why are they being demolished?

I think the south-western corridor has very good chances for more 40-storey blocks....like Tiong Bahru perhaps

Ang Mo Kio to be upgraded into 'seamless town', says PM
Besides estate facelift, he also announces new community care network to help needy, older folk

By Laurel Teo

ANG MO KIO is the latest in a series of housing estates getting a major facelift, with two batches of flats picked for lift and interim upgrading programmes.

Other improvements include connecting the parks, building more covered walkways, and linking different parts of Ang Mo Kio together, to create a 'seamless town'.

The plans were unveiled last night by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong during a Chinese New Year dinner celebration in his Teck Ghee ward.

Teck Ghee, which is part of the Ang Mo Kio GRC, will get lifts upgraded in two precincts, if at least three-quarters of residents vote for it. They are blocks 461 to 468 and 470 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, as well as blocks 334 to 337 in Ang Mo Kio Ave 1.

In addition to new lifts, blocks 334 to 337 - under the interim upgrading programme which uses government funds to improve common areas - will get features such as covered linkways, outdoor shelters and ramps.

PM Lee also announced a five-year renewal plan for the whole of Ang Mo Kio, involving creating park and walkway links to make the town 'seamless'.

Even private estates will get a share. 'We will encourage and support the neighbourhood committees in their efforts to improve further the public facilities in their areas,' said Mr Lee.

He also confirmed that works for a new retail mall at the junction of Ang Mo Kio avenues 3 and 8 are on track to be completed by next year.

Jointly developed by the Singapore Labour Foundation, NTUC Income and FairPrice, the $340-million mall will feature NTUC FairPrice's first hyper-mart, an eight-screen multiplex cinema and other shops.

The mall will also house a new bus interchange linked to the Ang Mo Kio MRT station, and be the 'new focal point' of the town, said Mr Lee.

The refurbished town centre next to the mall will also be ready by mid-year, featuring wider walkways, new storefronts and amenities. These changes will be shown in an exhibition on Feb 25 as well as in a booklet.

Estate renewal plans have been used as campaign platforms by the ruling People's Action Party in previous elections, and have now sparked talk of an impending election.

Since October, Aljunied, Sembawang, Jalan Besar, East Coast and Tampines town councils have announced mega makeover plans, costing between $160 million and $570 million each.

Besides the physical improvements, Mr Lee also announced a new community care network of grassroots leaders and volunteers in Ang Mo Kio providing social help to needy, older residents in one- and two-room flats.

Teck Ghee resident Mimi Hoo, 60, who runs an air-conditioning business, approves of the estate plans: 'After upgrading, our estate will look very beautiful, like condominiums,' she said.

The flats at Kallang look quite nice. Cannot tell if it is condo or HDB.

HDB cluster under construction next to Fernvale LRT station (Sengkang line)

Seen from nearby block 407B:

A new shopping arcade just opened next to the construction site:

The food court is nice, Chatelain recommends the noodle soups stall :-)

There's something very weird about Fernvale, it feels very much like a countryside village, but with metropolitan features such as a train line (navigating through the jungle o_O ) and highrise buildings.

A pic illustrating the contrast:

Huh... I think light radiating from the housing block will have whitened the whole picture long before you actually get to see a trail of light in this case... It's not like heavy traffic on those rails !
