Market shows true style
The Standard
Wednesday, July 06, 2011

Fans of architecture fought hard to preserve the Wan Chai Market in Queen's Road East from redevelopment and were partly successful. The facade and part of the front, with its distinctive curved sun-shade ledges, will live on as part of a new development.

During that debate, people described the architectural style as Bauhaus. But a recent paper by Lee Ho Yin and Lynne DiStefano of Hong Kong University puts the record straight. The style is streamline moderne. If you've never heard of it before, don't worry - you're not alone.

However, we all know it. Streamline moderne is a late 1930s form of art deco (the style that reminds us of swinging Shanghai). The authors of the paper include pictures of a radio, a calendar and a camera using the same curved, lined style. It is still seen around the world in older facilities like bus stations.

The University Lodge at the University of Hong Kong and the Star Ferry terminal in Tsim Sha Tsui are also in that style.

If there is one word for the style, it would be "aerodynamic."

So what is Bauhaus? The authors, members of the faculty of architecture, have found several examples here in Hong Kong, especially at Kadoorie Hill in Kowloon. It is boxy looking, with sharp corners and windows divided into grids. The Bridges Street market is Bauhaus, and City Hall is strongly influenced by it.

Bernard Charnwut Chan, chairman of the Antiquities Advisory Board, sees culture from all perspectives.

Synopsis : Yesterday, as workers installed wood panels to secure a piece of broken glass on an upper floor, the glass shattered, sending debris to the ground. 4 cars were hit but no pedestrians were injured. The building is under construction and is undergoing interior decorations. Nobody has been arrested so far.
