizes will be available to serve different scales of movie production facilities to attract over 30 productions from all over the world. We will turn Chiang Mai into ‘Chiang Mai Wood.’”

By this time, I have toured their entire office which covers some seven floors of the Kad Suan Kaew complex and ask the “terrible twins” the secret to their success.

“I always think of tomorrow, and sometimes, I even miss today,” says Eduardo. “Success to me does not have a finish line, it goes on forever. The most important thing is that you challenge yourself and enjoy the race.”

“You must always have an aim and look ahead,” adds Thanu. “Be passionate and give energy to what you are doing as well as inspire others. And of course, all of this has to make money as well!”

Will Chiang Mai become Hollywood East?

THE NATION Published on June 18, 2010

Creative Kingdom, a US-based film production firm, yesterday kicked off construction of the Bt20-billion Chiang Mai Movie Town Project, or CNXWood, saying they aim to be a regional hub of film-making.

The investment Creative Kingdom and its partners is putting into Chiang Mai would have to be five times larger to work in China, Robles said.

The growth of the movie business and game and animation work will gradually increase, and Thailand can play a leading role in the sector, he added.

The project was announced in 2009 as using land in Mae Rim district. However, some parcels had what ownership problems so the group relocated the project to San Kamphaeng district.

Major foreign investors from South Africa, the Philippines, the Middle East and Korea hold 49 per cent of the group. But some local investors have changed as a result of the relocation. Some land owners have joined the project.

The group says the entire development will be worth US$617 million (Bt20 billion) on 1,500 square rai. It will start the first phrase this year on 200 square rai, which will consist mainly of studios and residences. It expects to spend $70 million for the beginning step.

White House Studio Complex, in the part the first phase of the project, will include state of the art studios with a full range of sound stages and post-production facilities. The group expects the development to attract representative offices from the major Hollywood studios and believe it will eventually become a thriving nexus of the international film-making market in Southeast Asia. The complex is set to be complete by the end of 2012.

According to Robles, the whole project should finish over the next seven years. Additional development will be studios, world class shops, a theme park, a university, residences and a convention hall and hotel with beach and entertainment facilities. The entire development is expected to require over 4,000 jobs both local and foreigners.

Chiang Mai will also become a game production town by providing a high-tech infrastructure that will attract the world's major IT and game production companies to set up facilities in CNXWood.

The Board of Investment has already approved the three-studio plan. This approval is now in the process for other parts to cover wider aspects of the overall project.

US Ambassador Eric John said he welcomed the work that Creative Kingdom was doing to create business opportunities and jobs for northern Thailand.

The plan includes the development of a residential estate to accommodate the working community.

The Chiang Mai film production company Living Films, Southeast Asia's leading media provider to the Hollywood studios; Swedish game production company Mindark, producers of the Entropia Universe MMORPG game; American game producers Digital Scryers; and Dabok, a Korean TV and film production company have already expressed interest in becoming some of the first companies to establish offices at CNXWood.
