moor street is a failed bus mall, hence the 2 lanes of traffic. It's function now is not what it was designed to be when it was built.

I don't think the hotel is on hold. The office phase on the other end of CPG site is on hold though.

BUMP!

Looks what's just been resubmitted for full planning:

Quote:
Application Number 2010/02883/PA

Application Type Full Planning

Site Address Plot 4, City Park Gate land at Moor Street Queensway Masshouse Lane and Albert Street Eastside Birmingham

Proposal Erection of hotel (Use Class C1) comprising of 204 rooms and conference facilities, with a maximum height of 16 floor levels
Different architect but looks similar - some changes though.

I guess this means this might happen quickly.

Slight changes? THEY'VE COMPLETELY GOT RID OF THE TOWER!

They've reduced the size of the hotel to 175 rooms because of changes in the hotel market (watch out for the bullshit now!).

Some changes? Massive changes - and not for the better. Biggest alteration is the removal of the inclining floors and raked roof. I was never keen on the view from Masshouse Lane, but now it's a complete mess. As for the balconied rooms that would have looked out over City Park (or what would have been City Park) most of them seem to have been got rid of in favour of a stairwell. Most rooms will now look out over Island House or across to Masshouse.

I was hoping this plot would be able to go ahead without having to be remasterplanned because of HS2. Now I'm praying I'm wrong.

I think this looks better. The sloping roof didn't work for me, especially as it was inactive (i.e. you would only see the roof - it didn't have glazing or balconies. The previous design was too fussy and didn't relate well to Island House - this redresses the balance (only through necessity rather than considerate design though.

Here's some comparisons (I know they changed it a bit after comments though) - thanks to Erebus and feltip for the pics:

I think this is designed better in its relation to its area but is to short. The aesthetic design is horrid and Moor St still looks s***.

Edit: i forgot to say it looks like a car park

The facade detailing looks pretty good and the cladding is a glossy granite/granite-effect ceramic rainscreen in black and off-white

They go to a fair amount of detail in the design statement.

Good to see developers giving Birmingham's built environment the boost it needs. A world class building for a world class city.

For those that dont know where this hotel is going, here is a photo I took from the Albert street car park roof opposite the site.

Much better without the sloping section. I too would have liked a couple of more floors on top.

In all fairness, Bio, those old proposals weren't the ones that were approved. They made some major design amendments following CABE's comments. I can't find any decent sized pictures and ended up using tiny thumbnails in the Development Summary thread...

Saying that, it was still shit.
