The old town is not over the waterfront, it's only 300 metres far, but the waterfront only have "modern" uninteresting apartment buildings, not as ugly as the average buildings in the region, but uninteresting anyway

Beautiful! I'm surprised the city looks small scale, are there larger blocks and roads as well?

I didn't go to the waterfront of Marbella. Only because of what Victhor has pointed out - it's a largely uninteresting part of town compared to the quaint old town. Puerto Banus is much more pleasant and quite attractive despite its modern nature.

This is of course the old town which in most Spanish cities, is small scale in relation to the spread and otherwise size of the city. Marbella does have its fair share of tower blocks and wide avenues though. I just found them rather plain, boring and in places, ugly.
