The State government has called upon the Railways to take steps to set up an operating centre for trains and wagon repair/overhaul workshop at Nemom.

A ‘wish list’ prepared by the government recently had pointed out that 12.14 hectares of land is available with the Railways, near the Nemom railway station on the Thiruvananthapuram-Nagercoil-Kanyakumari line.

As many as 1,600 railway coaches are attached to the Thiruvananthapuram Central railway station. These coaches are to be taken for overhaul, once a year, to Chennai. On an average, 130 coaches are taken for overhaul every month. There is considerable delay in getting back the coaches.

The State government had pointed out that it will be highly economical and convenient if the Railways could set up a workshop at Nemom with a minimum capacity to overhaul 100 coaches a month. Moreover, the operating centre will reduce the congestion at the Central Station here and trains bound for Ernakulam can commence from Nemom.

The government had also pointed out the need for commencing Main Line Electrical Multiple Units (MEMU) connecting major towns in the State to ease the congestion on the roads and for the benefit of short-distance commuters.

The stretches proposed for commencing MEMU include Neyyattinkara-Kollam, Kollam-Kottayam, Kollam-Alappuzha, Alappuzha- Ernakulam, Ernakulam-Thrissur and Thirssur- Palakkad.

It had been pointed out that only Rs.7 crore was provided in the Railway budget 2007-08 for setting up inspection and stabling facilities for MEMU units in Kollam.

On the gauge conversion front, it had been pointed out that the work on the Kollam-Punalur section was in an advanced stage. The government had also laid stress on the need to expedite the work. The work was expected to be over in June. It is now clear that it would take at east six more months.

The Punalur-Shencottai section, which is the leftover portion in the Madurai route, should also be taken up on a priority basis, the ‘wish list’ said. It is an important link from Southern Kerala to Central Tamil Nadu, it said.
Gud.. News to know GOVernment keen on MEMU

I dont know how MEMU can be run in single line sections between Kollam and Ernakulam as mentioned in the news report. If Railways intended to run MEMU from Kollam to Ekm as per the pasted news clipping and if I were to believe the same, then a MEMU shed may have come in Ernakulam or Thrissur and not Kollam!!

MEMU shed is established at Kollam primarily for running suburban services towards Thiruvananthapuram
, let us be clear about it first.

Some years later, when doubling works are completed, MEMU run may be extended to Ernakulam on north and to Nagercoil on South. This is due to the fact that they are allowed to run maximum of 150km. But imagine the plight of passengers travelling by MEMU for 150km without any toilets.

Actually, there are some funds are allocated for the survey of Feroke-Angadippuram railway line touching Karipur in last years railway budget.

‘Do not backtrack from train extension decision’
Monday, Jul 27, 2009

KANNUR: The Malabar Rail Users’ Association (MRUA) has urged the Railway Ministry not to revoke the decision to extend the Yashwantpur-Mangalore Express train to Kannur as announced in the Railway Budget.

The Railway Budget announcement was now put on hold following opposition from a local MP in Karnataka and some youth organisations there.

The MRUA would launch agitation if the Railway backtracked from its Budget announcement, he added.

Longest railway bridge in Kochi

Sat, Jul 18

Kochi, Jul 18 (PTI) Come November and people in Kochi can take pride in their city having the longest railway bridge in the country, cutting across an island over the Vembanad lake. The 4.62 km-long Vallarpadam bridge will beat the current record for the longest rail bridge held by the Nehru Setu Bridge near Dehri on river Sone in Bihar by more than a kilometre.

The total cost of the Rail link for the Vallarpadam project, including the railway station and goods yard at Edappally near here was Rs 245.67 crore, but had shot up to Rs 297.10 crore due to escalation of steel prices, he said.

Kerala's Railway Needs: New Railway Lines

Kerala's Govt and MPs should work hard to ensure the fulfillment of following new Railway Lines:

1. Angamali - Kalady - Perumbavur - Muvattupuzha - Thodupuzha - Palai - Ponkunnam - Kanjirappally - Erumeli - Azhutha

3. Edappally - North Paravur - Vadakkekkara - Kodungallur - Kaippamangalam - Manalur - Guruvayur - Kadikkad - Ponnani - Tirur (this will help us to decongest EKM-TCR-Shoranur-Kozhikode sector)

5. Takazhi - Edathua - Tiruvalla - Kumbanad - Kozhencherry - Elanthur - Pathanamthitta - Konni - Koodal - Pathanapuram - Punalur - Anchal - Kadakkal - Palod - Nedumangad - Thiruvananthapuram

6. Kottayam - Pambadi - Cheruvalli - Erumeli

8. Muvattupuzha - Kothamangalam - Neriyamangalam - Adimali - Munnar-Theni-Bodinayakanur-Madurai

9. Kollengode - Nenmara - Vadakkacheri - Peechi - Pattikkad - Thrissur

10. Kozhikode - Kunnamangalam - Mavoor - Areecode - Nilambur - Nilambur Road - Etakkara - Meppadi - Kalpatta - Sulthan Batheri - Gudalur - Teppakkadau - Gundlupet - Hadnur - Hura - Nanjangud

11. Thalassery - Koothuparamba - Mattannur - Chavasseri - Iritti - Periya - Mananthavady - Kartikulam - Veerarajendrapet - Madikeri - Kushalnagar - Hunsur - Mysore

You missed a very important need for new trains to run, dude.

i.e. To expedite the existing proposal of enhancing coach care facility at Tvm/Nemom for maintenance and parking.

Otherwise you dont have any more parking space and coach care facility available in Kerala for more new trains!!

What is finally proposed in this year railway budget is Ankamali-Erumeli-Pathanapuram-Punalur-Tvm for survey. Line to Azutha from Erumeli seems discarded ,may be due to forest land related issues.

Chengannur-Pamba and kottayam-Erumeli lines were strongly objected by locals for parting their land and railways finally dropped these lines from their list long back itself.

Punalur - Anchal - Kadakkal - Palod - Nedumangad - Thiruvananthapuram and Nedumangad - Vidura - Bonacaud - Papanasam - Ambasamudram may be worth trying for in future.

Edapally-Guruvayur line is thickly populated coastal area and getting land even for NH17 road widening has been herculean task till now. Land aquisition for road widening seems to have reached nowhere in this sector. Hence, very little chance of realising this line unless the locals co-operate miraculously in future.

Gurvayur-Tirur alignment is opposed by section of IUML leaders and they seem to have "ordered" E Ahmed'ji to re-align & move the line to Tirunavaya instead of Tirur which is more in length. Let us wait and see whether the new alignment gets through by Railways.

Ernakulam-Muvattupuzha-Madurai line survey is announced this budget.

E Ahmed'ji has already announced that Nilambur-Mysore new line is his priority and will strive to bring it.That is good news. The last surveyed alignment seems to be Nilambur-Gudalur-Sulthan Bathery-Nanjangud though I prefer the line goes through Kalpetta.

Kanhangad-Panathur line survey is announced this budget.

A new railway zone is what all the Kerala MPs and the state govt. is pitching for. Let us wait and see whether it materialises.

Presently there are only two divisions Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad. Hence, I think you should say proposed new divisions at Kozhikode and Ernakulam, whether you want both of them or only one, as they dont exist now.

Beam,

Yes TVM and Palakkad are already divisions. We need two more new divisions - EKM and Kozhikode for Zonal status.

There are some rules that there is a minimum km of railway line for a Division and Zone. Hence there is a need for more railway lines. The above 12 railway lines should be completed to achieve zonal status.

- Riva, are you a compulsive poster or what? At least study the facts before you post your opinion/suggestion. Try and understand the differences between Railway divisions and zones.

I sense that you are just racking up posts to create some sort of an impression. No hassles with that, but please add value when you do. Thanks in advance!
