Yes, things could really be so wonderfully simple, if only building a new stadium wouldn't cost so f...kin much money.

The reason why they failed to stay in the top league in the first place was because the attendance at this stadium was embarrasingly low for a big city as Berlin, especially compared to other German clubs (ALL of which are located in cities smaller than Berlin!!!) and the fans who did came and attended were useless as supporters because they were too far from the pitch.

It has now been firmly established EVERYWHERE in Germany (as well as beyond) that soccer-only stadiums are the way of the future! All clubs have replaced or are in the process of replacing their old track-field ringed stadiums and refitting them or building a whole new soccer only pitch. So Herta should IMMEDIATELY plan to build a football-only venue elsewhere in Berlin and they better be quick.

The fact is the Olympic stadium will NEVER be a soccer-friendly place week in week out for all Herta's regular season matches. Only the cup finals and such extraordinary matches will attract full capacity. So Herta-Berlin better get their acts in order and move to a soccer only venue, or else they WILL be relegated back to the second division AGAIN. Mark my words.
you have forgotten den Club, FC Nürnberg. it is also an athletic stadium what do you think is the reason why Hertha doesn`t yet
have a real football-stadium ? I will tell you: lack of money ! Hertha got no money and the same is with Berlin.

I'm going to make a controversial statements. This is the only future and LONG TERM stable solution for the Berlin Olympic stadium:

(1) Herta should get out

(2) Roof needs to me removed and and full sight/visibility-lines for all the seats restored.

(3) primary function of the stadium should be concerts and festival type of events. That (= entertainment) should be the main income support that should be generated by the expoiiters of this olympic stadium and NOT from hosting Bundesliga club matches. That belongs to go to a special soccer only stadium cuz Herta SUPPORTERS are DISADVANTAGED: they are sitting too far from the grass, from their players!

So Germans get your act together! Berliners come on! Auf gets! Stop the stupid fashion-festival and all that other stuff and first build a soccer only stadium in your CAPITAL city ASAP!

Your country already have that kind of facilities everywhere else, from north to south to east and west... so Berlin has no excuse!

It's a rather naive assumption that the Olympic Stadium had any viable future without football. Once Hertha BSC moves out which might happen soon enough this stadium will start to deteriorate. Without the pressure of a powerful tenant the city of Berlin won't keep up the necessary maintenance. Decay would be the only long term prospect in such a scenario.

Hertha Berlin has a contract to play in Olympiastadion until 2017. (4.5 million € /year)
In 2008 they made plans to build a football stadium on the abandoned Tempelhof airfield.

Perhaps modifications could be done in preparation for an Olympics?

I would expand the stadium to a minimum of 80,000, through new rows of seating built on the top tier (removal of the roof) or through rearranging of seating (I would keep the "open" part unseated).

Add a new roof covering a much larger area and be supported solely by a new concourse. Video screens and athletics scoreboards will suspend from 4 sides of the stadium's roof.

Expand the concourse (thus making it bigger, more potential for concessions and more entrances) and make it fully enclosed through glass coverings on the outside (it will also support any expansion to the upper tier).

Remove that darn clock both inside and on the Olympic column outside the stadium. Replace it with something more modern, perhaps a new clock on one side and stadium logo on the other (I'm aware it used to be the Nazi logo)?

Make the Olympic logo fully coloured or at least with neon colours so it can light up at night.

And naturally one expects a new Olympic cauldron, expected on top of the open stands.

Perhaps post Olympic legacy would indeed be concerts, festivals and the like, as well as the final Bundesliga matches, provided of course if it's upgraded to a significant capacity.

I read back that there can be no significant modifications due to the fact that this venue is of "preserved" status. Well I personally think the law should change to upgrade the Olympiastadion and make it something more modern that respects the existing look of the stadium (as well as enlarging it in the process).

If we (in Melbourne) had put the Melbourne Cricket Ground on the Victorian Heritage list years ago, then we wouldn't have been able to demolish the old Olympic, Ponsford and Members stands to make way for the Northern Stand or heck, if such a law was done years before, then we wouldn't have been able to demolish the stands that once occupied where the Great Southern Stand is.

Is the pool "preserved"? That might need to be removed, if one is to live out a proper expansion of the stadium.

You seem to forget that the Olympic Stadium is a listed building. You can't just add a few rows of seats somewhere and extend the stadium concourse. The reconstruction 10 years ago was already a compromise between preserving the architecture and the commercial needs of modern football. Hence the roof is supported by view-restricting pillars.

I also don't know what you mean by preparation for Olympics. Berlin is extremely unlikely to host Olympic Games ever again. Germany as a whole has barely a chance of Summer Games.

No I didn't, I mentioned that towards and said the law should be changed.

Barely a chance at the Summer Olympics again? I think not. 2020 would be a good year to capitalize on the symbolism of 30 years of reunification, heck their 2000 bid heavily relied on the fact that most venues were already in place save for a modern arena and velodrome.

What about the Colosseum in Rome? Shouldn't that be modernized and expanded first? - I mean, the Olympic stadium in Berlin is still in pretty good shape compared to that one, isn't it?

Oh and while we're at it ...what about the Pyramids in Giza? The Eiffel Tower? - Cologne Cathedral? - The Tadj Mahal? Aren't they all awfully outdated? - Oh and not to forget ...so awfully unsuitable for soccer, too.

It's not like the Olympiastadion in Berlin is a building that's centuries, or even thousands of years old.

It's a venue that in order to see proper viability in the future, should be upgraded, law or not.

It's a nice stadium and all, but I still see potential in expansion, whilst respecting the architectural design of the stadium.

The Coliseum in Rome is a historically preserved ruin, it doesn't see regular use as a sports venue, just merely a cultural one. Obviously you wouldn't upgrade it for those reasons.

Oh and while we're at it... you're being ridiculous with that attempt at sarcasm in the end remark, you obviously can't compare the likes of a sporting venue with a non sporting one.

Olympic Summer Games in Berlin - no chance before 2040!

I guess Munich will go for 2022 and if they get it, a summer games bid in Berlin had no chance for the following years. May be Berlin could bid for the 2040 games, the 50th anniversary of the reunification of Germany and the end of the cold war!

Of course the Olympic Stadium in Berlin is not thousands of years old and one might surely argue about it's historic value. And some people here and there will surely agree with you, but the fact is, it has been put under protection to be preserved as a historic monument, just like other more famous and older examples, as the Colosseum in Rome and many others.
The Olympic Stadium in Berlin is architecturally as well as historically of a certain national and international importance. The fact that this Monument has found a present use as homestadium for Hertha BSC, hosts Worldcup finals and national cup finals is a lucky coincidence. If it wasn't being used for such events, it would just be a more or less known and visited museum.
But luckily it is being used currently and freuently so that it's a "living" monument with continueing and evolving history.

You might not see it's importance or you might not value it as important as others or you might just want to do a bit of reading and getting yourself aquainted with it's historiy and architectural value. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympiastadion_Berlin <- that link is probably a fairly good start to find some more information.)

Wether you agree or not, fact is:
The law here on preservation of srchitectural monuments is pretty good just as it is, and doesn't really need modification and the stadium is also pretty good and doesn't need modification either and it deserves to be preserved and protected in a reasonable way.

And besides all that, it's still one of Germanies/ Europes largest stadia and Hertha BSC certainly doesn't need any bigger stadium in the nearer future (and they certainly couldn't afford to pay for one in the nearer future either - they can't even afford to finance an own smaller soccer specific stadium) just as the yearly national cupfinals don't necessarily need a much larger capacity and European and worldcup finals don't really either, especially when considering, that the next World Cup final being held in Berlin after the current womens world cup final (if there will ever be one in Berlin again) will most likely still be quite some time away in the future. 2006 and 2011 are just a bit recent or current for Worldcup Finals to worry about.

So even when leaving the preservation issue aside, there's simply no realistic or urgent need for expansion or modernisation, wether some stadium fans on the internet desire one or not.

The law was made to prevent exactly what you proposed, bringing an architectural showpiece into subjection of commercial needs. Changing this law means abolishment in this case. There is no way that this will ever happen.

Berlin lacks the support of the broad German public. Contrary to other capital cities Berlin is a drain rather than a spring of wealth. Which means that it needs the support more, but is even less likely to get it.

No, just the main stadium and all related facilities have been refurbished. The swimming centre has been left out and is in appalling state apparently.
