GMR Infrastructure to take up work on BOT basis Four-laning from Malkapuram to Nandigama HYDERABAD: The work on the much-delayed widening of Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway No.9 will begin before the end of the year with the National Highways Authority of India awarding the project to GMR group. The 181- km long road, connecting the State capital to the coastal districts, was sanctioned under the National Highways Development Programme- Phase III around five years ago. But the four-laning of arterial road with high density traffic ran into legal hurdles with several bidders vying for it and challenging the selection process. The Rs.1,200 crore four- laning project would be taken up from 40th km near Malkapuram to 221 km mark at Nandigama and the LoI was given to the GMR Infrastructure Ltd. which won the project on a BOT basis through international competitive bidding, according to Engineer-in-Chief, R&B (NH), K.Siva Reddy. The GMR will be given two-month time to enter into an agreement and six months to achieve financial closure. Thereafter the project would have to be completed in two-and-a-half years. While the government would not make any investment, the BOT operator would get concession period of 25 years. However, as the NH-9 is a high revenue -earning stretch, the government would get 32 per cent share in toll collection once the new road is ready for commercial operation, Mr. Reddy said. The road to be built as per world-class specifications would cut down travel time and improve safety levels besides connecting two major economic hubs of State- Hyderabad and Vijayawada. It would also be vital link in facilitating Kolkata – Bangalore traffic movement. Kurnool-Kadapa road Another important road work, the 190 km Kurnool-Kadapa stretch widening on NH-18 also to be taken up on BOT basis was awarded to KMC group. The Rs. 1,740 crore project with a concession period of 23 years would get 39 per cent as viability gap funding from the Centre. Both the projects would be reverted back to the government after the concession period. unquote some hope at last on the most dangerous road in the country at present hopefully GMR will do excellent job as with other project.but it would have been good if they have gone for 6 way staright away |

![]() Of approx. 1100 hectares of land to be acquired, approx. 650 hectares already acquired, remaining work in progress. Facing some trouble as usual regarding compensating the land losers. A senior level committee has been formed to look into this matter. Should hand over the land to GMR Punj Lloyd consortium by Jan 2010. R&B engineer feels difficult to complete the road project by 2012. |

I recently travelled on this highway on my trip to India and to my home town and I see some activity on this project. They have cut several trees and looks like GMR will be able to complete this project on time.

That is good to hear. My only concern is why GMR has not yet achieved financial closure (meaning tying up of funds from banks, promoter etc.). They were awarded the project in May 2009 and they had to achieve financial closure in 6 months. I'm assuming NHAI hasn't yet acquired 80% of the land for the work to start.

Here you go my friend....financial closure achieved...
![]() GMR tried their best to complete all projects in time and hope this highway is no exception.... http://www.dnaindia.com/money/report...ighway_1351755 GMR Infrastructure has tied up funds for its Rs 2,190 crore Hyderabad-Vijayawada highway project, said a senior official from the firm. The debt component of the 181 km project is about Rs1,700 crore. “IDBI Bank has underwritten the loan and we have sent the sanction letter and draft documents to NHAI (National Highways Authority of India),” said the official requesting anonymity. The interest rate on the loan is 10.75% and IDBI is looking into syndication of the loan, he said. GMR is also close to tying up funds its other road project, a 30 km stretch outside Chennai. “ICICI Bank is underwriting that loan and we should achieve closure in about 15 days,” the official said. The project is worth Rs 1,200 crore. He said the size of the debt component was being worked out. DNA Money had on November 28 reported that GMR would arrange funds for both the build-operate-transfer (BOT) projects by February. The Hyderabad project is toll-based and GMR bagged it in May last. The firm won the annuity-based Chennai road project the following month. The projects have a concession period of 25 and 20 years, respectively. GMR is one of the largest highway developers in the country and currently operates six BOT projects totalling a length of 421 km. Asked of the fallout of the new NHAI clause, the official said the finer details were not clear yet. “We are still looking at it and if need be, the NHBA (National Highway Builders Association) will take it up with the NHAI,” he said. The clause states that a developer will not be able to bid for NHAI projects if it has three or more highways pending financial closure. Quote:

HYDERABAD: The long-awaited four/six-laning of Hyderabad-Vijayawada section of NH 9 will be taken up after the foundation stone is laid by Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways R.P.N. Singh at Narketpally in Nalgonda district on Sunday. The Union Minister will be accompanied by Chief Minister K. Rosaiah and Union Minister of State for Urban Development S. Jaipal Reddy. Mr. Rosaiah said in a press release that once four/six-laning work is completed, it would fulfil long cherished dream of people of the Eastern part of the State to have faster access to the capital. The Chief Minister on Saturday discussed NH 9 project with Minister for Roads & Buildings Galla Aruna Kumari and Minister for IT Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and other officials. This Highway mostly runs through the Nalgonda district and would immensely benefit the people of Nalgonda by providing faster access to Hyderabad, indirect employment to many people and development of industries and last but not the least, the drastic reduction in the number of accidents. Mr. Rosaiah was explained that other advantages with the implementation of the project would be substantial decrease in vehicle operating costs like reduced travel time between Hyderabad and Vijayawada from six to four hours. There are six bypasses through Narketpally, Nakrekal, Kodad, Akupamula, Sher Mohammed Peta and Navabpet. The Chief Minister will also lay foundation stone for 132/33 KV sub-station at Darsimcherla of Nereducherla mandal in Nalgonda. |

Land prices may have went up because of this project !!.
Happy to know that this project will be completed by October 2012. I was speaking with my father yesterday and he was saying that the land prices went up by more than 150% recently in Nalgonda. Didn't have a clue why this happened ?. Now I think it must be this project that must have increased the demand for land in Nalgonda town .

Babji, thanks for the updates. I have travelled on this highway ever since I was a child. We almost travel on NH-9 for 82 KM from HYD to NLG . This is definitely a boon to NLG, VJW people.
