Spotted another sign with apparent route shields:

Road to Alexandria by netranusa, on Flickr

I wonder if they have changed the road numbering system from the one indicated on OSM and here (even if no one really pays attention to the numbers anyway).

Because there is an oasis there with that name - no idea why it's called that although usually it's transcribed Baris. Probably coincidence.

Another sign with a different style of road numbers

It says R3 (ط3) with blue on yellow rectangle. The road is Cairo-Suez.

Nobody knows any road numbering in Egypt; the road is called where it goes to and through where, even in official reports
While I'm here, I may as well post that photo off the 'guess the highway' thread.
Cairo - Asyut ; the second outside of Cairo (as far as I'm aware) to be built to 'Freeway' standard.

I visited Cairo briefly a couple of weeks ago, and apparently the first ever set of rules governing road design & markings were implemented just last year. I could see the difference in Cairo; all roads marked now, more signage (but still not enough), lots of construction work (again still not enough).

That was just a guess by some random guy. But yes, it basically never snows in Egypt.

The correct form for posting a Youtube video is:
[youtube*]code[/youtube*] (without asterisks, of course)

Since this thread is up here anyway, there is a video from 6 months ago of several freeways (at least they're meant to be - but they clearly have no issues with stopping cars in the slow lane) newly opened east of Cairo

(see, I learned!)
