Very nice buildings, but it would be much better if all these air conditioners were either hidden or placed in a more systematic and a less conspicuous way.

Gorgeous. The architecture of socialist countries is exponentially better than most give them credit for.

Very nice structures, but i agree with warden987. Those exterior air conditioners destroy the elegance of those buildings.

Unfortunately most of the high profile commie buildings in Romania are of poor architectural quality. Two exceptions I can think of are the State Circus and the Palace Hall (who has the unfortunate reputation in the world of classical music of having the crappiest acoustics ever), both in Bucharest.

The Palace Hall (1959-60):

Oh and I forgot, the Bucharest metro was outstanding for its time, including from an architectural / design pov.

The creativity of Romanian architects from the commie era can be seen more in buildings of a less importance, now left to decay, such as railway stations, central bus stations, hotels, schools, municipal halls, libraries, sports centres, post offices, even silos, etc.

These all from bellow are from the seaside, which was a bit of an exception and had its own development, allowing a more coherent approach:

Unfortunately, much of what was built then looks like this now:

As for the infamous commie blocks, they are now hated, but many of those built in the first two (up to three) decades looked quite good when they were built. The style was inspired by Western social housing, especially German. There were a few neo-classical projects too.

It has to be said though that the blocks were made out of very poor materials with poor finishing. Even in the case of the better looking ones, the interiour spaces were ill conceived, diminishing the quality of life. They were never maintained, hence the state of decay in which they currently find themselves. Recently a national rehabilitation project concerning commie blocks has been undertaken, with mixed results.
