Software Park, Phuket Project

http://softwareparkphuket.com/

Phuket, the largest island of Thailand coast, situated in the Andaman Ocean, is well known as preferred destination for tourists all over the world. In 2007, 5.5 million tourists visited via its International airport. Not only beautiful and pristine beaches, crystal clear sea water, daily eco-tourism activities, authentic Thai foods including shopping paradise with bargain prices, Phuket also provides world class infrastructures such as 3 to 6 stars hotels of more than 35,000 rooms, international airport, 2 international hospitals well accepted by international insurance companies, international schools/Bi-lingual schools and universities. Telecommunication with hi-speed internet is also readily available.

At the same time, Phuket has been promoted as ICT City since 2000. All ICT related infrastructures were developed to serve and improve quality of life for local people and meet the expectation of international travelers. In the past 2 years, more than 8,000 ADSL ports were implemented, as well as CDMA with 2.5 G bases and 2 redundant fibber optic loops all around Phuket together with last-mile copper wire to offer Metrolan with reliable and high speed connection for business and home use.

In 2005, Software Industry Promoting Agency (SIPA) set up a local branch in Phuket to facilitate and promote start up and investment of software Development Company in Phuket. More than 1 million EURO is spent each year for various activities and coordination with Board of Investment (BOI) to offer tax incentives together with related benefits. Also the Royal Thai Immigration Department has granted ICT knowledge workers working in Phuket special employment visa and privileges. Aiming to encourage ICT related business activities on the island while taking advantage of good weather and beautiful environment of the work place. Recently,SIPA’s Director has announced plan to promote Phuket as the center of ICT research and development. It plans to bring in giant ICT companies such as Sun, IBM, etc. to set up offices/R&D Center in Phuket within 2008.

Anuphas and Sons Co. Ltd., holding company of a diversified group of companies has currently developed a multi-purposes real estate project. It is called “Chao Fah City” which is around 40 minutes from airport and 30 minutes away from Phuket’s most famous beach, Patong Beach. The “Chao Fah City” project has the land area of 700 acres situated in a valley with many lagoons. It will be the largest project with well planned environment to attract new businesses and high quality residential projects. An International Convention Center, International Learning Institutions, Hotels as well as premium residential homes/apartments targeted mainly at long termed stay are among its plan.

Blue Lagoon (Phuket) Co. Ltd. is established as a spin off company to especially create ICT ideal work place. Its first phase, to be completed within 2008, will be specifically developed as ICT offices with all essential infra-structure. Closed coordination with Telephone Organization of Thailand (TOT) and Communication Authority of Thailand (CAT), its buildings will be completed with high speed broadband internet and communication both wire and wireless such as ADSL, Leased Line, CDMA and Wi-Max based.

By mid 2008, our first 2 buildings will be ready to offer 1,000 sqm. office facilities and the third building, 8,000 sqm, will be available in the following year.

Designed with environmental concern, every effort is made to ensure that Blue Lagoon Buildings meet green standard and environmentally friendly. Wind and Solar cell power will be used as alternative sources of energy. More than 50% of land will be preserved as green zone together with garden and recreational area. Moreover, 1000 m. of jogging track along the curve of lagoon will help release all-day-long stress in front of computer. Convenience store, medical service and food shop will be ready to serve with just few steps away from a workstation.

Green and bright blue color of mountain range in the back ground together with the lagoon as well as clear blue sky will certainly create innovation and productivity to your staff and finally the company business objectives.

Currently, 3 software companies; Phuket Software Factory Co. Ltd., Open Source Technology Co. Ltd., International Medical Software Co. Ltd., are contracted tenants of Blue Lagoon Building.

Overview

Due to the government’s vision in turning Phuket into an international city, the island has steadily developed itself in the past few years. One aspect of Phuket’s growth is it’s information technology infrastructure, which has been greatly sponsored by government agencies like NECTEC and SIPA. Ambitious projects such as the “Phuket Digital Paradise” project, the “Phuket ICT City” project and the “National Flagship: Phuket ICT Innovation Paradise” project help increase the city’s potential in being one of the main IT hubs in this region. The island once depended solely on tourism, but now completely new business areas like information technology and software development have started to emerge. Software Park Phuket’s main goal is to extend those business opportunities to small and medium sized enterprises. Our confidence in turning Phuket into a Software Development center is from two main reasons; a rock solid infrastructure and these advantages Phuket has over other areas

Phuket has been promoted as ICT City since 2000. All ICT related infrastructures were developed to serve and improve quality of life for local people and meet the expectation of international travelers. In the past 2 years, more than 8,000 ADSL ports were implemented, as well as CDMA with 2.5 G bases and 2 redundant fiber optic loops all around Phuket together with last-mile copper wire to offer Metrolan with reliable and high speed connection for business and home use.

Phuket has an international airport capable of supporting more than 120 flights per day, 5 million travelers per year (2007 statistics).

Phuket has 2 internationally renown hospitals; Bangkok-Phuket Hospital and Phuket International Hospital as well as another 200 bed-sized state hospital which are capable of treating both locals and tourists.

Phuket has 2 International schools providing International Baccalaureate (IB) courses and another 3 Bi-Tri Lingual Schools that cover most important languages. It also has two universities that produce ICT graduates which are the following

1. Prince of Songkla University, Phuket campus. This institute can create 300 well capable Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Information Technologies and Electronic Business graduates.

2.Phuket Rajabhat University This facility can produce 250 Computer Science, Information Technologies, Business Computing, and Computer Education graduates each year.

Both Universities have strong internship programs which provide students with real world experience in working and creates many job opportunities straight out of graduating.

Social and lifestyle readiness

As of now, Phuket’s tourism and service industry creates well over 8 billion Baht of annual income. It is the main source of the islands earnings. However in the future, it will be difficult to enter and compete in these industries due to the fact that land is getting pricier and harder to find by the day. Students who graduate from tourism industry courses will have to move to other cities to find work, leaving the island with none of the workforce needed to pioneer the island to wealth and prosperity. From the reason mentioned, it is clear that Phuket can no longer depend on its tourism business alone. This is where the software industry comes in.

The software development and information technologies industry is a highly flexible enterprise with no boundaries. Transportation and logistic fees can be cut out thanks to the internet. Furthermore, it is also environment friendly and does not affect tourism. Besides from creating jobs for locals, the software industry will also attract ICT knowledge workers from all around the world to Phuket. Although Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong currently dominate the industry in this region, with enough resources and support Phuket may one day be able to compete with them.

Software Park Phuket was founded in late 2008 with support from Software Park Thailand, the Southern Science Park and Blue Lagoon Phuket Co. It was created for 3 main purposes

1. To provide a service area for ICT entrepreneurs with support from CAT Telecom in providing a fiber optic based high speed internet connection. Software Park Phuket currently has 8 local and international companies occupying and intends to increase that number to 15 by 2010.

2. To facilitate young and upcoming software developers through our Business Incubator Center. New companies will receive guidance and support as well as various business opportunities from our partner network. We currently have 4 incubates participating in the program and expect to reach over 8 by 2010. แก้ในตัวเลข 4, 8 ในภาษาไทยด้วยค่ะ

3. To conduct studies and research in the field of ICT and software development through our Research and Development Lab. Potential innovations and selected technologies are preparing to be applied to business structures in the future. With support from leading ICT researchers and organizations, this Lab will be a strong force in the upcoming years.

During October 8-10, 2009, Software Park Phuket will team up with Software Park Thailand in hosting The Asia Oceania Regional Software Park Forum 2009 with support under The Asia Oceania Regional Software Park Alliance. Organizing this event will strengthen Phuket’s image and prove the island’s capabilities in being a true ICT City.

By 2010, Software Park Phuket will extend to its full capacity of 51 Rai, providing an area of over 10,000 Sq M for occupants. Designed with environmental concern, every effort is made to ensure that our facilities meet green standards and are environmentally friendly. Wind and Solar power will be used as alternative sources of energy. More than 50% of land will be preserved as green zones together with gardens and recreational areas. Convenience stores, medical service and restaurants will be ready to serve within just few steps from your office.

The Software Park Phuket (SPP) aims to promote and strengthen software-related businesses in the Phuket area. The SPP seeks to attract businesses, start-up companies, and entrepreneurs as well as to gather Information and Communication Technology or ICT knowledge workers from various companies around the world into the Phuket area. People from Nordic and Scandinavian regions represent one of the SPP’s targeted groups. In general, Phuket is known as the world-class tourist destination and has sufficient infrastructure necessities such as international schools (nowadays using International Baccalaureate or IB curriculum), Prince Songkla University (with well-known computer engineering programs), high-speed internet, and outstanding airports and seaports.

Software Park Phuket opens

Software Park Phuket is located on Chao Fa West Rd northbound, about a mile north of Kajonkietsuksa School.

WICHIT, PHUKET: Software Park Phuket is to officially kick off services from its first phase of development with an opening ceremony tomorrow.

Director Kongkiat Kespechara said the soft opening is intended to demonstrate the readiness of the park’s facilities and its business-incubation center.

The first phase of development has cost about 25 million baht. The park has 1,250 square meters of floor space in a three-story building and has seven tenants, four Phuket-based software firms and three foreign entrepreneurs.

“The rental space is already fully occupied and we have five or six companies on our waiting list to rent space,” Mr Kongkiat said. “We are offering around 50 to 100 square meters to each tenant.”

The park’s business-incubation center, run by former Software Industry Promotion Agency (Sipa) Phuket Office chief Dr Rattana Wetprasit, offers facilities and services including business consultancy, marketing services and business matching for new enterprises.

Five “incubatees” have already moved into the center and the park expects to double this number by the end of this year. The number is expected to rise to 30 next year.

Software Park Phuket plans eventually to occupy 10 rai (1.6 hectares) of land with three main buildings: one housing rental space, the incubation center and a research and development center.

The park is owned and operated by a private firm called Blue Lagoon (Thailand), a subsidiary of Phuket property firm Anuphas Group of Phuket Senator Phummisak Hongyok, who has extensive undeveloped landholdings in Wichit.

Phase one development work began last year.

Software Park Phuket aims to help local industry to expand beyond reliance on tourism and hospitality and into software. The revenue-generating capability of industry in Phuket has to grow beyond the unsustainable tourism and hospitality industries that are seriously affected by the current economic downturn, Mr Kongkiat said.

The park’s second phase of development is about to begin. It will cost a further Bt1.2 billion, funded from a bank loan, an increase in the park’s registered capital and a joint-venture investment.

The second phase will involve the construction of a new five-story building providing 2,500 square meters of rental space, a 43-unit serviced-apartment block and a 400-seat meeting hall.

Some of these services are expected to be available by April next year, including the meeting hall and the rental space,” Mr Kongkiat said.

In October this year Software Park Phuket will be joined by Software Park Thailand in hosting the Regional Software Park Forum 2009. About 400 guests from the Asia-Pacific and Oceania region are expected to attend.

Already set up on the ground floor is Phuket Investor, a financial services company run by currency trader Ed Golding.
