acc521 In Copenhagen: 6 - 8 May 2009

Copenhagen was probably the biggest disapointment of this trip because I had such high hopes for it. The city is structured well, with lots of cycle paths, parkland, open spaces etc so I can see why it gets praise from an urban planning point of view. The kicker for me was the prices - Copenhagen made Paris look dirt cheap, the prices for everything were beyond the realms of reality and most of the stores don't accept international credit cards!

Like I said, perhaps it's just me as this city does constantly get voted as one of the most liveable in the world. I will have to give it another chance someday, perhaps as a holiday with money rather than as a budget traveller.

Very nice photos from Copenhagen as well; The photo below (one of yours) is Copenhagen in distance?

No that's actually whatever town is at the Southern tip of Denmark. I went by train from Berlin to Copenhagen, and to get from Germany to Denmark, you get on a ferry. I didn't even know so it was unexpected when we were told to get off the train (which had gone into the bottom of the ferry) and go on to the upper deck!

By the way Christos, I might be coming to Greece in September! Thinking of doing Athens and Thessaloniki. Might also try and get out to where my grandparents are from, which is Neret (Polipotamos?)

Nice shots.

Visiting smaller cities with less street life such as Copenhagen I feel the weather can decide how you like it. It looks pretty cold on the pictures. When I visited it was pretty cold and deserted. I didn't really get the city.

Amazing trip you are making!

Very charming, clean and pedestrian friendly city. I bet those who live there love Copenhagen.

Beautiful city. I always heard it was expensive. Can you give an example of the price of something there?

The Big Mac index (http://www.economist.com/markets/ind...ry_id=13055650) is always a good measure of prices as it's something that everyone knows

In the most recent one, a Big Mac costs (In US$):
$3.54 in the US, $3.30 in the UK, $2.19 in Australia, and $5.07 in Denmark. A lot of things were like this. For example a typical new release PS3 game that costs around AUD$90 in Australia or AUD$80 in the UK was around AUD$130 in Copenhagen.

It was the only city were I really struggled to eat anything decent and I ended up having to go over budget. I was staying in 2-3 star hotels throughout Europe and although the one in Copenhagen was one of the worst I stayed in, it was also one of the most expensive. I was (and still am) genuinely shocked at how expensive the city is. When I went to Stockholm straight after, the exact same products at the supermarket for example were around 20-30% cheaper.

Nice pictures - looks a bit cold though.

The reason for the cheaper products in Sweden at the moment is because of the weak Swedish currency. The prices in Denmark and Sweden used to be about the same. Development in the exchange rate.
