^I don't like the main (tall) wing of the complex, but it's a good example of a piece of architecture that would be completely revived by a beautiful, fresh glass cladding.

For me the saddest thing is that it looked like a really nice place with those plantings and textured sidewalks. But now it's just a plain highway :/

The French project, Rīga, 1980ies

The first residential high-rises built with monolithic concrete, rather than prefabricated panels. And that's the only reason why they're called French.

Ex Palace of Young Pioneers, now Municipal Youth Centre, Vladivostok, Russia.

Built in 1980.

Main facade

The building outstretches in tiers following the terrain's decline.

Present day:

The fountain is defunct.

This lighthouse-like structure is part of the complex. Dunno what it's here for but looks intriguing.

The exterior needs some revamp but the interiors look neat and well-maintained although the original socialist ethos is meticulously preserved. How have they managed that?

Dom byta*, Ryazan, Russia.

Built in 1973.

*Literally "House of everyday life". It was a staple name in the USSR for a cross between an assortment of household \ consumer services and a shopping center (but unlike Western malls no proper recreation facilities and public catering).

By the way even the word быт - [byt] is hard to define in Eglish, there's no equivalent in this language. So double trouble here)

Pretty marred beyond recognition by a shitty kind of renovation nowadays.

The word "byt" (быт) has the same meaning in Macedonian language too (and other Slavic languages, I guess), the only difference is that we write it as "бит" (bit).

Sorry for the small off topic.

Off topic on

Byt (bit) - from "bytie"(бытие) the existence I guess. From "byt'" (быть) - to be

Off topic off

My point was that most of the visitors on this thread that are from Slavic countries would understand the name of the department store from Ryazan.

You can feel the 90's. Crappy, glass-like renovation Colors, then someone decided to make life even more colorful by placing ads all over concrete-gray "eastern europe".

Reminds me of numerous vivid, bold structures that stood out in the 90s.

Wrocław, Poland - Solpol (built in 1993) Shopping-center
