CRZ

Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Rameshsaid that when it came to managing coastal areas, the welfare of fishermen and their families would be given priority over the construction of luxury hotels and other commercial development activity along beach areas. Commercial structures that are detrimental to the coastal environment would be demolished and the livelihood and security of fishermen protected.

Will the Elevated Highway fall under the category "commercial structure"...will the minister also look at providing better standard of living to the fishermen instead of allowing them to rot in the slums?

I was watching this video on Nat Geo channel regarding megastructures in Dubai. It was about these palm islands that were created in the sea for residential and commercial purposes. There are much more bigger projects being implemented now on the sea after its huge success. The channel says that the aquaitc flora and fauna ecosystem has actually become even better with the arrival of new fish in that region due to the new sand deposits to create artificial land. Now they are thinking of creating artificial coral reefs to strenghten it more.

When all these can happen successfully in one part of the World, why do only we keep talking about fishermen and fragile ecosystems. I am sure there are ways to develop them with the technology available these days. I hope our politicians watch these kind of TV programs too

We have discussed the CRZ issue and the fragile eco system many times over in this thread. Since new members are joining and contributing, the same issues are raised again and again.

My advice to the new forumers is " PLEASE GO THROUGH THE PREVIOUS POSTS & THEN POST YOUR REACTIONS"

Please note that Mr. Jairam Ramesh is an excellent intelligent person and we should be happy that such a person has been selected as a minister instead of someone who can not even understand the enviro issues and LOL take action on the same.

I am not personally advising anybody but as a general suggestion.

Please dont give knee jerk reactions to all these developmental issues just because we have a forum to write. Kindly google (or Bing) do some reading, understand the various views and comments before posting. Let the criticisms be constructive.

We have to wait and watch how Jairam ramesh excels in this post.. Lets see if he persists in not giving approval to Navi Mumbai airport for which the verdict will be out very soon. Its too early to judge his mettle now

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) will provide more fun and thrilling experience to sports enthusiasts both on water and land regularly.

It will introduce two new water scooters in the TTDC Boat House in Muttukadu on Monday.

What is the reason private entrepreneurs are not willing to take the initiative and invest in such facilities? Most of the tourism related infrastructure is provided by the government and private investment is lacking.

Yup! Private investments could indeed boost the things up in the region. Already, there are quite a few private players in this corridor (such as MGM and VGP theme parks and the upcoming underwater aquarium).

I heard that TTDC has established 'Aqua mania' (Adventure park) near Mudaliarkuppam. Establishing yet another park near Mahabs is not making economic sense to me.

Reading the statements in the news over the last several months, it seems to me as if Irai Anbu, the tourism secretary, is like a politician, announcing all sorts of projects and initiatives all the time! I wonder if anyone else felt the same.

I feel that the govt should provide guidelines and then let the private sector take on the actual project. It should then act as an overall regulator and co-ordinator through TTDC, etc. This is the only way to bring about true high quality professionals into the entertainment industry.

Water scooter ride launched at Muttukadu Boat House

Encouraging response from visitors to the TTDC initiative on the first day

EXHILARATING: Visitors enjoy a ride in the newly launched water scooters at Muttukadu Boat House on Monday.

CHENNAI: For those who enjoy every moment of adrenaline rush, the water scooter ride at Muttukadu Boat House might be just the place they want to be in.

Two water scooters take off at a dizzying speed, plunge into the lake and make frequent sharp turns as the tourists on board thump their fists in the air to signal their enthusiasm.

The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation launched two water scooters on Monday and the first day saw an encouraging patronage from visitors.

Flagging off the ride, TTDC Managing Director A.C. Mohandoss said water scooters had been introduced with a view to boosting tourism on East Coast Road.

TTDC has been introducing many water sports in and around Chennai and promoting adventure tourism in the State.

A para-gliding facility will be introduced in Yelagiri this month. Similar to the adventure gallery on Island Grounds, gallery housing games such as ‘uriyadi,’ ‘rock climbing,’ and ‘bow and arrow’ will be introduced at Mahabalipuram.

“All hill stations, beaches and lakes will be promoted as adventure tourism hotspots. The para-sailing facility at Mudaliarkuppam has been suspended for sometime owing to strong winds and will be resumed shortly,” he said.

Following the good response for the recently launched bamboo boat house at Muttukadu Boat House, TTDC will introduce 32-seater boat houses in popular water bodies, he said.

A water scooter ride is charged Rs. 400 for a 5-minute ride and a person can take a ride at an average speed of 120 km.

The tourist will be accompanied by trained personnel who will ride the scooter.

Mr. Mohandoss also inaugurated ‘Surf,’ a multi-cuisine restaurant, and a unit of Coral, at the Boat House.

Tourism Projects are recognised as normal commercial projects in TN and all taxes, duties, Electricity charges at commercial rates are applicable. But most of the leading states in India have recognised Tourism as an industry and give lots of concessions.

Most of the projects become unviable and so Private players are shunning away.

Adventure tourism complex at Mamallapuram

http://www.expressbuzz.com/edition/s...20Coast%20Road

East Coast Road (ECR) may soon turn into ACR (Adventure Coast Road) with the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation planning to set up an adventure tourism complex at Mamallapuram.
The Corporation has already introduced adventure sports like parasailing, water scooter and wave runner in two of its boat houses at Muttukadu and Mudaliarkuppam situated along the ECR, in the last few years.
Briefing newsmen after flagging off two water scooters and waver runner at the Muttukadu Boat House on Monday, Dr A Chittaranjan Mohandoss, Director of Tourism and Managing Director of TTDC, said the proposal at Mamallapuram is part and parcel of making Tamil Nadu - a destination for adventure tourism in India.
He said, “The facility has been planned at TTDC’s Beach Resort Complex in the coastal town, which would get shape in two months from now. It would be offering several adventure sports alike other spots, where the sport is presently available.”
He said, adventure sports are gaining momentum in the State. “After we introduced water scooters, it had made 603 trips in 40 days, generating a revenue of Rs 2.75 lakh. Besides, about 10 boat houses run by TTDC located in various parts of Tamil Nadu have earned revenue to the tune of Rs 7 crore in the last fiscal year,” he noted. The two water scooters introduced at Muttukadu have been purchased at a cost of Rs 13.50 lakh.
Earlier, Chittaranjan Mohandoss also opened a multi cuisine restaurant at Muttukadu Boat House, created under Private Public Partnership model. This is the first such eatery set up by private entrepreneurs in a TTDC boat house. The restaurant caters varieties of Indian, Chinese and Continental dishes.

I want something akin to the Darling Harbour in Sydney to come up in ECR - which will have to be by a water body, an world class acquarium (VGP's proposed acquarium) and I wish Metro also is extended to that area - or atleast some other mode such as a monorail for that stretch connecting all the enternainment/tourist spots.

I hope the entire ECR from Uthandi to some formidable landmark such as Mahabs is made to be under Chennai City under the new expansion schemes .. The situations, zone abuses, and the confusions really beg for such an unification. Esp. if this it to be an Entertainment Corridor or sorts, its utter non-sense to leave the townplanning under Chengelpett (Kanchipuram) dtcp...
