Those gaps really do look odd.

I reckon the surface car park is just there until they can get hold of the tyre place and use the two sites for another big build. Don't like the advertising hoarding though, but again I think it's just temporary with the surface car park.

Oddly, I was talking to someone who works at the Uni tonight and asked what they thought of this new addition to the campus.

"It looks unfinshed," was the response.

This is truly a ghastly addition to the city's townscape.

Personally I really like it. Silver, not grey. Smooth corners. Neat and tidy design. Few MSCP's look better.

I'd like it without the gaps. It looks wrong.

If you look at the design intent it seems that gaps were supposed to be applied to the main body of the wall, ie:

BAR - GAP - BAR - GAP...

The gaps were supposed to be expanded at these points to break up the repetition.. but it seems that all the regular gaps have been filled with bars, and where the gaps were supposed to be emphasised, it now just gives the impression that there are some bits missing

Yes, that's exactly what I thought. The widening gaps create a sort of "wave" effect.

They have kind of achieved that effect, just not to the scale the illustrations show.

I imagine it would have been very windy/wet inside if the design had gone as planned.

The rear of the finished car park in all its glory. The main building should be ready for Autumn next year....

I thought the engineering centre had been delayed?

The gaps are for ventilation - otherwise you would need fans.

Nice btw

The scene above looks like somewhere in Spain - very innovative stuff!

Yes, but the renderings show gaps between all metal slats, not only a few of them.

If it was Spain the waste ground would be littered with bags of rubbish, washing machines, old TVs and discarded building materials.

The original renderings give the impression the gaps are there by design due to the recurring pattern, the finished product looks like it's unfinished because they appear to be more random.

Wonder why the didn't just go with the original design - I can't imagine wind loads would have been substantial enough to change it and some of the bigger gaps look slightly dangerous insofar as you could get through the gaps if so so desired.

Some site prep underway behind the library. Vinci Construction signs are now up as well.

It's not obvious from this angle but the large hole on the right does have concrete set in it.

Work continues on site. A tower crane was being erected this morning but this photo was taken yesterday.

There's a planning application to change this. I believe one wing is going to be made higher. I don't really know that area. Is this on the site that used to be student halls? (River House?)

It's the old Gulson hospital site.
