So why did't they built a 3rd tier?
You know the documentary "Lost Wolrds, Hitler's Supercity" in History Channel?
Amazing documentary about all of Hitler's and Speer's super projects either made or not. You are talking about the :
"Deutsches Stadion",
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deutsches_Stadion,
a huge 400.000 arena for Nazi rallies.

Quote:
According to Speer himself, it was inspired not by the Circus Maximus in Rome but by the Panathenaic Stadium of Athens, which had impressed him greatly when he had visited it in 1935 (Speer, Erinnerungen, 75). Speer's stadium was a gigantic inflation of its Greco-Roman model, from which he borrowed the horseshoe configuration and the propylaeum, now transformed into a raised, pillared, temple-like structure (Säulenvorhof) attached to the open end of the stadium by an internally pillared courtyard
It was basically an enlarged Panthinaic Stadium, the same lenght but the tiers extented almost 3 times higher.

Never heard of that. Sure you don't mistake it for the Mayfield? It is located next to the stadium (behind the Marathon Gate) and was built as a parade ground for 250.000 people at Hitler's special request. During the Olympic Games, it was used for the polo competitions.

At its inauguration, the Olympiastadion had a capacity of 110.000 people.

The games were awarded to Berlin in 1931. The organization commitee planned to use an extended "Deutsches Stadion" for the games.

When Hitler came to power in 1933, he changed the plans for the 1936 games completely. He wanted to show the world the "arian supremacy". So he ordered to tear down the old "Deutsches Stadion". The construction of the Olympic Stadium, the "Reichssportfeld" with the May Field, Stadiums for the swimming & hockey competions
and training facilities started in May 1934. The constructions were just in time completed in June 1936.

What did the renovation do for the stadium? I mean, obviously it made it a far better facility and it allowed them to host the World Cup, which made it worth it alone, but it was already the stadium for Hertha. Did this renovation bring in any new events or allow them to keep events that were going to leave or anything like that? Besides it just being nicer and better, how is the stadium and its operations different now as opposed to before the renovation?

Let's go with the Athletics world championships.

Any Berliner may post some photo of the events?

ps. anyone knows what is KulturStadion? it's named on the official web-site of the event at http://www.berlin2009.org/299-1-programme.html

Every passing Wold Cup the ceremonies keep getting more pompous & elaborate, and the football itself gets poorer & poorer. I think of Mexico 1970, for instance. No hype, no ballyhoo & no extravagance, but the soccer was absolutely first-rate.

That's coincidence more than anything else. Euro 2008 was the best Euros in ages football wise, but probably had more "pomp" than earlier Euros. I don't quite see your point.

Anyway, this thread's about the stadium, not the games.

Thanks to Fenerbahce we can't use their stadium.
Would be perfect. One stadium on the european side (TTA) and one stadium in the asian side (SSS)
I dont think upgrade is bad... it is nice and better than olimpico of Roma! but SDF is the best of those 3... However the roof effects the view of architecture and aesthetic a we see at OAKA of Athens and Munic Olympic stadium.

I also think that uğpgraded Olympic tsadium of Istanbul looks better than Berlin Olympic wich as a horrible roof construction.
