All the TNSTC divisions have posted a profit in the month of October with Madurai standing no 1 in the list and Villupuram last in the list.

The main reason was that they have increased the fare by nearest Rupee. ie They have incresed Re 1 and 50ps in all the basic fares. This was done silently without any prior information.

2,700 new buses to be procured
Special Correspondent CHENNAI: Nearly 2,700 new buses will be procured in four months for strengthening the public transport system in the State. According to the government’s plan, 3,000 buses will be purchased. While 1,600 are being purchased under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the remaining fall under the government’s routine scheme of purchase of vehicles. Till now, 302 buses have already been delivered. Of the vehicles being purchased under the JNNURM, 1,000, including 100 Volvo buses, are meant for the Metropolitan Transport Corporation and 300 each for the Coimbatore and Madurai divisions of the State Transport Corporation. The government’s routine scheme of the bus purchase is funded by a loan of Rs.99 crore from the Tamil Nadu Transport Development Finance Corporation and the government’s contribution to share capital of the transport corporations, a government official says. http://www.hindu.com/2009/11/26/stor...2661050800.htm

Government Pressure
Hi friends,
I heard from some of my friends that the Government of India has pressurized the Tamilnadu Govt to increase the fares of SETC buses and hence, increase the quality and service. Being the second largest network, they have no proper quality and maintenance. The rates are very cheap. eg: Puducherry-Banglore SETC Bus: Rate Rs 220. Time taken 7.5 hrs. KSRTC Bus: Rate Rs 390 - Rajahamsa and Rs 530 for Airavat. Time taken 6.5 hrs |

Good response to new bus service
Staff Reporter ERODE: Cool is the response to the Erode-Coimbatore air-conditioned bus service the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has launched. “The response is encouraging and there is good occupancy, particularly on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays,” says a TNSTC source. The occupancy is almost 100 per cent on the three days and slightly less on other days. The Corporation, which launched the air-conditioned service in the first week of October this year, runs four services a day 7.15 a.m., 7.45 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3.30 p.m. Occupancy The source concedes that at present the occupancy is not as much as expected because of winter. “Though good the occupancy is not as much as we would like it to be, which is because the climate is cool. The Corporation expects it to increase after Pongal.” The source says the Corporation will soon introduce new buses in the district. The chassis have arrived and body building is going on. http://www.hindu.com/2009/12/18/stor...1853800300.htm

ARIYALUR: About 3,000 minibuses would be operated soon in the State and district collectors have been empowered to sanction new routes for minibuses, Transport Minister K. N. Nehru has said. Speaking at a function to mark the inauguration of buses on new routes, distribution of free colour television sets, free house site pattas and old age pension at T. Palur on Thursday, Mr. Nehru said the State government despite the steep hike in price of diesel has not hiked bus fares which were among the lowest in the country. New buses Recently, 3,000 new buses have been acquired for the State Transport Corporations and of these 1,500 would be operated in the rural areas. Four of these buses were to be operated in T. Palur union. Routes extended Over the last three years, 2,000 bus routes have been extended, he said. S. S. Sivashankar, D. Amaramurthy, MLAs, R. Pitchai, District Revenue Officer, and other officials spoke. |

CHENNAI: Private bus operators at the Omni bus terminus in Koyambedu had a field day fleecing travellers on Thursday as people who failed to get seats or berths on trains arrived there in droves. With the railways unable to meet the demand for seats or berths, people heading to their homes or elsewhere on Thursday evening to utilise an extended weekend came in flocks to the Omni bus stand, desperate to get seats on buses to Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil, Tuticorin, Tiruchi, Salem, Madurai and Bangalore. About 80 special buses were operated by Omni bus operators to meet the rush, apart from the regular daily service of 220 buses. Even so, several illegal bus operators lured passengers to popular destinations in the southern part of the state by bringing in unauthorised buses and charging fares several times higher than normal. "A private operator charged me Rs 1,200 to go to Coimbatore," said K Prasanna who could not get a train ticket. There were no protests because travellers were more than happy to get a seat. ![]() "Several illegal operators brought in buses and boarded passengers outside the private bus terminal in Koyembedu after 10pm," said a private bus operator's staff. ![]() "The menace of illegal operators overcharging passengers is there every year. We have alerted the police and tried to prevent them from doing so. But we are unable to stop them from operating," said Afsal, an officebearer of the TN Omni Bus Owners Association. At the Central and Egmore railway stations, Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTE) had a tough time handling the crowd because several waitlisted passengers were pressing them to issue tickets, said a railway official. Southern Railway was flooded with requests from VIPs to clear tickets under the emergency quota. The demand for confirmed seats or berths were so high that the railways had to attach an additional AC two-tier coach to the Chennai-Mangalore Mail and an additional sleeper coach to the Chennai-Mangalore Express. But no extra coach was added to the Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram Mail. "We attached additional coaches to clear the crowd. Still, many people could not travel; the demand was so high," said a railway official. On Friday, the rush was a little less at the Central and Egmore railway stations and at Koyambedu's Chennai Moufussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) and the Omni bus terminus. |
