In the next 30 months, Gurgaon will roll out its own Metro trains that would run through its residential areas.

The Haryana Government has decided to award the Rs 900-crore-contract of setting up the National Capital Region's first privately-operated metro train project to the consortium company of DLF and Infrastructure Leasing Financial Services (IL&FS).

A decision was taken in the Cabinet meeting headed by Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda in Chandigarh on Monday evening.

The project has been subjected to many changes to make it a people's train.

As against an earlier plan to take it through the IT hub DLF Cybercity, the train's route has now been realigned and will run through the residential pockets of DLF City as well a proposed special economic zone.

It would also touch upon Udyog Vihar, the industrial hub near Expressway, and benefit thousands of workers who commute to the place everyday.

The service will be called the Gurgaon Metro Rail Link (GMRL). The consortium company of IL&FS group and DLF were the sole bidders for this project.

A senior government official said it would be extended from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation's Gurgaon Metro line between Mehrauli and Sikanderpur stations.

“Earlier the company had plans to lay the Metro on special third rail tracks with rubber wheels that is prevalent in some European countries,” said the official.

The plan was changed keeping in mind the fact that all extensions of the DMRC's lines such as the IAI Express and the one between Mundka and Badarpur would be on standard gauge.

The train would be fitted with Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system that does not require a human driver to run it. The GMRL trains will have three coaches and a passenger carrying capacity of 300.

The rail network, which involves an investment of Rs 900 crore, would be complete in 30 months from the date of award of the project. A major portion of the 6.1km elevated stretch would have a single track providing one-way movement.

The network to be called Gurgaon Metro Rail Link (GMRL) will benefit an estimated 1 lakh commuters, particularly the daily workforce. According to the design, the rail line takes off and terminates at Sikanderpur covering both residential and commercial areas of DLF-II, DLF-III and Cyber City. The approximately 1.2km stretch between Sikanderpur Metro station and DLF-II would have double tracks, while the rest would have a single track. So, a train will start from Sikanderpur station and terminate at the same after covering the entire stretch. The trains would draw power from the third rail running underneath. The GMRL would be connected to the station through a 90m-long walkway.

Originally, Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) had floated a tender for a 3.2km-long Metro link between Sikanderpur and NH-8 worth Rs 500 crore. Though realty major DLF had envisaged the project in 2007 to provide connectivity to Cyber City, Haryana government had objected to the idea of a private player using public transport for profit making. DLF owns most part of Cyber City and a majority of the land on this stretch.

Now, according to the modified proposal, the 6.1km elevated corridor will have six stations Sikanderpur, DLF-II, Belvedere Tower, DLF-III, Gateway Tower touching NH-8 and Mall of India which government officials claim would serve the "real purpose of the new mode of public transport''.

All the platforms will have special screen doors and even dead-ends of the platforms would have glass screens. These doors will separate the platform from the track to prevent accidents and also permit higher arrival and departure speeds for trains. Besides, it would also increase the service frequency significantly.

The initial frequency of trains with three coaches would be three minutes and each coach would have a capacity of 300 passengers. While the average speed would be 30kmph, the maximum speed is 80kmph. The design of the train is yet to be decided, but sources said it would be a medium Metro. A standard fare of Rs 10 has been fixed for the entire stretch.

Haryana government sources said the consortium would pay Rs 765 crore to HUDA as connectivity charges over the next 35 years. It will also pay a certain percentage in the range of 5-10% of the revenue earnings from advertisement rights and property development to HUDA. The government is yet to hand over the letter of intent to the consortium.

They may integrate it with Delhi Metro but dont think it'll be connected to Delhi Metro.. Coz the technology is different.. Delhi Metro uses over head cables and this one uses third rail.

Good to see the project finally taking off. DLF wanted to start building it in 2007 but the babus in Chandigarh weren't in favor of the revenue sharing model and in general money being made by a private firm and not a govt body.

btw CBK Rao is the head of this network. He used to be #2 at Delhi metro until 2007.

DLF Ltd has announced a metro rail project for its townships in Gurgaon with a project cost of Rs 9bn, according to a report.

A consortium of India' DLF Ltd and IL&FS plans to raise Rs7bn to part fund the construction of a metro rail system in New Delhi suburbs.

The 'DLF MetroRail, Gurgaon' project has been bagged on concession by the consortium for a period of 99 years to build and operate the metro sytem, report stated.

The report stated that the mode of fund raising would be decided later. The 6.1 km metro link with standard gauge line would be completed within the next 30 months.

Foundation laid for DLF Metro

That the millennium city's public transport is in a mess is anybody's guess. But finally it came from Haryana chief minister Bhoopinder Singh Hooda on Tuesday. So, what made the CM admit the `nightmare', especially when elections are round the corner?

Perhaps, a sign that things are improving. Hooda on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of India's first privately-owned public transport network, the Gurgaon Metro Rail Project (GMRP), which seeks to serve as a feeder network to Delhi Metro's Central Secretariat-Gurgaon. "The DLF Metro and Delhi Metro will change the way the city travels,'' said Hooda.

GMRP executive director CBK Rao said that the 6.1km-long stretch will be integrated with DMRC's central secretariat-Gurgaon line at Sikandarpur. "The two stations will be connected through an elevated walkway 90metre-long and 9metre-wide. Passengers should be able to interchange between the lines without having to go on the road,'' said Rao, adding that the timing of the two networks will be synchronized so that passengers have enough time on their hands for switch-over. Rao added that that there will be common ticketing system for both the Metro systems. It's expected to benefit 1 lakh commuters everyday, especially the workforce in DLF cyber city.

The DLF Metro to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 900crore will include six stations Sikanderpur, DLF Phase-II, DLF Phase-III, DLF Cyber City, Mall of India and DLF Gateway Tower. At one point in Sikanderpur, the Metro track will go above the DLF line. "There will be gap of 4 meters at that point,'' Rao said.

Obviously the technology hasn't been announced yet, but it's not going to be a "real" metro, more like an LRT. The specs say 75m platforms and 3-car trains with a total capacity of 300, vs 300 pax in a single car of the Delhi Metro, so you're probably looking at something like Crystal Mover or Bombardier CX-100/Innovia:



Both of those take around 100 people per car, so 3 x 100 = 300 as required.

Both of those take around 100 people per car, so 3 x 100 = 300 as required.

According to above article, capacity of each coach is 300, so total capacity is 900. It won't be like a people mover.

100 people per coach is highly doubtful claim if it is like the pictures shown above. Coaches like the one above have people mostly standing and it is similar to a inter-terminal shuttle you find on large airports. The LRT on the right is used in Singapore as a feeder to two metro stations and thereafter not used elsewhere. Their experience is mixed itseems as it has been reported to break-down often. It's basically a bus with a gripper underneath to confine the bus to move along a rail at the centre. And it is slow and unmanned. Might as well put a bus on elevated feeder busway at closely spaced intervals.

Singapore's Bukit Panjang LRT (right pic above) was indeed a failure for the reasons you list, but the Japanese-built Sengkang, Punggol and Changi Airport LRTs have been quite reliable.

But this is all speculation and the media always muddles up its figures, let's see what the actual tenders say...
