You do have a reputation for being particularly generous with benefits compared with big continental countries, but I bet the biggest reason is your language and large already existing immigrant community.

How to pay supplement for IntercityDirect and ride over HSL between Schiphol and Rotterdam:

I have a question: is NS planning on buying Velaro D trains to increase services to Germany?

In a parallel universe, maybe. I would put my hopes on DB for better services to Germany.

Ideally, it would order Velaro D trains to operate services to Belgium as well.

Any old train will do, really. As long as it's frequent and reliable, which we've not seen for several years now.

Rotterdam Centraal prepares for grand opening
10 JAN, 2014

Rotterdam’s brand new international rail station, Rotterdam Centraal, is to open on March 13, concluding a seven-year project to improve the Netherlands high-speed connection to the rest of Europe.

The new station is covered by a huge 250-metre-wide roof and will house platforms for national rail services, the city’s metro system and high-speed services from France and Belgium.

Rotterdam is the first stop for many international high-speed services arriving in Holland and with passenger numbers expected to triple between now and 2025, the decision was taken to demolish the old station, designed by architect of Sybold Ravesteyn, and start again.

The opening will provide the opportunity for a double celebration, with 2014 also being the 175th birthday of the Dutch railway network.

Thalys has reported a 46.3% increase in passengers between the Netherlands and Belgium since the withdrawal of the Fyra trains.

Anyone know what the material is on the front of the roof arch? It almost looks like some kind of gold foil, but I doubt that'd communicate an acceptable level of quality in person.

If only Fyra could increase service frequency to 1 train-pair per hour between Amsterdam C and Brussel Zuid at least.

Finally some news in the V250-drama.

AB will take back the trains and will pay NS 125.000.000€ . They have agreed to refrain from any further financial claims regarding damages and delays.
AB will repair the the trains and find a new customer for them, when the trains are resold the dutch railways can receive a max of 21.000.000€ per sold train.

I think the NS should be happy with this arrangement, hopefully we can put a end to this disgraceful story.

This is bad. I hoped AnsaldoBreda would repair the trains and then after commissioning them NS would take them back.

Per sold train a piece of the sale price will be paid to NS with a maximum of € 21 million for all trains combined.

Could become a good bargain for some private operator in fact... The selling price won't be that high.

Private operators can't afford unreliable trains. Not even if they were free...

Sure, the question is whether the designed is structurally flawed or whether the problems had other causes, then it is just a question of finding a good fit. If e.g. the snow is the problem, you can sell it somewhere, where there is no snow...

As every single train was different, you can be pretty sure the trains are structurally inadequate.

According to what is now known (the executive summary of Mott McDonald's report was leaked) the overall designs are sound, but the execution is poor in many places. The investigators found a disconnect between designs and how the trains were built, in other words: quality control was very lacking. There are other problems: the vehicle end structure is not designed well, there are severe flaws around the battery systems and there is rust forming.

However, Mott McDonald did not believe that the problems were unfixable, but it would require a considerable amount of time (17 months minimum) given that a capable manufacturer would perform the repairs. Given AnsaldoBreda's performance so far this is laughable of course.

I don't think we will ever see the V250 fleet carrying passengers again.

It seems like a lots of space to put some photovoltaic panels on. I mean the roof. Did they think about it? I can't see it there.

Overall the station looks nice, will have to go there soon.

The dark parts are solar panels.
