Luxury hotel opens doors in Upper Hill


March 3, 2010 - The Crowne Plaza hotel has finally begun operations in Kenya after several months of delay. The Maple Star Hotels Group will run the hotel in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area. The Crowne Plaza becomes the second five star hotel under the IHG stable after the Intercontinental Hotel, and forms part of the group’s expansion plan in the region.

Speaking during the opening on Tuesday, Maple Star Hotels Managing Director Mike Jameson said the new five-star establishment was looking to tap into the growing business traveller market. “We see the major part of our business being occupancy driven given the number of people who are coming into town on business,” Jameson said.

The 162-room business hotel will rely on increased business activity in the area given the number of international companies and embassies in the Upper Hill region. Jameson exuded confidence the hotel would be able to achieve 70 percent operating capacity given Nairobi’s emergence as the regions hub for leisure, conference and business tourism.

“We are not here to fight with anyone, we know that there will be a natural move of specific markets to us because of our location and because of the standards of operation we are going to deliver,” he said. The entry of the Crowne Plaza is timely given the resurgence of the tourism industry, which had taken a major dip following twin effects of the post election violence and the global economic crisis.

Data from the Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) shows that international tourist arrivals for 2009 stood at 952,841 up from 2008 levels of 729,000. This rise in arrivals also saw tourism earnings go up 18 percent to Sh62.4 billion up from Sh52 billion realised in 2008.

2007 remains Kenya’s tourism benchmark year accounting for Sh65.4 billion, with one million tourists gracing its shores. The data also shows most tourists entry point is Nairobi, something Jameson is eager to capitalise on.

Also speaking during the opening, Maple Star Hotels Chairman Nazir Akbarali revealed they were weighing their options on setting up a second hotel in the country. “We are planning to put up a three-star hotel in Nairobi given the demand of such products in the market,” he said adding they were looking for an ideal location to set up the hotel. While the company primarily focuses on city hotels, Akbarali said there was potential in setting up a lodge in one of the country’s game parks.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to go to Upperhill when I was last in Nairobi. Though I would assume its roughly the same height as the Delta corner project in Westlands at 15-18 floors.

Kenya Embassy in Dar-Tanzania


NSSF to build Tanzanian embassy in Nairobi


The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) yesterday signed an agreement with K&M Archplans Limited to provide detailed designs for the construction of a planned Chancery at Tanzania ís High Commission in Nairobi. The signing was done at the Fundís headquarters in Dar es Salaam by NSSFís Director General Dr Ramadhani Dau and Mr James Kimathi of K&M Archplans Ltd.

Under the new agreement the designers are charged with providing structural details for the planned building before commencement of the tendering process. K&M Archplans Limited has offices in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam The agreement is part of the governmentís long-term effort to minimize administrative costs by constructing and owning buildings housing the country's foreign missions. Already the government owns 17 such premises out of her 32 foreign missions worldwide.

The initial agreement that resulted in the current agreement was signed on February 28, 2008 by Dr Dau and former acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ambassador Abubakar Ibrahim.

The project is estimated to cost 23.4 million US dollars. However, the actual construction cost will be known after receipt of construction bids and detailed design data.(65, 105, 225)"]The government, whose equity in the new project includes the ownership of Plot No. 209/3678 in the up market Upper Hill area of Nairobi , will control 20 per cent of the projectís share capital while the Fund will control the remaining 80 per cent.

The new 26 storey chancery will be built close to the British High Commission and the Embassy of Japan. The construction is scheduled to kick off in September and is expected to be completed by March 2012 before formal handing over in October 2012.

no problem. as long as there is progress thats all we can ask for.

upperhill is destined to be quite a business centre. with the rahmutullah tower, delta tower and the upcoming tanzanian 26 storey tower there will be a nice looking skyline
