‘Queen Elizabeth’ makes maiden port of call at KK
Posted on March 8, 2011, Tuesday http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=99635 ![]() CRUISE AROUND THE WORLD: Queen Elizabeth, Cunard line’s newest luxury liner docks at the Sabah Port yesterday. KOTA KINABALU: Cunard’s newest luxury liner, the ‘Queen Elizabeth’, made her maiden port of call here yesterday. The 294-metre long liner docked at the Sabah Port’s harbour at 8am, bringing with her 2,000 guests from 30 countries and 1,000 crew members. According to the ship’s captain, Julian Burgess, their last stop was Australia. “We were in Melbourne, Sydney and Freemantle before arriving here,” he said, adding that they have been at sea for five and a half days before arriving in the state capital. The ‘Queen Elizabeth’ was launched in October last year and made its maiden journey in January — a 103-day round-the-world cruise that originated from Southampton, England. “From Southampton, we went to the US and made four port of calls there. “We proceeded to Curasol, Panama, Mexico, Samoa, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia, before arriving here,” said Burgess. “It is very exciting since every port we call at is always the ship’s maiden.” Burgess added that the ship called at Kota Kinabalu so that their guests could see Sabah. “They will go for excursion today and the captain is taking some time off to play golf,” he joked. He said from Kota Kinabalu, they will make a two-day journey to Hong Kong where they will stop over for two days. Then they will head for Vietnam, Singapore, India, Oman, Dubai, Jordan, Egypt, Italy, Portugal and several other ports before heading for home to Southampton. Burgess informed that the liner was nearly 91,000 tonnes in weight. “It has beautiful interior features having 10 restaurants and cafes, a two-storey library as well as two outdoor swimming pools.” “We also have a special theatre where we have loads of big shows and entertainments which are better than some West End shows in New York and London. “We also have on top of the ship a sports area where our guests can play table tennis, lawn balls and croquet. So it is very English.” The ‘Queen Elizabeth’ left the port at 5pm yesterday.

Malaysian ports register positive growth
Wednesday April 27, 2011 http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...313&sec=nation PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian ports are reporting an increase in cargo movement compared with previous years. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said Malaysian ports handled 4,785,818 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) from January to March this year, an increase of 12.7% from 4,246,395 TEUs during the same period last year. All the ports also recorded positive returns on TEUs handled in the first quarter, he said yesterday. “As a whole, all ports experienced positive growth between 2% and 18%, with the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) recording the highest,” Kong said in a statement read by his deputy Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri. Transshipment – cargo passing through Malaysian ports – also grew by 513,795 TEUs or 19% while imports increased by 32,221 TEUs or 4%. Kong said British-based container trade publisher Containerisation International reported that Port Klang and PTP in Johor retained their positions among the world’s top 20 ports last year. “Port Klang and PTP have successfully retained their positions at number 13 and 17 respectively from 2009,” he said. Kong also said that safety must be inculcated as a core value both on and off the job, in order to prevent injuries and fatalities at the workplace and on the road. “Make safety a corporate performance indicator, empower employees to stop unsafe work on the spot and reward them suitably. “Encourage them to develop their own safety plan to include their loved ones,” he said in his speech at the ExxonMobil Contractors and Employees Safety Award ceremony here yesterday. Nine contractor companies received Gold Awards for clocking over 100,000 work hours without any injuries.

by Ronnie Teo. Posted on April 29, 2011, Friday http://www.theborneopost.com/?p=126976 KUCHING: The wholly-owned subsidiaries of Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (Bintulu Port) are expected to benefit from potential new cargo coming their way after seeing improvement in its results for Financial Year (FY) 2010. The subsidiaries, namely Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd (BPSB) and Biport Bulkers Sdn Bhd (Biport Bulkers), saw an improvement in terms of cargo output thanks to the recovery of the economy last year, noted the chief executive officer (CEO) of Bintulu Port, Dato’ Mior Ahmad Baiti. “The impact of the economic recovery in 2010, particularly the domestic economy, has indeed contributed to the improvement of the overall performance of BPSB,” said the CEO during a press conference following the group’s Annual General Meeting in Kuching yesterday. He noted that BPSB’s cargo throughput, in particular, had increased by 5.7 per cent from 38.4 million tonnes in 2009 to 40.6 million tonnes in 2010. In the highlight was liquefied natural gas (LNG) which remained the major contributor of its cargo throughput by 57.64 per cent, followed by containerised cargo at 10.3 per cent, added Mior. The group’s total revenue in 2010 was RM454.95 million compared with RM435.9 million the year before, which was an increase of 3.6 per cent. Revenue from the group’s port and bulking services increased by RM12.2 million and RM3.7 million respectively, due to the increase in throughput. “We are targeting an annual growth of four to five per cent, up to 2015,” Mior revealed. “This is not factoring in potential new cargo which we might receive.” He was referring to the potential new cargo coming in from the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE). In fact, Bintulu Port was currently in discussions with Press Metal Bhd (Press Metal) on ways to handle and move the latter’s products. Press Metal was currently constructing a plant in Samalaju Industrial Park within SCORE. When asked on major capital expenditure (capex) spent this year, Mior revealed that Bintulu Port spent RM75 million for two new key cranes and eight new Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes which it expected to receive by 2012. Speaking on future prospects, Mior affirmed that Bintulu Port would reduce its dependency on LNG from its current level to 60 per cent in the next couple of years. “For this purpose, we will continue to attract traffic, enhance capacities and capabilities, improve cost and fund management and develop new businesses,” he outlined. “At the same time, the group will also reposition itself to serve SCORE in terms of provision of port services and facilities including terminal operation and management.” He highlighted specific focus would be given to the development of the container sector, bulk cargo and palm oil as well as the oil and gas sectors. “Several related projects have been identified for future development, such as an oil and gas terminal, the development of 1,000 metre general cargo wharf, storage yards and sheds as well as the re-development of a general cargo wharf for container operation.” Quote:

Bintulu Port posts RM54.9m Q1 pre-tax
Published: 2011/05/26 http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...cle/index_html KUALA LUMPUR: Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd's pre-tax profit for the first quarter ended March 31, 2011 rose to RM54.89 million from RM53.81 million in the same quarter last year. The group’s operating revenue increased by RM4.10 million (3.48 per cent) from RM117.86 million to RM121.96 million, it said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia today. Revenue generated from port services was RM116.44 million with the revenue from the handling of LNG vessel calls and cargo contributing RM95.84 million (78.58 per cent) towards the total operating revenue, it said. Its bulking services contributed RM5.52 million (4.52 per cent) towards the total operating revenue. In 2011, the handling of LNG vessel calls and cargoes would still be Bintulu Port's most important revenue contributor, the company said. It added the bulking operation was also expected to contribute positively towards revenue growth. Other cargoes that were expected to contribute positively towards revenue were bulk fertiliser, palm oil, palm kernel and alumina. - Bernama

RM351m job to deepen Penang port channel back on course
By Sharanjit Singh Published: 2011/06/28 http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_New...fotte/Article/ GEORGE TOWN: The RM351 million project to deepen the north channel of the Penang Port is back on track, Penang Port Sdn Bhd managing director Ahmad Ibnihajar said. He said this following consultations with the relevant authorities on the urgency of starting work on the project. Ahmad said dredging works are scheduled for completion within the next 18 months and once finished, the channel will be 14.5 metres deep compared with its present depth of 11 metres. "This will enhance Penang Port's competitiveness in sustaining the existing business as well as to capture new business opportunities," he said here yesterday. Ahmad said the capacity building process at Penang Port is in tandem with the port's stated vision of becoming the premier port and logistics chain integrator in the Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand-Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) region as well as the Bay of Bengal. Last month, Ahmad announced that Penang Port stood to lose RM100 million in revenue if work to deepen the north channel of the port does not begin soon. He said many port users were awaiting for the project to take off in order to ink new deals with the port. "We may stand to lose millions if the project to deepen the north channel does not start soon and be completed by 2013," he was quoted as saying. The dredging project was scheduled to have taken off at the end of last year.

Saturday July 16, 2011 http://biz.thestar.com.my/news/story...6&sec=business SIBU: Tanjung Manis Integrated Port (TMP), the only deep-sea port in central Sarawak, is ready to become a global player, said chairman Datuk Sarudu Hoklai. He said work had started for the facility to meet international standards and place it on the map of world ports. He said a government-appointed management team had enhanced the port's operational efficiency by focusing on quality management system as well as the OHSAS 18001 safety standard, the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code and the 5S workplace organisation methodology. On Jan 18, the Marine Department had certified TMP as having complied with the ISPS Code, he said at the launch of the port's new logo as well as its OHSAS 18001 and 5S certifications here. The nearby Tanjung Manis Halal Hub would contribute a great deal to the port's container throughput, Sarudu said. He added that the halal hub would generate over RM10bil in foreign direct investment in 10 to 20 years. “With huge amounts of imports and exports, more operators would request to connect TMP with the world's strategic markets,” he said. To meet the expected rising demand, Sarudu said port facilities were being enhanced, including with the commissioning of two mobile harbour cranes by December. On container handling, he said, the port recorded 2,700 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) as at August 2010 compared with only 475 TEUs a month after it started operations in July 2009. This figure was expected to increase to 3,100 TEUs in August 2011, he said. “It was an outstanding achievement for a port lacking in good road network,” he said. - Bernama

Penang Port to be dredged early next year
Sunday September 11, 2011 http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.as...8453&sec=North GEORGE TOWN: Dredging works to increase the depth of waters at Penang Port is expected to start next year, said Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) chairman Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya. He said the PPSB was now in communication with the Ministry of Transport on the matter. He said it was crucial that the depth of the waters at the port be increased 11m to 14.5m as soon as possible. “We were not able to sign a contract with a company to export limestone through our port due to the shallow waters of the port. “The potential business from that contract was an additional 4mil tonnes of bulk cargo,” he told a press conference at the Tanjung City Marina in Weld Quay yesterday. He was at the marina to attend the Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house organised by PPSB. Also present at the open house were Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas.
