Video of Bucharest from 1961

I recognize the buildings from 1:00 to 1:12. I never thought they would have once looked so good.

They look like this now.

The beautiful wedding-cake style building you see at 1:41 now looks like this.

I like the monument very much, but the path to it smells of neglect...

Latvia, kolhoz "Nākotne" ("Future")

Note the circle shaped carpark. It not only looks good, but the sloped, grassy roof is a great place for kids to play in Winter in the otherwise very flat area.

Artificial slopes in flat areas are a very good idea indeed, especially for winters.

Most monuments of this era are run-down and abandoned. Especially outside of Russia.

@alexandru.mircea
We've been making artificial hills for quite some time now
While there have been many artificial hills for castles since forever, the oldest large hill made for recreation would be the 15 m high Bastejkalns made in 1857. The most famous modern one is Lemberga hūte which was opened in 2005 and gets made bigger every year. Currently it's 52 meters high. In 2013 an artificial hill was completed in Jēkabpils while in 2015 Rīga will complete it's new hill. Perhaps we have the highest artificial hill rate per capita?

But - so I don't go off topic - a small monument from a Soviet nuclear missile base and it's story.

The story: A man was called to the military service. There, withough giving him any materials, he was told that he must build a monument and only then he will be let home from the Soviet army. Luckily, his childhood friend was working in the cement factory. So with the help of him and an army truck it wasn't hard to accuire. But, since they didn't know where else to get the bricks, they simply took apart a carpark's brick wall during the night. And it turned out to be easier as they thought, because apparantly the man, who built that wall, had stolen the cement for himself and simply stacked the bricks

Kaluga was home city of Konstantin Tsiolkovsky (1857-1935), great Russian rocket scientist and pioneer of the astronautic theory. He influenced later rocket scientists throughout Europe, like Sergey Korolyov and Wernher von Braun. State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics named after Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in Kaluga was established with the direct participation of Sergey Korolyov and Yuri Gagarin (who took part in the laying of foundation stone for the building of the future museum on June 13, 1961, i.e. two months after his first human spaceflight).

It's just amazing how they turned a rotting spooky looking building into something so spectacular without even changing the original design.

I guess it was inspired by the Wolkenbügel concept from the 1920s.

I hope one day an architect will decide to build this one too.
