This is I think my favorite thread in the whole SSC forum.

Yes we all are familiar with the typical boring boxy commi block and that they were built with much space between each other for cars (urbanism for cars instead of people), which makes them unatracitve today, when todays urbanism is focused on pedestrian friendly city building.

But there is a certain thing about socialist architecture/urbanism which cannot be found in the west.

It's much more open towards experiments, new ideas and more creative in terms of facade styling and allignment of the building.

I think one day people in the countries will recognize the historic value of these buildings.

Remember that not 30 years ago nobody wanted to live in these things as they were not in good shape and considered a leftover of old times

Today everybody is crazy about living in a (renovated) building like this.

I think we will witness the same thing with socialist modernist buildings

VSZHD residence, Irkutsk, Russia.
1982-1986.

The building is remarkable in many ways, say, first underground parking garage of Irkutsk can be found in this very building as well as the tallest archway.

My favourite part of the former Palast der Republik was the globe lamps in the foyer

Apparently they were saved and are being sold off to be reused. You can see some of them in this loft in NYC.

You can buy a fixture for almost 25,000 USD

Hahaha, he was asking to identify the building. According the second Cyrillic text, it looks like somewhere in the former Soviet republics (Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan etc., but definitively not Georgia or Armenia). I know, I wasn't very helpful.

It seems to be the Sports Palace in Togliatti (where they built Lada):

Yep... The dullest of all major cities of Russia. And on second thoughts better call it its proper historical name, Stavropol-on-Volga rather than that Soviet Italo commie atrocity of a toponym.

I'm not sure whether this is on topic, since I'm going to post neither a picture of a building, nor an unbuilt design; these are "renderings" by a(n east) german graphic designer, Dieter Urbach, from mid 60s to mid 70s; imho they're amazing — way way better than those flat and multi-coloured computer graphics renderings we get today. More info, samples and credits here.

East Berlin's new center, view towards the Fernsehturm (TV tower) from the site of the soon-to-be-constructed Palast der Republik (Palace of the Republic) and viceversa:
